Memo Pad: Faces and Names (1st item)

Though fashion magazines' September issues seem to contain ads for every clothing label under the sun, usually only one glamorous gal gets to grace the cover. And in surveying this year's choices, it appears that editors, like gentlemen, definitely prefer blondes. Sienna Miller is on the cover of September Vogue, its biggest issue ever. Apparently editor in chief Anna Wintour is a huge fan of the British actress—Miller also appeared on the magazine's January 2006 cover. In Style spotlights Gwen Stefani, while W (also with its biggest issue ever) has Gwyneth Paltrow.

Marie Claire opts for Ashley Olsen; Vanity Fair features supermodel Gisele B?ndchen, and Harper's Bazaar photographed Kate Hudson.

Allure and Elle made more controversial choices. Allure chose pop tart gone wild Britney Spears. Why would a magazine about beauty put on its cover an unstable woman who shaved her own head, went to rehab and is a regular on celebrity weeklies' worst dressed lists? Editor in chief Linda Wells explained in her editor's letter: "I thought we could present the profile as her comeback. Perhaps Britney's story would be redemptive, like those of Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore and Mariah Carey before her." Instead, Britney took the photos and bailed — she missed four scheduled interviews with writer Judith Newman, and the accompanying comeback story went untold. Newman instead penned a story about the state of celebrities in 2007, and Allure crafted the cover line "Britney Spears: Tells Us Nothing and Everything."

Memo Pad: Still Green?
By Stephanie D. Smith
8/6/07
http://wwd.com/memopad/article/117822?page=1

Now that Earth Day has come and gone, will magazine editors stick with their eco-friendly initiatives? Vanity Fair, Elle, Domino and Town & Country all published special green-themed issues last spring, and while most agree the cause was worth backing, some may approach the topic differently next year.

Town & Country, according to vice president and publisher Jim Taylor, wanted to be involved with the green movement since its affluent readership has the means to buy eco-friendly, but more expensive, appliances and cars. But the magazine will not dedicate an entire issue to the subject in 2008; instead it will incorporate articles on green living into each issue. As Taylor explained, "I can't come out and say it was a huge hit in terms of bringing in lots of new advertisers." The April issue ran ads for special green beauty products L'Or de Vie and Amore Pacific, but "there aren't a lot of huge luxury advertising categories yet for this whole green movement," he said.

Elle and Vanity Fair produced their second annual green issues in May, but the titles produced different results. Elle's green issue outperformed the one in 2006, which was the worst seller of last year's first half. Ad pages for this year's issue were up 22 percent from 2006, while the magazine increased its newsstand sale by double digits. The Hachette Filipacchi Media monthly will produce another green-themed issue next year, with Laurie David guest editing for the third year in a row. Also, its Living section will dedicate a small column to green in every issue beginning next year.

Ray Foodies Unite
By Lucia Moses

Celebrity chef Rachael Ray is bringing some of her Food Network buddies to the pages of Reader’s Digest Association’s Every Day With Rachael Ray. Starting with the September issue, on-screen sidekick Evette Rios will pen her own column, “Kitchen Fix,” while pal Daisy Martinez will share Latin cooking and culture in a new column, “Mucho Gusto.” And The Every Day Faves section, which already covers home and fashion product-picks, has expanded to include a beauty page.

This beefed-up lifestyle content comes under the purview of Sonal Dutt, who was hired as the title’s new lifestyle director from Hachette Filipacchi Media’s Woman’s Day, where she was associate editor. Dutt takes over the lifestyle sections previously handled by executive editor Maile Carpenter.

Editor Silvana Nardone said the additions are in keeping with the magazine’s original mission to combine food and lifestyle and expand its personalities beyond Ray. “From day one, Rachael Ray and I have always wanted to include other voices and personalities,” Nardone said. “She never intended it to be all about her.”

Survey: Magazine Web Site Visitors Prefer Accessing Content Solely Online
By Jason Fell

More than 80 percent of people who visit the Web sites of major monthly U.S. magazines say they don’t subscribe or purchase the print edition, a recent survey conducted by Nielsen//NetRatings, a service of the Nielsen Company and Mediamark Research Inc., says.

The survey, which looked at 23 high-circulation monthly magazines and the traffic to their Web sites, found also that male visitors (90 percent) were slightly more likely than women (83 percent) to read a magazine’s content only online. Among the individual titles studied, the amount of web-only users ranged between 65 and 83 percent.

Nielsen//NetRatings uses metering technology and a representative panel to collect and report consumer Internet usage, including reach, frequency and time spent metrics, a statement says. The Nielsen Company and MRI plan to publish the survey results monthly starting after the release of Nielsen//NetRatings’ monthly data from NetView, an Internet audience measurement service.

Stuff Magazine to Fold Into Maxim
By Lucia Moses
8/6/07
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003621212

The future owners of Dennis Publishing's men's titles plan to fold Stuff as a standalone magazine and make it a section—called Stuff for Men—in flagship Maxim, a source told Mediaweek. It is believed the October issue, which is long past closing, will be the last. Many staffers are expected to stay on. John Lumpkin, publisher of Stuff, said a change in Stuff's publishing schedule is news to him. "There's been no discussion of suspending publication," he said.

The news hardly comes as a shock; it was widely expected Stuff would take a different form after it was sold, along with Dennis Publishing’s other U.S. men’s titles, to private equity firm Quadrangle Group, in a $240-plus million deal. Alpha Media Group, the new name for Dennis Publishing’s men’s titles, is expected to close on the deal as early as next week.

Dennis launched Stuff as a smaller-circ, shopping-focused title, to block Emap’s FHM from gaining ground on Maxim by offering advertisers a lower-cost alternative to Maxim. But Stuff has teetered between the red and black, and FHM magazine folded late last year (however FHMonline.com continues to publish), leading some to question Stuff’s reason for being.
