Ah, to Be Sweet Seventeen
By Johnnie L. Roberts and Aisha Eady
August 20-27, 2007 issue
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20226444/site/newsweek/

You're a 17-year-old-girl, within weeks of entering your senior year at Hometown High. "Hot Hair." Check. "Sexy Shoes." Check. And you're armed with the one "Flirting Move" that "Guys Can't Resist!" All thanks to Seventeen magazine's all-important back-to-school issue. Since 1944, Seventeen has helped angst-ridden good girls fend off fashion faux pas, broken hearts and acne breakouts, and catch up on fresh-faced celebrities.

So in an era when being bad is the teen-girl rage, what is Seventeen doing? It's letting Us Weekly and People obsess over Lindsay's relapses and Britney's breakdowns. Seventeen's back-to-school cover girl is singer Ashlee Simpson, who is "Crazy in Love" and has no rap sheet. "She's gorgeous," swoons Ann Shoket, Seventeen magazine's new editor. Shoket picked Ashlee, the younger sister of Daisy Dukes-wearing Jessica, because she is "living life to the best of her potential"—unlike the bad girls who get all the ink. "Girls are very smart," says the 35-year-old Shoket. "If they are giving attention and respect to a celebrity who's not repaying them with the same respect, it's not fair." In the back-to-school issue, Lohan is mentioned only once, when Shoket advises her to "sleep more, party less," and notes, "Everybody needs some downtime, Linds."

It's all part of the Seventeen way of seeing the glass as half full (and not with a cosmopolitan consumed on a pantyless drive down Sunset Boulevard). "Seventeen differs from celebrity gossip magazines because the whole magazine isn't based on pointing out the faults in celebs," says Cathy Lee, 14, of Honolulu. Since the April issue, which featured a "sunny ... pink-cheeked" Avril Lavigne, the Hearst Corp. magazine has seen monthly newsstand sales climb an additional 18,000 copies through June. Monthly newsstand sales for this year's first half averaged 356,000 copies, up almost 9 percent from a year ago. It has 2 million subscribers and 13 million readers a month, says Hearst. A relaunch of Seventeen.com in April has been drawing 1.3 million unique visitors a month, up 25 percent through June.

Celebrity Magazines Gain, but Not Industry Circulation
By RICHARD P?REZ-PE?A
August 14, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/14/business/media/14mag.html?_r=1&ref=media&oref=slogin

Magazine circulation continues to hold steady this year, in contrast to declining sales of newspapers, with big increases among celebrity-oriented magazines, according to figures released yesterday.

Sales of most large-circulation magazines changed little from the first half of 2006 to the first six months of 2007, according to the numbers compiled by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

The biggest exception was Time magazine, whose circulation dropped sharply, to 3.4 million from 4.1 million, a 17 percent decline that resulted mostly from a planned retrenchment announced last year. The magazine cut back on expensive promotional campaigns that tend not to draw many long-term subscribers and on sales to buyers who are not the actual readers—doctors’ offices and barbershops, for example—and are often less appealing to advertisers.

NBC's To Catch a Predator takes another hit in Esquire
By Claudia Feldman
August 13, 2007
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/5048069.html

A TV news organization often criticized for ethical lapses takes another hit in the September issue of Esquire magazine.

Luke Dittrich's story says the staff of Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator manipulated and controlled law enforcement officers during a sting in Murphy in north Texas, blurring the lines between reporters and police and resulting in the suicide of a former district attorney.

Editor David Granger is calling on NBC to cancel To Catch a Predator before someone else dies.

'Old Media' Still Resonate, Survey Says
By Gregory Solman
August 14, 2007
http://www.adweek.com/aw/national/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003625365

How do different generations use media? That was the question of a study released last week by Deloitte & Touche's Technology, Media and Telecommunications practice.

Drawn from a Harrison Group survey of 2,200 consumers 13 to 75 years old, the topline findings of the "State of the Media Democracy" offered hope for traditional media and yielded some fresh insights into new-media trends, according to Ed Moran, director of product innovation in Deloite's New York office.

For example, consistent across all generational segments—"millennials" (13-24), "Gen-Xers" (25-41), "Boomers," (42-60) and "Matures" (61-75)—nearly three-quarters of consumers said they enjoy magazines even though they acknowledge being able to read the same thing online.

Time's Lead Over Newsweek Narrows
By Louis Hau
August 13, 2007
http://www.forbes.com/business/2007/08/13/magazines-audit-circ-biz-cx_lh_0813mags.html

Time magazine remains the nation's largest newsweekly, but its lead over archrival Newsweek has narrowed considerably, according to circulation figures released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Time's total paid and verified weekly circulation during the six months ended June 30 stood at 3.4 million, down 17.1% from 4.1 million during the same period last year following a reduction in January in the magazine's rate base. Newsweek's circulation stood at 3.1 million, virtually unchanged from a year earlier.

Time spokeswoman Betsy Burton said the decline in circulation was in line with the magazine's expectations after it slashed its rate base--the average circulation level it guarantees advertisers--from 4 million to 3.25 million. The move was part of Time's plans to shift its ad sales efforts to audience measurements, as opposed to strict circulation measurements. The magazine has said the former will provide advertisers with more transparency and accuracy.

Quadrangle Is Set To Stuff It
By Keith J. Kelly
August 14, 2007
http://www.nypost.com/seven/08142007/business/quadrangle_is_set_to_stuff_it_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

Quadrangle Group is expected to complete its $245 million takeover of the American portion of Dennis Publishing today and plans to immediately fold struggling magazine Stuff.

"The Stuff staff is sitting around waiting for the ax to fall," said one insider.

Once Quadrangle's Steve Rattner, Peter Ezersky and their new partner and CEO Kent Brownridge take the reins, the publishing company's name will change to Alpha Media Group, and include magazines Maxim and Blender.

Lipman's Lament
By Keith J. Kelly
August 14, 2007
http://www.nypost.com/seven/08142007/business/lipmans_lament_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

Portfolio's second issue hits newsstands later this week, with improved tempo and pacing, but with new unrest now surfacing on Joanne Lipman's editorial staff.

The cover—cars on an assembly line—looks uninspired and suitable for an auto trade mag. It just shows the problems of a magazine aimed at white men in suits.

That said, the profile by Daniel Roth about Cerberus Capital Management, and its secretive CEO Stephen Feinberg and the bid to remake Chrysler is highly insightful. Feinberg shuns publicity and avoids Roth, who does get the secretive billionaire's daughter to talk on the record.

Torrey's vision brings a fresh look to 'New York'
By Hamilton Nolan
August 13, 2007
http://www.prweek.com/us/news/open/free/blogs/731258

New York Magazine is considered an amusing, well-polished, and somewhat genteel journal that embodies the interests of a certain set of leisurely professionals.

It's not seen by most as a battleground of any sort. But that didn't stop it from hiring a communications director who honed her craft in the trenches of Democratic political campaigns, rather than the morning show-wooing confines of a typical glossy.

Serena Torrey, who recalls skipping school to attend Bill Clinton's first inauguration, spent six years in the political game after parlaying a White House internship into a position with Charles Schumer's (D-NY) successful Senate campaign. She went on to hold communications roles for Democratic heavyweights like Hillary Clinton, Bill Bradley, and New York Congressman Anthony Weiner.

WEEKLY READER: News travels fast, and according to the first-half figures reported by Audit Bureau of Circulations, it seems both newsweeklies and celebrity weeklies are having trouble keeping up with the flow of information. While six-month reports in the past few years have showed skyrocketing growth for the celebrity category, the more mature titles have slowed, posting soft newsstand results for the first six months of 2007. Of those titles, People reported a 5.6 percent decline in single-copy sales, to 1.4 million, while overall circ fell 2.2 percent to 3.7 million. Its first half of 2007 compares with the year-ago period where it banked 2.3 million single copies in one week thanks to exclusive photos of Shiloh Jolie-Pitt. Us Weekly reported a 3.4 percent decline in single-copy sales, to 971,756, but a 4.8 percent growth in total circulation, to 1.8 million. And Star, which missed its 1.5 million rate base for the period by about 40,000 copies, reported a 3.5 percent dip in single-copy sales, to 726,037.

NOT IN VOGUE: Men's Vogue has lost two top members of its visual team: creative director Russell Labosky and photo editor Mark Jacobson. A spokeswoman for the magazine said the two had left "to pursue other interests," and that the magazine was interviewing successors.

SMOKE 'EM IF YOU'VE GOT 'EM: A few months ago, 41 members of Congress sent out a plea, in letter form, asking certain women's magazines to stop accepting "misleading advertising for deadly cigarettes" and, more specifically, to stop running the Camel No. 9 ad from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. The letter claimed the hot pink ad was developed to encourage young women to smoke. Apparently, among Cosmopolitan, Elle, Glamour, In Style, Vogue, W, Lucky and Marie Claire, the only response Congress garnered was a phone call from Glamour's editor in chief, Cindi Leive, followed by a letter.

SECOND COMING: After four months of gestation—and media critics sharpening their knives—Cond? Nast Portfolio will drop its September edition on newsstands Wednesday with profiles on both blue-blooded and well-tailored industries. The business magazine's cover story will focus on Cerberus Capital, the investment group that took over car manufacturer Chrysler Group. And, as a fashionable counterbalance, Portfolio also has a 10-page feature on Fran?ois-Henri Pinault, head of PPR, owner of Gucci Group and recent acquirer of active brand Puma. The story, written by Nancy Hass, outlines PPR's business strategy, which includes emphasizing its brands instead of the designers who create them, but also details the relationship and passing of the torch between Pinault and his father, Fran?ois, and the challenges at PPR divisions Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, where, Hass writes, "Pinault will not name a year, much less a quarter," that the YSL division will turn a profit. But those scouring the magazine more for gossip than news will be disappointed: Not much is revealed about the relationship between the young Pinault and his pregnant fianc?e, Salma Hayek, who is only mentioned briefly.

DOT (NEW)COMER: Glamour's Web site has hired new editor Anne Sachs from ellegirl.com, where she was executive editor. Sachs will help manage the growing site, which this summer has been adding blogs by the minute. The latest include "Storked," penned by a pregnant 26-year-old and soon-to-be single mother. On Friday, blogger Perez Hilton began contributing "Pereztastic"—a weekly guest blog providing his trademark snarky commentary on celebrity fashion, though a quick perusal of his glamour.com content turned up more tame blog entries than the harshly critical opinions he often shares on Perezhilton.com. This fall, glamour.com also will roll out a political blog featuring commentaries on the presidential campaigns.

A MOSS IN THE GARDEN: On his upcoming guest editorship of House & Garden, Murray Mos —who The New York Times recently described as being "widely acknowledged to be the king of high-design retailing in this country"—is already trying his hand at magazine-ready metaphors. "I thought, it's like acting," he said. "You get to play the part of editor in chief of a magazine, but there's a beginning, a middle and an end." And then again: "I needed to curate it, because that's what I do. I needed it to be an exhibition. Everything in the room relates. I needed to be a through-line, so that everything in the book makes sense, like a novel. I wanted to have my say on a subject that's actually a complete narrative."
