******* A former writer for Cosmo politan magazine is hopping mad after an article he wrote in the July issue of Maxim blasting the advice offered in women's magazines ran his byline as "Anonymous." Ostensibly, Michael Callahan's name was removed to give the article an added sense of intrigue, as if it were written by a whistleblower who was shedding much needed light on the shadowy world of relationship advice offered by women's magazines. Callahan was described as an editor who has spent the last five years working at "various women's magazines." However, the reality is that while Callahan did work at Cosmopolitan, he left in November 2004 and since then has not worked on a women's mag. MORE ONLINE
2. Ad Age
he march of new media has forced everyone from Time Inc. to Hearst Corp. to Conde Nast Publications to re-examine priorities and the path ahead, but the future is especially unintuitive for a company like Meredith Corp. in Des Moines, Iowa. Its properties -- including storied magazines such as Ladies' Home Journal and more than a dozen network-TV affiliates -- all but define traditional media. Since Stephen M. Lacy became president-CEO a year ago, however, he has expanded Meredith's capabilities and reimagined its priorities. So far he has overseen the acquisition of three interactive ad agencies and, just in June, the health search engine Healia. The company bought one magazine, the hip do-it-yourself book ReadyMade, then closed another one, long-struggling Child. With these and other moves completed in his first 12 months, Advertising Age met Mr. Lacy in New York to talk over the outlook. MORE ONLINE
3. Information Week
The mainstream media is still more trusted than social networking sites, video sites, and blogs for political news, according to research released Monday. Some 72% of 383 people surveyed last month said they looked primarily to the mainstream media for political information, according to research released Monday by market research firms Nucleus Research and KnowledgeStorm. More than 56% of survey respondents cited newspapers and magazines as the sources that they trust the most when seeking political information. "People didn't trust what they found on the Internet," said Rebecca Wettemann, VP of research for Nucleus Research. MORE ONLINE
4. La Times
PlanetOut Inc., publisher of Out magazine and the Gay.com website, plans to cut about 15% of its workforce in a restructuring to reduce costs. Severance payments will cost as much as $600,000, and closing offices in Buenos Aires and London will require as much as $100,000, the San Francisco company said in a regulatory filing. MORE ONLINE
5. WWD
The four-month hiatus between Portfolio's first two issues is about to end, as will the momentary lull in scrutiny of the new business magazine. The September issue is expected to look different — what some have called a redesign, a spokeswoman calls the "tinkering" intended to take place in the lag between issues one and two. The front of the book, criticized by some for its lack of magazine-style packaging and pacing, is said to be more graphic this time around, but the names of sections and basic organization reportedly are not changing. To ramp up subscriptions, "synergistic titles" (the spokeswoman could not say which ones or how many) within the Conde Nast stable are carrying advertisements and blow-in cards for Portfolio, which didn't happen the first time around. And speaking of those other books, the spokeswoman vehemently denied reports that fellow Conde Nast editors' feathers were ruffled by editor in chief Joanne Lipman's approaching their staffs for jobs without following internal house protocol. (WWD is also owned by Conde Nast). As the magazine prepares to move monthly, it's already made one more hire, though not within the company — Jeff Garigliano, currently executive editor of Departures, will join as senior editor in August. It remains to be seen whether the looming sale of Dow Jones will send any of Lipman's former Wall Street Journal colleagues running to 4 Times Square. WORKING BEAUTY: Beauty coverage and advertising may not be the first things that come to mind at the mention of Working Mother magazine, but like so many publishers looking to attract the still print-faithful beauty industry's pages, Joan Sheridan would like to change that. By hiring Beth Brandes Roth from CosmoGirl to be the magazine's first beauty and fashion director for advertising sales, Sheridan said, "we are making a real focused effort on the beauty and fashion community to tell them the story of the information needs of our readers, and how they can reach them." 6. Times Online
A free men’s magazine, positioned between the naked entertainment of Nuts and Zoo and the upmarket GQ, will be launched in the autumn with the backing of several high-profile magazine and business figures. Around half a million copies of the weekly title will be given away in London and in five other cities, supported by a ?7.5 million investment raised by the former Emap and IPC boss Sir David Arculus from investors including Stephen Marks, the founder of French Connection, and Matthew Vaughn, the film-maker. The title is the brainchild of Mike Soutar, the former editorial director of Time Warner’s IPC Media, where he presided over the launch of Nuts. It is one of the titles that he hopes to side-step in another attempt to reinvent the men’s market, which has become dominated by downmarket titles. MORE ONLINE
7. Forbes
In a media marketplace heavy on celebrity news, stories are interesting, but pictures reign supreme. Want proof? Just look at the price tags. The past few years have seen an explosive rise in the prices paid for exclusive celebrity photos. Driven by the public's desire for the nitty-gritty of celebrity life and celebrities' moves to control--and profit from--their images, the photos on our list are testament to a maturing market worth tens of millions. In Forbes' list of the 10 most expensive celebrity photos, we surveyed top-priced photos sales in the United States over the past 10 years (our estimates are not adjusted for inflation). Since the entertainment magazines are notoriously tight-lipped about such sales, we were forced to rely on published reports and only considered photo sales where information was available.
