******* With magazines’ green issues reaching the saturation point, Rodale’s Women’s Health is betting blue is the next big thing in environmental awareness. Dubbed its “blue issue,” the November Women’s Health will delve into the role of water in areas like travel, sports, bathing and health. For the issue, Women’s Health partnered with third-generation environmentalists Alexandra and Philippe Cousteau, who are the grandchildren of Jacques Cousteau. They will guest-edit and work with the magazine on an adventure travel piece, said Tina Johnson, vp, editor in chief. “Water is something that touches everybody’s lives,” she said. “[The Cousteaus’] platform is really about, as is ours, making a difference by making choices every day that impact a healthy planet.” The Web site will complement the print with water-related video, sweepstakes and expert advice. Because the water package touches on many topics, such as beauty, health and the environment, the magazine expects a broad range of advertisers to support the blue issue, said Mary Murcko, vp, publisher. “This whole magazine is about living the healthy lifestyle, and so much [the reader] does is outside. And obviously, water has a big impact on that.” In addition to targeting already strong ad categories of beauty, health and beverage, she’ll try to boost participation from auto and fashion marketers not already in the book. Ever Since Kent Brownridge surfaced as a bidder for Dennis Publishing castoffs Maxim, Blender and Stuff, industry watchers have been atwitter about the possibility of a showdown between him and his old boss, Jann Wenner. Brownridge toiled for Wenner for 31 years, before “retiring” in the fall of 2005 (he said the decision to leave was his, but it’s widely believed that he was bounced out after relations between he and Wenner soured). And those who have seen his fierce competitiveness in action expect him to jump at the chance to use it against his former employer. “I think he would love to stick it in Jann’s face, especially over what happened to him at the end,” quipped one ex-employee. Brownridge, who served for years as Wenner’s consigliere and senior vp, general manager, would certainly have the knowhow to do so. “Kent makes Karl Rove look like a Sunday School teacher,” said a former Wenner exec. (In a sense, that is not much of a stretch: Brownridge was once a political operative for George McGovern.) MORE ONLINE

The Advocate, the national gay magazine, is kicking off the covers. That is, the magazine is starting to do away with the extra cover that is placed on the magazine before it is sealed in a plastic wrapper, concealing its identity during shipment. Its July 3 issue, which features on its cover a gay Marine who is a war veteran, was mailed to most subscribers with a standard address label in the lower left-hand corner, looking like any other magazine delivered by the Postal Service. Michael Phelps, the publisher of The Advocate, said the new policy of openness came about after the magazine polled its readers in April, asking them if they wanted to continue to receive the magazine in the wrapper or not. Top editors at In Style are embarrassed the fashion magazine's former accessories editor, Alice Kim, has reportedly been selling off swag to fund a boutique she's opening in Omaha, Neb. Kim, who announced she was leaving the magazine last month, violated a Time Inc. policy by selling handbags and other accessories to fellow reporters and editors, according to Web site Jezebel.com. Insiders said Kim moved to Omaha because, "her spiritual adviser told her that her future husband was there." Jezebel hints that man might be director Alexander Payne, who directed his wife, Sandra Oh, in "Sideways" before they divorced. "Kim was pursuing him for a while and told some people on staff they were dating," said a source. "Kim sold one Armani bag to a big-time editor for $400." Another source told Page Six, "It's commonplace for accessories to go missing from the fashion closet at In Style, and weeks later for them to turn up on eBay." Reps for In Style refused to comment, saying only that Kim had left her job there. Kim could not be reached for comment. MORE ONLINE

Ellen J. Pollock, a longtime top editor and writer for The Wall Street Journal, will leave after 18 years to become executive editor of BusinessWeek, the magazine will announce today. For five years, Ms. Pollock has worked on The Journal’s front page, most recently as deputy Page 1 editor, often handling the distinctive long-form articles that are a signature of The Journal. In that time, she has worked on two Pulitzer Prize-winning series — one in 2003 on corporate scandals and another in 2005 on people living with cancer. Ms. Pollock, 52, started at The Journal in 1989 as an editor for legal affairs, and then spent years as a senior writer covering, among other things, the Whitewater real estate scandal.
