******* BTW, Ed doesn't endorse the advertisement you see above. It's just what happens when you use a free e-newsletter service.
******* I want to pursue fashion journalism after I graduate from SMU, but sadly no fashion or design program is offered there. I researched for what seemed like weeks and also happened upon ED2010.com. I remember telling my mom I had found this amazing "secret" website (it's no secret, lol). MORE ONLINE 2. Advertising AgeJane Pratt on the End of Jane By Nat Ives 7/10/07 http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=119143 One day after Conde Nast Publications shut down Jane magazine, founder and namesake Jane Pratt used a special edition of her Sirius Satellite Radio show to blast what the title became after her departure two years ago. "I feel like Sassy was my baby; I feel like Jane was my second baby," said Ms. Pratt, who started Jane in 1997 and was the first editor of Sassy, a ground-breaking title for teen girls, before that. "I feel like I abandoned that baby and it went off and got on drugs or something. I do have guilt about that. What I really would have liked would have been to have kept more of a connection to the magazine." Ad pages sunk It isn't clear, of course, whether maintaining close ties would have been possible in the summer of 2005, when Ms. Pratt and Conde Nast split in what they called a mutual decision. But, in any case, it didn't happen. Brandon Holley was hired to succeed Ms. Pratt as editor in chief and Carlos Lamadrid was tapped to take over as publisher. What followed was rocky for everyone: A Conde Nast ad campaign tried without much luck to position Ms. Holley as "so Jane," while advertisers stuck their hands in their pockets and let ad pages sink 21% in 2006. One cover last year, showing Jessica Simpson wearing pink and biting her finger, appalled some old readers who had loved Ms. Pratt's less mainstream touch. MORE ONLINE

Sen. David Vitter, who acknowledged having contacted a Washington escort service, made the admission after being called by Hustler magazine, whose investigative reporter says the sex magazine is targeting "moral hypocrites." Less than three hours after the inquiry, the Louisiana Republican sent the Associated Press a statement Monday evening confirming that he had been in contact with Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the indicted escort-service owner dubbed the D.C. Madam. Washington reporter Dan Moldea, who is working with Hustler owner Larry Flynt, is collaborating with Palfrey on a book proposal and said yesterday that he found Vitter's number in her phone records late last week. "When you go through this list, there are a lot of just normal men who were patronizing this escort service," said Moldea, who specializes in covering organized crime. "I can assure you, we have no intention of hurting these people, no intention of interfering with their lives. This is about hypocrisy." MORE ONLINE

Last fall's wave of Spy magazine tributes may have left Graydon Carter nostalgic for the waggishness of those years — or maybe just for the reputed rivalry with his Vanity Fair predecessor and current best-selling author Tina Brown, dating back from when Spy published a fawning note from Brown to Michael Ovitz. The July issue of Vanity Fair excerpted Brown's book, "The Diana Chronicles," but one month later comes a parody of the book and Brown's writing style in the August issue, reprinted from Spy's British inspiration, Private Eye. Under a photo of Brown giving a thumbs up and a mock byline, author Craig Brown (no relation) takes aim at Brown's apparent fondness for the hyphenated phrase, for alliteration and for status indicators: "Those regal, rancorous, rough-hewn eyes seared…like a $5,000 kitchen knife from top store Macy's on New York's fashionable Broadway through butter served in the in-crowd, book-six-months-in-advance brasserie of super-sassy boutique hotel McDitzy's, Park Avenue." Brown's use of sourcing is also lampooned: "I was informed of it by a highly trained researcher who was told in confidence by a highly regarded source, who heard it from a highly placed member of the household who is now dead, so equally regrettably you have no means of checking it." SEE JANE LIVE: Though the magazine Jane Pratt founded was closed Monday, the former editor told several media reporters that she is hard at work on returning to the print world. When Pratt left Jane in July 2005, talk swirled that Pratt would launch a fortysomething women's title called Elizabeth, which is her middle name. But Elizabeth won't be her next act in print just yet. Though she did not reveal many details of her upcoming project, Pratt said she is working on a magazine geared toward readers in their teens and 20s. Pratt said she has a launch date and a company through which she will publish the title, but would not reveal either except to say she will not launch the title with Reader's Digest Association, now headed by former boss and ex-Fairchild chief executive officer Mary Berner. But until her next act in publishing, Pratt can be found on Sirius satellite radio, where she hosts a talk show Friday nights. On Tuesday, she hosted a show where she talked about Jane's closure and fielded a call from former Jane fashion editor Eric Nicholson, who's now senior fashion editor at Marie Claire. On comparing his new position to his job at Jane, Nicholson, an obvious Pratt loyalist, lovingly replied, "Yeah, it's definitely bigger and different. I wouldn't say better. My heart always will be at Jane magazine with you." Joanna Coles, are you listening? MORE ONLINE

f the media handed out awards for 2006-07, Richard Stengel would be a good bet to win Rookie of the Year honors. In his first year as Time's managing editor, he did the near-impossible: He made the magazine seem relevant. Given up for dead in the digital age, Stengel's Time has turned the corner at a breakneck clip. While Newsweek continues to produce solid work week after week, Stengel's moves and calculated publicity blitz have rendered its chief rival as a virtual afterthought in the newsweekly discussion. Even if you prefer to read Newsweek, that's a big accomplishment. "If you're not changing, you're doing something wrong," Stengel told me on Monday, revealing his philosophy and strategy in one sentence. MORE ONLINE
