David Kahn Goes From Publisher To Fix-It-Upper
By Staff
8/15/07
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

Headline is a stretch, but it reflects the former Worth/Saveur/The New Yorker/Latina/Country Home publisher's new gig. Last month, Kahn was named New York-based vp/media solutions of eight-year-old SERVICEMAGIC.COM, the Barry Diller-led Interactive Corp.-owned portal that helps users find the best local contractors on everything "home": from fixing a leaky pipe (maybe $100) to building an addition (maybe $100,000--or more). "Listed contractors [more than 50,000 nationwide] are prescreened and come with recommendations from users," he says. "It is a far smoother process than using the Yellow Pages, and it shows by our getting more than 3 million unique visitors per month."

Since its 1999 launch, the sole SERVICEMAGIC.COM revenue stream has been the contractors' listings, which are paid. Kahn's job is to bring in national advertising to the site and in planned regional digest-sized guides that he hopes to make available at hardware chains (Ace Hardware/Home Depot/Lowe's/TrueValue, etc.) and the mom-and-pops. "We are working with them because they are where contractors buy supplies," he says. Kahn's sales-call venues include ABC Carpet/Armstrong/American Standard/Kohler/Sherwin-Williams, etc. "For now, I am a sales staff of one, but that will change."

Kahn left Country Home in July 2005 to start his Kahn Ventures consultantcy, with Time Out New York founding editor (1996) Cyndi Stivers' environmentally targeted BLUEEGG.COM a client. At SERVICEMAGIC.COM, he works at the recently opened Frank Gehry-designed office building at 555 West 18th (adjacent to the West Side Highway), which is a satellite to the company's Golden, Colo., headquarters.

Lipman’s Legions Leery in Portfolio’s Second Sortie
By Michael Calderone
8/15/07
http://www.observer.com/2007/lipman-s-legions-leery-portfolio-s-second-sortie

When Portfolio editor in chief Joanne Lipman fired deputy Jim Impoco on the morning of August 7, a week before the magazine’s long-awaited second issue hit newsstands, the conversation about the fledgling Cond? Nast business magazine shifted once again from its contents—were they really gonna say that about George Steinbrenner?—to the perception that chaos is reigning in the magazine’s 4 Times Square offices.

And inside those offices, Ms. Lipman is taking a lot of the blame. “The second issue—and whole magazine—would be much smarter and more successful if Mr. Impoco was in charge,” said one Portfolio staffer. “Instead of being fired, he should have been named editor in chief.”

This issue is an improvement over the last one, from a reader’s point of view if not from that of Si Newhouse, who collected 63 pages less in ad revenue from issue No. 2.

ELLE Offices Evacuated Because of Fire
By Staff

http://www.nysun.com/article/60537

The corporate offices of Hachette Filipacchi Media, the owner of ELLE magazine, in Midtown Manhattan were evacuated this afternoon after a fire broke out in an elevator.

Fire department officials said the fire was caused by rubbish in a freight elevator on the 45th Floor of the Paramount Plaza building at 1633 Broadway. The fire started at about 1:52 p.m. and was under control in about an hour.

Three floors of the building were evacuated, according to a spokeswoman for Hachette Filipacchi, including the company's corporate offices on the 45th floor and the offices of ELLE magazine, which are located on the 44th Floor.

James Wood: ‘I Won’t Go Soft’ at The New Yorker
By Leon Neyfakh
8/14/07
http://www.observer.com/2007/james-wood-i-won-t-go-soft-new-yorker

James Wood has had a standing offer to join the staff of The New Yorker for about as long as people have been calling him the best literary critic in the world.

Until recently, Mr. Wood did not want to go. He had contributed to the magazine a handful of times since moving to the United States from Great Britain in 1995, but the vast majority of his writing from that period went to The New Republic, where he had been serving under the magazine’s famously combustible literary editor Leon Wieseltier

Two weeks ago, Mr. Wood informed Mr. Wieseltier that New Yorker editor David Remnick had made a new offer, and that he had decided to accept. The deal was already done, and Mr. Wieseltier and Mr. Wood have not spoken since.

Lipman Buys Time
By Keith J. Kelly

http://www.nypost.com/seven/08152007/business/lipman_buys_time_business_keith_j__kelly.htm

THE October issue of Cond? Nast Portfolio is already closing and it looks like it will rack up a nice, healthy 121 ad pages for its third issue.

hat's only one ad page down from the magazine's September issue, which went on sale today with 122 ad pages - the third-best ad-page tally for a second issue in magazine publishing history, behind O, The Oprah Magazine and the late John F. Kennedy Jr.'s now-defunct George magazine, which racked up 125 ad pages in its second outing.

Portfolio's debut issue was 185 ad pages. "Those are astonishingly good numbers," insisted Portfolio President and Group Publisher David Carey.

The MagaBlogger is happy to announce that famed journalist and anchor Dan Rather will moderate the AMC panel "Handicapping the 2008 Presidential Election" on October 29. He was the White House correspondent during the Johnson and Nixon administrations. He's interviewed every U.S. President from Dwight Eisenhower to George W. Bush.

Rather spent the bulk of his career at CBS News. He's now anchor and managing editor of DAN RATHER REPORTS, which began broadcasting on HDNET in November, 2006. Tonight's show: The Failure of Touch Screen Voting Machines.

The AMC panel Rather leads includes TIME Magazine political analyst Mark Halperin and The Nation's editor and publisher Katrina vander Heuvel. We're in the hunt for a third panelist and we should announce shortly

Back and Forth & Since You’ve Been Gone
By Amy Wicks & Stephanie D. Smith

Who's been tapping whose phones? The latest issues of Fortune and newest rival Cond? Nast Portfolio strangely have a few things in common — starting with their cover stories. Both magazines have lengthy pieces on the inner workings of Cerberus Capital Management and its purchase of Chrysler Group, which perhaps isn't that much of a surprise. But one Portfolio staffer claimed Fortune found out about the piece on Cerberus for Portfolio's second issue, so Fortune followed its lead. A Time Inc. spokeswoman denied the claim, adding Fortune's Cerberus piece was in the works "for a very long time." For what it's worth, in his "Captain's Blog," posted on July 30, Andy Serwer, managing editor at Fortune, loosely commented on stories he'd like to see written, saying, "Or how about a story on Cerberus?!?!?..."

Well, Serwer better step it up a bit. Even though Fortune has twice the frequency of Portfolio, only the Cond? Nast monthly's Cerberus story manages to get in the Aug. 5 appointment of Robert Nardelli as chief executive officer of Chrysler. Fortune's article has no mention of Nardelli, even though the Time Inc. title extensively covered the controversial executive when he was ceo of Home Depot.

INCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE: Where in the world is James Truman? The former Cond? Nast editorial director has been laying low since departing Louise McBain's LTB Media, just after the launch of Culture & Travel. But Elle has the scoop on his whereabouts through contributor Leanne Shapton's monthly Jet Setter column. Shapton, an illustrator and author who coincidentally is Truman's girlfriend, writes up her picks for shopping, hotels, restaurants and activities in far-off destinations, including Morocco, Ireland and Turkey. And Truman has apparently been tagging along for the ride. Writes Shapton of her latest trip to Mallorca, Spain: "From Es Blau, our serene villa on Orient Express's La Residencia estate my BF and I motored to nearby Soller for El Mercado Municipal fresh fish, and bread at Patisserie Marroig." Shapton also chronicles the pair's recreational pursuits: "My boyfriend channeled local hero Rafael Nadal on La Residencia's tennis courts..." and even includes details on activities that required less, uh, equipment. "At sunrise, post siesta and at dust, we skinny dipped in a tiny cove just steps from our villa, often joined by other naked nut-brown bathers." Sadly, Shapton did not include pictures of their exploits.
