******* What a difference an issue makes. In April, the business magazine Portfolio arrived after months of heavy promotion from Cond? Nast Publications and breathless anticipation from the New York media world. Last week, the run-up to the second issue, to reach newsstands Wednesday, took a decidedly less reverent turn. On Thursday, The New York Post’s Page Six devoted one of its entries to a classified ad placed in Backstage. According to the ad, the magazine’s Web site, Portfolio.com, is seeking “intelligent, charismatic and humorous” actors to play hosts on its new business news Webcast. Candidates are encouraged to “Think Tina Fey,” in a reference to the former “Saturday Night Live” head writer and comedian whose wry delivery of fake news headlines became famous on the “Weekend Update” skit. Mike Soutar refuses to say who or what will be featured on the cover of Short List, a new men’s magazine he is introducing next month in Britain. But one thing seems certain: if it is a female model, she will wear at least a bit of clothing. “No nudity, no profanity,” said Mr. Soutar, a former top executive at IPC, a British magazine unit of Time Warner, who now leads a group of investors behind Short List. “We don’t want to embarrass our readers.” That pledge reflects a minor revolution in the men’s magazine business in Britain, a proving ground for the “lads’ mag” phenomenon of the 1990s. The formula—a lowbrow blend of bare-breasted B-listers and bawdy jokes—has lately run out of gas. MORE ONLINE

Questions about the skills college journalists need to master to prepare for successful careers in a new media landscape aren’t new—but the answers keep changing. For instance, in 1995, an article in Quill, a publication of the Society of Professional Journalists, deemed the ability to “deal with new media such as electronic newspapers or World Wide Web pages” as “nice, but not necessary.” So David Wendelken, an associate professor of journalism at James Madison University, told a chuckling crowd Friday during the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s annual convention in Washington. Suffice to say, precious few journalism educators would agree with that assessment today. And yet journalism education is lagging behind industry in embracing the new media technologies that students will need to be competitive in the work place, according to a paper presented Friday. The extraordinary thing about the final Harry Potter book isn't that it has sold umpteen millions of copies. It's that the news media—traditional and non-traditional, print and digital—have treated the story with an unusual degree of human decency. Maybe there's a lesson to be learned. Although copies of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" were in circulation in the days leading up to its official publication date of July 21, news organizations and individual bloggers, almost unanimously, refused to disclose details of the novel. They didn't reveal the ending. They didn't make public even the usual plot and character bits routinely mentioned in book reviews. MORE ONLINE
