Memo Pad: Old News
By Amy Wicks

In just a few short weeks, Lindsay Lohan will be on the September covers of Maxim and Elle — and while the timing couldn't be better for Maxim, some argue Elle might not share the same fate. Maxim readers probably won't care that Lohan could be headed behind bars; in fact, that probably will only increase her appeal to its babe-hungry readers. But Elle readers seeking pages of fashion and style advice might be turned off by another Lohan arrest and pending court date, which will take place just days after the magazine hits newsstands.

Sources said Elle's interview and photo shoot took place prior to Lohan's stint in rehab, so it's likely the story doesn't include any discussion of her most recent run-in with the law. A spokeswoman for Elle said the magazine won't comment on the issue until it hits newsstands on Aug. 14. A Maxim spokesman confirmed the magazine went to press three weeks ago.

One thing is clear: the new Elle interview is sure to be dramatically different from the one that accompanied Lohan's appearance on the magazine's cover last September, in which she defended her dating habits. She did, however, briefly tell contributing writer Andrew Goldman that she wasn't doing cocaine. "There you have it. It's not true," she said then. Lohan later added, "My mother would take me out of the business."

Memo Pad: Short Stint & In the Mail

SHORT STINT

Only a few months after being named beauty director at Cosmopolitan, Jenny Bailly will exit the magazine Friday "to freelance," a spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday. Bailly was brought over from O, The Oprah Magazine, in December, and presented to beauty advertisers and others at a Hearst Tower cocktail party in April. She presided over a team of two and a big chunk of editorial pages. The spokeswoman said the magazine is expected to name a successor next week. Beauty is Cosmo's single largest advertising category, and partnerships like the magazine's beauty-pegged outdoor advertising with New York City's tourism marketing organization have driven home the poin

IN THE MAIL

For those wondering what Jane subscribers will receive now that the title has folded, fear not — Cond? Nast will send those 450,000 or so readers either Allure, Glamour or Lucky. Insiders say a good chunk of those subs will likely end up becoming Glamour subscriptions, being that its demographics are the most similar to Jane's. Though the extra subscriptions could provide a short-term boost to Glamour's circulation, retention rates from subscriptions rolled over from another title after a closure are usually lower than 10 percent. As for ads placed in Jane's September issue, advertisers will have their choice to either run an ad in another Cond? Nast title or pull their insertion order, sources said.

Want to Try That Pricey Moisturizer? Pick Up Allure

Allure magazine has stepped up its effort to make the most of print and online at the same time, bringing back its August sampling issue after a successful dry run last year. Many products advertised in this year's version, which a cover line touts as "The Free Stuff Issue," are available as samples, either bound into the magazine or through the AllureAccess.com website.

Maybelline New York's ad for Expert Wear Eye Shadow includes samples, for example, in three colors. Some of Clean & Clear's advertised Advantage Acne Control Kit, on the other hand, is available at Allure Access.

Almost everything mentioned in the issue's editorial -- 91 products from $200 T3 blow-dryers to $300 Shiseido skin serums to smaller fare like lipsticks -- is being given away in limited quantities as well, to readers who enter at Allure.com/freestuff.

Rodale Looks To Bulk Up
By Keith J. Kelly

Rodale, publisher of the South Beach Diet books and magazines such as Men's Health, Prevention, and Runner's World, is looking for a war chest for an expansion, and industry sources say it has retained JPMorgan to help it explore its strategic options.

Normally, that implies the entire company may be put on the block, but our source said the closely held family-owned Rodale is not there yet. Instead, the company is telling people they are more interested in "strategic partners" who can provide the debt-free company with an infusion of cash needed to expand.

One source said Elevation Partners, an investment firm that includes U2 frontman Bono and Roger McNamee, has been scoping out Rodale operations. "Elevation was in there. [But] what were they talking about?" one industry source said. Elevation has been looking high and low in the media realm, especially for companies with significant Internet upside. Last year, it picked up an estimated 40 percent stake in family-owned Forbes Inc.

No Deal

In an explosive round of developments involving The Source magazine, the U.S. trustee in charge of the case has urged the bankruptcy court judge to reject a settlement deal. The agreement would have ended the company's long-running bankruptcy and handed all assets, lock, stock and barrel, to Black Enterprise/Greenwich Street Growth Partners.

BE/GS is an investment firm partially funded by money from Earl Graves Sr., founder of Black Enterprise, and his son, Earl Graves Jr. Trustee Richard C. Morrissey said the reorganization plan is "deficient and fails to meet the standard of containing 'adequate information' " for creditors and other potential suitors.

The finding is the latest in a series of developments affecting the controversial proceedings. Charles Simpson, a former lawyer for BE/GS, filed a motion alleging bankruptcy fraud by BE/GS and the man BE/GS picked to run the magazine, Jeffrey Scott.

Page Six: Sumner Kin Rips Newsweek
By Richard Johnson

THE battling Redstones are now gunning for Newsweek. In a letter to the magazine obtained by Page Six, Sumner's brother, Edward Redstone, rants: "Newsweek's recent attempt at covering a legal dispute among family members flew well wide off the mark. Rather than focus on the matters in question, Newsweek chose sensationalism, drawing inside stories and innuendo from a host of irrelevant parties, relatives or not . . . most of which is not true." He then slams the weekly for interviewing his son, Michael, on the issue. "Worse still, the use of my son, a manipulated young man with a long history of psychiatric issues, all in the name of a salacious tale to fill Newsweek's pages, represents a true lapse of ethics. Newsweek's readers deserve better." A Newsweek rep did not return our call. Sumner Redstone, who has been sued by Michael as well as his son Brent, is now feuding with daughter Shari, Viacom's vice-chair, and trying to stop her from succeeding him

Matrix Blogger Explains It All

We're of the school of thought that a joke requiring explanation is a joke failed. We also spend a lot of time explaining our jokes. The estimable Adam Sternbergh, on the other hand, we always thought tossed off bons mots and witticism of such perfection they required no explanation. Apparently, however, we were wrong. A friend pointed us the other day to Behind the Approval Matrix, a new-this-week blog that, well, explains Adam's Approval Matrix jokes. Didn't get his reference this week to "That bizarre Elvis Mitchell cameo on Entourage," to pick a random example? Behind the Approval Matrix explains: "According to his Wikipedia entry Elvis Mitchell is a former film critic for the Times, and is one of the most well-known African-American critics in the United States. On Entourage he interviewed Vince, E, and Walsh about the genius behind Medellin." Now you know.
