******* Most magazines that fail are like leaking balloons, slowly losing readers, advertisers and interest until they deflate. Jane magazine, which announced on Monday that it would close after 10 years, was different. Although it had its business struggles, the magazine also had readers — women in their 20s and 30s — who didn’t just flip through it at the nail salon and forget about it once the polish was dry. They loved it or hated it, or both loved and hated it. We saw this up close over the last few months on a promotional tour for our book, “How Sassy Changed My Life: A Love Letter to the Greatest Teen Magazine of All Time.” Repeatedly, women we met at book readings around the country wanted to talk about Jane, a magazine created by Jane Pratt after the demise of Sassy, where she had also been the editor in chief. In the late 1980s and early ’90s, at a time when Seventeen, YM and Teen were serving up old-fashioned boy advice and dieting tips, Sassy told adolescent girls that spring break was lame, that it was better to be a reporter on the school newspaper than a cheerleader, and that Kurt Cobain was superior to New Kids on the Block. It was smart, feminist and cool — and it assumed its readers were, too. Many of Ms. Pratt’s fans picked up Jane in the hope that it would be a Sassy for the postcollegiate set, and in some ways it was. It made fun of the Miss America pageant, for being out of touch and for its average-looking contestants. It profiled women who sold their eggs to finance book projects and featured models with clear braces. MORE ONLINE

The Week, soon to be the only title in the U.S. still owned by Dennis Publishing founder Felix Dennis, announced on Tuesday its president, Justin Smith, is stepping down. Smith will join Atlantic Media as president of its consumer division, a new position. He will be responsible for The Atlantic magazine, its Web site, theatlantic.com and its investment in 02138, a new title targeting young Harvard alumni. Steven Kotok, general manager for The Week, will succeed Smith. Smith joined The Week in September 2001, and in six years helped grow the magazine into a 475,000-circulation newsweekly and turn a small profit. Through March 2007, ad pages for the title grew 28 percent, to 129, over last year, according to Publishers Information Bureau. While his exit comes as Maxim, Stuff and Blender are being acquired by Quadrangle Group in the third quarter, Smith said concern over the future of The Week amidst the transition did not drive his decision. "Felix asked me to bring The Week to profitability. I did, so I consider my work done," he said. "Simultaneously [Atlantic owner] David Bradley had this incredible opportunity to grow and build this company." Smith's departure comes three months after group publisher Carolyn Kremins left The Week in March to join Cookie as vice president and publisher.
3. Fashion Week Daily
Virginia Smith has a new assistant, and she's a budding socialite to boot. Serena Nikkhah has joined Vogue as fashion assistant to the magazine's fashion market and accessories director from Marc Jacobs, where she was a merchandiser. A graduate of Georgetown University, where she studied art history, Nikkhah is also of half-Persian descent. In London, the PYT was very much a part of the nightlife scene and was even rumored to have dated a Saudi Prince at one point

Take heed, bloviators and canoodlers: There's going to be a lot more Page Six soon. Having published two editions of Page Six: The Magazine, the New York Post is set to take the title weekly sometime this fall, inserting it as a supplement into the Sunday paper. Editor in chief Col Allan, via a spokesman, declined either to confirm or deny the plans, which multiple sources confirmed. Allan is now said to be looking for an editor to head up the launch. We assume that Jared Paul Stern, who edited the first issue, won't be reprising his duties.
5. Fishbowl NY (Mediabistro)
Four-step plan to a very, very expensive magazine cover: 1. OK! pays Eva Longoria and Tony Parker more than $2 million for exclusive photo rights to their wedding. People silently cries. 2. Photographers from OK! attend the wedding, which takes place in Paris. Pictures are taken, paparazzi eat expensive canapes. 3. The magazine's photo editors, design staff and production team work feverishly at putting out the finished edition for this week's release date. 4. Readers everywhere get to see what a $2 million wedding cover looks like.
6. Media Industry Newsletter
First major strategic move--outside of personnel--by Reader's Digest Association president/ceo Mary Berner in her four-month reign is to target RD to younger readers with a total editorial overhaul. Makes us wonder whether Berner and hired-in-March RDA Inspiration Group president Eva Dillon (a past TV Guide/Glamour/Jane/Cookie exec under Mary) were in sync with Leo, who was a September 2001 hire of the Tom Ryder/ Eric Schrier ancien r?gime--and an editor-in-chief since launching Child in 1986. "Jackie's in charge and she's chomping at the bit to 'open up' RD," says Dillon. "We are working very closely together." Circ drop will be done, in Dillon's words, "naturally. We are going to sharply reduce our mailing to potential subscribers"--unless, of course, they happen to be 30- somethings. RD's Mediamark Research Inc.-measured median age is typically 50-something. "RD" rate base 10 years ago: 15 million.
