Memo Pad: Hedi’s Headlines (1st item)

For the first time in its 10-year history, Wallpaper is inviting outsiders to edit the magazine. Hedi Slimane, Jeff Koons and Dieter Rams will be the three guest editors of Wallpaper's October issue. Each is designing his own cover for the London title, and each has been given his own 20-page section, said publishing director Andrew Black. In the Slimane segment, there's an interview with the designer by German artist Thomas Demand, and 10 collectible, poster-size photographs shot by Slimane. The photos are very personal ones, said Black: There are fashion shots, details from everyday life and abstract images. Slimane has been hands-on, in touch with the magazine's staff every day. "We're an eclectic title with so many disciplines of design — we decided to have three guest editors instead of one," said Black. He said the editors chose Slimane because "he's someone we've admired for a long time." And also, no doubt, a designer with some extra time on his hands since leaving Dior Homme.

A fashion label may get the best endorsement when its wares show up on a well-dressed city dweller photographed for fashion industry veteran Scott Schuman's popular blog The Sartorialist. But for those who want more direct brand promotion, Style.com and Men.style.com will begin to sell ads for Thesartorialist.blogspot.com beginning Sept. 1. The partnership is the first time the Cond?Net properties have sold ads for a brand outside the company stable. Schuman's blog, where he posts commentary on stylish men and women on the street, attracts more than one million unique visitors a month. He also pens a regular column for GQ and guest-blogs on Men.style.com and Style.com. "The Sartorialist reaches the person who really cares about fashion as a form of self-expression. He chronicles very chic people and his constituency are the people he photographs," said Dee Salomon, senior vice president of Cond?Net. The site seeks to attract upscale automotive and consumer electronics as well as fashion brands. Style.com and Men.style.com and The Sartorialist will share advertising revenue generated from the blog.

A Price for Steamy Photos, Not for Publication
By Maria Aspan

In a move that recalls the golden age of gossip reporting, OK! Magazine may have guaranteed its access to a celebrity couple by purchasing, but not publishing, photos of them in a sex act.

Reports surfaced last week in The New York Daily News and various Web sites that OK! had paid $400,000 for photographs and a video of the singer Nick Lachey and his girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo in a hot tub. Mr. Lachey is no stranger to living his domestic life in the public eye, given his experience as a star of the reality television series “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” with his then-wife, Jessica Simpson. And Ms. Minnillo, a former MTV host and Entertainment Tonight reporter, is also a familiar face on the celebrity gossip circuit. But the photos, some of which had already been published, were a little more explicit than basic cable fare.

A spokesman for OK! said that the magazine had not confirmed that the photos were purchased, and declined to comment further.

Where Have All the Girls Gone?
By Nat Ives

When Ingrid Festin was young, she subscribed to Highlights magazine. As she got a little older she subscribed to American Girl and World. "Then in my teenage years, I subscribed to Seventeen and Teen People," she said. And now, as a 21-year-old paralegal in Astoria, N.Y.? "Aside from my Entertainment Weekly subscription, I read almost everything online."

Have all the young women who once loved magazines gone digital? Last week's shuttering of Jane and the aborted launch of Cocktail Weekly, despite the circumstances particular to each book, seem to suggest that yes, they're leaving magazines. But a closer look shows that most young women are actually still there reading -- it's more that the tight ad market and cacophony of new media options are combining to cull the field of titles.

Magazines' reach among girls between 12 and 19 years old has declined in the past five years, especially among the 15-to-17-year-old set, which saw the percentage of girls who said they had read a magazine in the previous 30 days fall to 79.9% from 85.6%, according to Mediamark Research.

Glamour Is Also in the Business of Endorsing Unrealistic Concepts of Beauty on Film
By Jossip Editors

Glamour’s about to kick off a third season of its movie offshoot? Surely we should have seen a press release about the first or second season of Reel Moments before … but, well, no. So what is this fantastic example of brand synergy?!

As it so happens, Cindi Leive’s crew enlists Hollywood ladies to bring the visions of readers to life — all under the guise of promoting women filmmakers, but to be sure, it’s little more than a ruse to get Glamour’s name into to film festivals. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, and Bryce Dallas Howard have all taken part in the little gimmick in the past. Now, production is about to begin for the third set of short films thunk up by the magazine’s readers who submitted their demographic information, psychological profiles, and social security numbers to the contest.

In a contest in Glamour’s January issue, the magazine asked readers to submit essays of 750 words or less about an event in their lives that made them feel strong, wise or happy. After Glamour culled thousands of entries down to hundreds, [Kirsten] Dunst, [Kate] Hudson and [Rita] Wilson each picked one story to adapt and shoot in L.A. with a mid-six-figure budget in just three days: no reshoots.

OK! Mag Swimming In Murky Ethical Waters
By Jossip Editors
7/16/07
http://www.jossip.com/paris-hilton/ok-mag-swimming-in-murky-ethical-waters-20070716/

“OK!, which is the American version of a British magazine,” writes the NY Times, “has acknowledged that it occasionally pays for cover stories, mostly in efforts to build relationships with the celebrities it covers,” [Ed: think overpaying for Eva Longoria’s snoozeworthy nuptials.] “But while paying for the rights to exclusive stories and photos has become increasingly common among OK!’s American competitors, buying photos to protect them from being published is more unusual and ethically dubious.”

And by “ethically dubious,” what the Times actually means is “awesome blackmail potential.”

“If OK! did pay for the images in order to repress them,” the Grey Lady continues, “then the magazine now holds compromising photos of two celebrities it will want to cover in the future. The situation raises questions about what sort of access to the celebrities the magazine may have negotiated in return for the favor.”

I'm looking for someone to sublet my apartment on the Upper East Side (78th St. between 2nd and 3rd) for the month of August. It's a very nice two-bedroom apartment on the first floor (just one flight of stairs!) with a full eat-in kitchen, living room, and two real bedrooms. Your bedroom would be the front one with lots of light and a big window overlooking 78th St. My roommate will be there and he's a very nice, very quiet, respectful guy who is around about every other night. We've lived together for two years and I can vouch that he's great! Rent (including all utilities and cable) is $1175. Please e-mail me if you're interested at oalexp@hotmail.com. I'm happy to answer any additional questions. Also, if you're interested in a 2-bedroom, we're both moving out officially in September, so if you move in, I'm sure you could talk to the landlord about taking over the apartment.
