******* Before many Portfolio staffers were even at their desks Tuesday morning, deputy editor Jim Impoco had already left the building, having been dismissed by editor in chief Joanne Lipman. He left without clearing out his desk. A spokeswoman said only that Impoco had departed the magazine, though multiple sources confirmed the New York Observer's report on its Web site Tuesday afternoon that he had been fired. Impoco was an early Portfolio hire, having been recruited from the Sunday business section of The New York Times. Before that, he was assistant managing editor at Fortune. And sources said he's already put out feelers to those old stomping grounds. The relationship between Impoco and his boss had been deteriorating for months. Staffers recalled tension at meetings, where Impoco would openly question Lipman's editorial judgment. Impoco championed a piece by Kurt Eichenwald about terrorism, and when Lipman opted to kill it, sources said a heated discussion ensued. (Another, different story by Eichenwald will be in the second issue). MORE ONLINE

James Wood, a senior editor at The New Republic, where he has been the literary critic for the past 12 years, is leaving to become a staff writer at The New Yorker. The English-born Mr. Wood, who was appointed chief literary critic of The Guardian of London in 1992 when he was just 26, moved to The New Republic in 1995. At The New Yorker, he will be one of several staffers who write about books. In some literary circles, Mr. Wood has been described as a brutal critic who has debunked many of the country?s most admired writers, including Don DeLillo, Toni Morrison and Thomas Pynchon. Others regard him as one of the most respected critics of his generation. MORE ONLINE

Hearst Corp. plans to announce today its plans to acquire closely held start-up Kaboodle Inc., a service for sharing shopping recommendations and style advice online. The deal marks Hearst's attempt to tap a new area of e-commerce that combines online social networking with shopping, as it pursues new ways to engage magazine readers online while investing in fast-growing Internet businesses. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. With more than two million U.S. unique monthly visitors, Kaboodle.com, Santa Clara, Calif., allows shoppers to vouch for products they find on other shopping Web sites by "tagging" them with relevant key words that make them easier for others to find. The site's 250,000 registered users can also rate and review the products they save, which range from kitchen knives to stiletto heels. MORE ONLINE
4. The New York Observer
Over the past several months, the Hearst Corporation has been quietly bundling up buildings south of Columbus Circle and selling others to major developers like Mort Zuckerman. In July, the publishing giant purchased a 21,000-square-foot apartment building at 811 Ninth Avenue for $17.1 million. In June, it purchased a four-story building across the street for $4.9 million at 828 Ninth Avenue. In May, it purchased an 8,100-square-foot building at 304 West 56th Street, a block from its skyscraper headquarters, for $7.6 million. All the buildings are blocks from the headquarters, which opened last year. What?s clear is that Hearst wants these buildings and wants them very badly. Beyond the fact that they?re overpaying?$1,000 per foot is the going rate for office towers, not Hell?s Kitchen apartment buildings?they?re also aggressively pursuing them. MORE ONLINE
