******* Conde Nast Publications said Monday it is closing Jane magazine and its accompanying Web site. The magazine, which debuted in September 1997, will end with its August issue. It had a total average paid circulation of 706,561, according to data provided on the company's Web site in September 2006. "We worked diligently to make Jane a success. However, we have come to believe that the magazine and website will not fulfill our long-term business expectations," Conde Nast President and Chief Executive Charles Townsend said in a statement. Sad, if true, rumor: We're hearing that Jane magazine, which provided us so much joy with its coverage of boobs, has apparently folded. A call to Editor in Chief Brandon Holley resulted in our being informed that she was "in a meeting." Wonder what that might be about. UPDATE: The ad people just got back from a short meeting at which they were told the news. And as for the shuttering of the mag, Radar hears the same. UPDATE update: A friend hears from an employee: "It's done, everyone is packing up and has to be out today." MORE ONLINE

Jane magazine is closing down, if our inbox stuffers are to be believed. We’re told EIC Brandon Holley was among those who “only just found out” that Conde Nast was shutting things down. At least we’ll always have Glamour’s dating advice column. Update: We’re told there’s “some talk” about continuing the magazine as an online operation, but we all know how that sort of thing goes. Update 2: “Or not,” says a Jane insider, about things continuing online. MORE ONLINE

While it's never a great time to be told "We're shutting down your magazine and laying everybody off," Cond? Nast's timing in folding Jane was particularly inopportune. For one thing, editor in chief Brandon Holley was set to depart later today for Uganda in the company of actress Natalie Portman. The combination cover shoot/consciousness-raising mission has, obviously, been scrapped. The shutdown also puts a fat question mark over The Fashionista Diaries, the new reality show being filmed this summer for SoapNet (trailer above). The series follows fashion industry interns, two of whom were working at Jane. Shooting had been scheduled to continue through the summer, culminating at New York Fashion Week. An employee of the production company, Go Go Luckey Productions, hadn't heard about the closure. MORE ONLINE
