******* Stuff, one of the biggest of the “lad” magazines that took off in the 1990s, is being stuffed into its bigger sibling, Maxim, the publications’ new owners announced yesterday. Alpha Media Group, which is owned primarily by the venture group Quadrangle Capital Partners, will turn Stuff into a section of Maxim, while keeping stuff.com as a stand-alone Web site. The October issue will be Stuff’s last. Stuff was created in 1998 and quickly built a following among young men with money to spend and a taste for the latest gadgetry. Using a formula pioneered by some British magazines, Stuff projected an irreverent, entitled tone, although it relied a little less on sex and more on consumerism than some of its peers. Stuff has a circulation of more than 1.3 million, but its ad sales — $64 million last year, according to the Publisher's Information Bureau— have been less impressive. In recent years, Maxim sold roughly twice as many copies, and had about three times the ad revenue. Quadrangle Capital Partners, a venture of the investment firm Quadrangle Group, also said yesterday that it had closed its deal for the American arm of Dennis Publishing, acquiring Maxim, Stuff and Blender, a music magazine. An investor in the deal is Kent Brownridge, a veteran of Wenner Media, who will serve as chief executive of the new Alpha Media Group.

Look for celebrity magazines to start costing a bit more right after Labor Day. People, the nation's leading celebrity chronicler, is boosting its cover price by 50 cents to $3.99 effective with the Sept. 10 issue. The magazine has been testing the new price over the past few months and feels that any sales fall-off will be minor. "We're a premium product and we don't think it will have any impact," said Managing Editor Larry Hackett. The move comes at a time when the magazine's total paid and verified circulation is 3.7 million. Star magazine, meanwhile, is not so fortunate. As previously reported by Women's Wear Daily - and confirmed by the release Monday of the Audit Bureau of Circulation's first-half numbers - the magazine has indeed missed its rate base in the first half of the year. The rate base is the number of copies the magazines promises advertisers it will deliver. That would seem to some to suggest that the company's move to remove Editorial Director Bonnie Fuller from day-to-day control of Star in favor of installing Candice Trunzo has been something of a flop. The magazine had told advertisers as far back as February that it was lowering the amount of circulation it can deliver. As of July 1, the new rate base had plunged to 1.35 million from 1.5 million. However, American Media President John Miller said the shortfall is "miniscule. It's not a big problem. It's 2.5 percent." MORE ONLINE

THE October issue of Cond? Nast Portfolio is already closing and it looks like it will rack up a nice, healthy 121 ad pages for its third issue. That's only one ad page down from the magazine's September issue, which went on sale today with 122 ad pages - the third-best ad-page tally for a second issue in magazine publishing history, behind O, The Oprah Magazine and the late John F. Kennedy Jr.'s now-defunct George magazine, which racked up 125 ad pages in its second outing. Portfolio's debut issue was 185 ad pages. "Those are astonishingly good numbers," insisted Portfolio President and Group Publisher David Carey. In a category that is slumping in general, the strong ad-page showing could end up buying Editor-in-Chief Joanne Lipman enough time to polish off her rough edges. But there will undoubtedly be fallout, especially in the wake of Deputy Editor Jim Impoco being forced out last week. Impoco was not without his detractors - beyond obviously Lipman who axed him. Some felt he liked stirring things up. He was also said to be miffed when Lipman took away front-of-the-book responsibilities from him and gave them to Amy Stevens, the other deputy editor and a Lipman ally who followed her boss from The Wall Street Journal. He also was away on a week's vacation as the second issue was closing - which on a start-up is problematic. MORE ONLINE

Ziff Davis Media has finally hit the wall. The embattled tech media company - which has teetered on the brink for over a year as it tried to sell itself in pieces to get out from under a mountain of debt - said it skipped an interest payment due yesterday and was entering into negotiations with debt holders to restructure about $390 million in debt. "Operationally, we're in very good shape, but we still have debt that was put on the company when it was a very different scale," said newly installed CEO Josh Young, who earlier this month took over from Robert Callahan, who remains chairman. "It's about correcting a capital-debt structure," said Young, who added that he could not speculate on what terms would be offered to debt holders. Said one industry observer yesterday, "They are playing hardball with their lenders by withholding payments. It was inevitable. They were in a cash crunch and it was just a matter of time." The company said it has retained Alvarez & Marsal to handle the restructuring. Alvarez & Marsal have done work in the past for companies such as Timex, DoubleClick and Levi Strauss. MORE ONLINE

The publishing company Hearst is gobbling up property south of Columbus Circle with all the gluttonous verve of a real estate tycoon. In another blockbuster deal, the Hearst Corporation has purchased the commercial portion of The Sheffield, a 41-story residential tower next door to its headquarters, for $95 million. The deal will close this week, said Kent Swig, the owner of The Sheffield at 322 West 57th Street. Hearst will become the landlord of 109,000 square feet of office space, a spokeswoman for Hearst confirmed. The Sheffield is literally next-door to Hearst’s new 46-story skyscraper, giving the impression that the publisher is on the brink of creating a Columbus Circle-area campus for its national publications, such as Esquire, O, Cosmopolitan and Harper’s Bazaar. The buy is just the latest real estate deal in midtown for Hearst. Last year, it opened a $500 million skyscraper above its historic headquarters on Eighth Avenue; earlier this year, it sold a $160 million development site to Mort Zuckerman; in the past three months, as The Observer reported last week, it has purchased $29 million worth of midtown apartment buildings around the corner from its tower. Bill Clinton just snagged the cover of Conde Nast Traveler's September issue. Apart from his work on Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2008 campaign and his public speaking work, Clinton has been active in outreach/publicity work for NGOs. The magazine's angle for their cover piece is the ex-President's work with the Clinton Global Initiative There's an extensive interview with Clinton about his views on American foreign policy and the third world (and strangely little about Hillary's campaign), but we were happy to see that he's adjusting to New York just fine.
