Cond? Nast to Close Jane, Ending Effort at Revival
By RICHARD P?REZ-PE?A
July 10, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/10/business/media/10mag.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Jane magazine will close this month after a nearly 10-year run, despite a turnaround effort that had shown signs of progress, Cond? Nast Publications announced yesterday.

In the crowded field of women’s magazines, Jane stood apart in aiming for a very specific demographic: single women in their 20’s. It appealed to readers using an irreverent, conversational tone and an often low-maintenance approach (“the lazy guide to great skin”).

But Jane also lagged far behind its main competitors in advertising sales. Cond? Nast declined to say whether the magazine, which will not publish after the August issue, was making a profit.

Bauer’s Cocktail Folds Before Launch
July 9, 2007
http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2007/07/bauers-cocktail-folds-before-launch.php#more

Hot on the heels of Jane's closure today comes news that Bauer Publications has opted to cancel the launch of Cocktail Weekly, the low-priced lifestyle magazine for women in their 20s. More than a dozen staffers, some reporting to work for the first time today, were told they wouldn't be needed in an impromptu meeting held about an hour ago. Bauer cited "uncertain conditions in the single copy marketplace." An insider tells Radar Bauer couldn't find distributors for the femmed-up hybrid of Us Weekly and Glamour. Bauer One-Ups Conde Nast

Bauer Publications has developed a strategy to avoid the embarrassment and severance packages that can come from shutting down a magazine: never launch the thing in the first place.

That's right -- just a few hours after Conde Nast Publications put a fork in Jane, Bauer raised the bar by calling off plans for Cocktail Weekly, a lifestyle and celebrity book that had been scheduled to appear on newsstands Sept. 21.

Single-copy worries "Bauer Publishing today announced that it has canceled the launch of Cocktail Weekly," the company said in a terse statement. "Today's announcement reflects the uncertain conditions in the single-copy marketplace."

Universal, Berg ride with Barbaro: Film based on Bissinger article in Vanity Fair
By Michael Fleming
July 9, 2007
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117968254.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

Universal Pictures has acquired screen rights to "Gone Like the Wind," a Buzz Bissinger-penned article in the August issue of Vanity Fair about 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.

Peter Berg will direct the film and produce through his Film 44 shingle with Sarah Aubrey.

Barbaro won the 2006 Kentucky Derby so convincingly that many felt he could win horse racing's Triple Crown. Tragedy struck in the Preakness, when the horse bolted out of the gate and almost immediately shattered one of its rear forelegs.

New York more than vanity buy
By Matthew Flamm
July 8, 2007

There is a long tradition of rich guys overpaying for trophy media properties. But when Wall Street wizard Bruce Wasserstein nabbed New York magazine at the end of 2003, he seemed to be setting a new standard for vanity acquisitions.

The Lazard banker, who owned a number of trade publications, not only paid $55 million for a title earning only $1 million a year but also bested Mort Zuckerman in the dealmaking equivalent of a sumo match.

Since then, conditions have only gotten worse for print properties. But Mr. Wasserstein no longer looks like a media parvenu.

JANE'S GOODBYE: Cond? Nast's decision to fold Jane magazine early Monday was, despite a well-respected editor and a publisher brought in for a turnaround, widely considered inevitable for a magazine long on life support. A total of 60 staffers, including business and editorial, are affected, and though editor in chief Brandon Holley and publisher Carlos Lamadrid are assuredly leaving the company, the official line is that jobs will be sought within the company for the rest.

With both advertising and circulation woes, executives at the company said it had given up on Jane filling out its portfolio by reaching a twentysomething female demographic. Sources said there had been no talk of replacing Holley, though the future of Lamadrid, the magazine's third publisher since 2005, had been in question. The magazine was put on serious watch starting in March, and top brass made their final decision between Thursday and Saturday, just after returning from vacation.

SOBERING UP: Proof that a magazine's death can come even before it launches, Bauer Publishing has scrapped plans to launch Cocktail, its new twentysomething magazine set to make its debut in September. Cocktail would have been a weekly title with a cover price of $2.49. The company cited "uncertain conditions in the single-copy marketplace" as reason for its demise. Though Bauer has built a successful franchise on its stable of low-cost, newsstand-heavy magazines, from Woman's World to its celebrity weeklies In Touch and Life & Style, getting another low-cost title in the marketplace may have proven more difficult than before. Wholesalers have become frustrated about the difficulty in eeking out profits from magazines with cover prices below $2.50, according to reports from The New Single Copy, a magazine circulation newsletter. Additionally, some distributors have been asking for guarantees of payment up front from Bauer in order to distribute the magazine, according to one publishing executive. Though guarantees aren't unusual, "it can happen, especially if someone is unsure that something will sell," said the publishing executive. Executives from Bauer declined comment on distribution.

Gemstar-TV Guide Puts Itself Up for Sale
By Matthew Karnitschnig
July 10, 2007
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB118401337429261251.html?mod=home_whats_news_us

News Corp.'s 41%-owned affiliate Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. put itself on the market, a move that could lead to the breakup of the company whose holdings include the TV Guide magazine and cable channel, as well as patents on electronic television program guides.

Shares in Gemstar soared 15% in after-hours trading, after it announced its board had "authorized the company and its advisors to explore strategic alternatives intended to maximize shareholder value, which may include a sale of the company." Gemstar, which has a market capitalization of $2.2 billion, said it had hired investment bank UBS as its financial adviser.

A sale of Gemstar is likely to give News Corp. a way to sell its interest in the company, ending what has been a disastrous investment for the media group. News Corp. in 2002 wrote off $6 billion on its investment in Gemstar, which it acquired after a convoluted series of deals that began in 1998 when it sold TV Guide magazine to an affiliate of Tele-Communications Inc. for cash and stock. The TCI affiliate later merged with Gemstar, and News Corp. subsequently boosted its stake in the resulting company to about its present level.

See Jane Fold
By Keith J. Kelly

It turns out, Jane, the magazine, could not survive without Jane, the person.

Cond? Nast Publications yesterday said it was closing the magazine aimed at 20-something women. The August issue that hits in late July will be its last, ending a 10-year run.

The move comes nearly two years after launch editor Jane Pratt resigned under pressure from the magazine that bore her name. She was replaced by former Elle Girl editor Brandon Holley.

Two female mid-twenties media types have one unfurnished bedroom in a furnished 3BR Hell's Kitchen apartment available for one year starting on August 4. The apartment has a lot of character, a very large kitchen and nice sized living room and bathroom, and is on the third floor in a walk-up pre-war building complete with exposed brick. The bedroom for rent is on the smaller side (if you have a ton of stuff, this place might not be right for you) and can fit a full bed and a couple pieces of additional furniture. We are located in the heart of Hell's Kitchen within a couple blocks of multiple subway lines and right near Times Square, Central Park and a million bars and restaurants. Plus, if you work in one of the major pub companies, this location is ideal as we are two blocks from the Hearst building and very close to Time Inc., Conde Nast and many others as well. Rent is $1067 a month, and first month, last month and security deposit will be due to the landlord upon signing the lease. ***You will also be required to be the guarantor for your share of the apartment, so if you don't make three times your annual rent (roughly $36,000), you need to have a parent or guardian who will sign as a guarantor. If this place sounds like your future apartment, e-mail a little about yourself to hellskitchenapartment@yahoo.com.

I am a 23 yr old female recent college grad planning on relocating from Southern CA to NYC in September (October at the latest) to pursue a career in publishing. I'm looking for a roommate or room share situation (and would even be willing to consider a sublet situation depending on the details). I'd love to be in Manhattan but wouldn't mind being in the buroughs provided that transportation to Manhattan is good. I'm fairly quiet, very responsible, and respectful. I don't smoke or do drugs and am allergic to cats. I have no problem with other pets though. I'd like my roommate(s) to be around my age, non-smokers and drug-free. I am not a neat freak but do like a clean environment and have no problem pulling my weight. Since I am new to the city, ideally I'd to live with someone with whom I can be friends. Please send me an e-mail if this sounds like something that might work for you. I can let you know more details about my budget and situation. Send all replies to mekdancr@aol.com.
