Editor Acts, and 10 Time Inc. Magazines Revisit Katrina
By Brian Stelter
August 20, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/20/business/media/20time.html?ref=media

Coincidence or not? This month, 10 of Time Inc.’s magazines are running articles about New Orleans.

The answer, for the most part, is “not.” The assorted articles were the result of the editor in chief John Huey’s unusual decision to take 12 editors on a two-day tour in May of the struggling city. Mr. Huey, who oversees the content of more than 150 magazines, said he could not recall a similar trip in the past, nor could others who were involved.

Mr. Huey said he did not presume that each editor would come back and assign articles about New Orleans, but once they did, the timing was coordinated ahead of next week’s two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall.

He is Really Doctor Evil

Kent Brownridge, the new CEO of Alpha Media Group, looked like he was about to shed the moniker given to him during the years he served as the henchman of the unpredictable Jann Wenner, founder of Rolling Stone.

After finally taking over the old Dennis Publishing, Brownridge immediately moved to shut down Stuff magazine but looked like he'd spare at least half the staff, including its editor and publisher, from the axe.

As Media Ink was going to press late Thursday, Stuff publisher John Lumpkin was still with the new company, as was the Editor-In-Chief Dan Bova - even though they no longer had a magazine. "Stuff for Men" will live on as a section only on the pages of Maxim.

Modesty Panic Grips Hearst Tower
By Janelle Nanos
From the August 27, 2007 issue
http://nymag.com/news/intelligencer/36108/

The cascading glass escalators in the lobby of Norman Foster’s new Hearst Tower, which carry the ladies of Cosmopolitan, Town & Country, and Harper’s Bazaar to their offices also offer a view up their skirts. Some editors were concerned enough that they warned members of their staff prone to wearing trendy mini-minidresses of ballooning short skirts to take care to keep their legs close. “It’s the visitors that see the ‘view,’” said on editor. “A lot of tourists walk in from the streets to see the building.” Other employees were more blas?. Says Marie Claire editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, “I know we’ve got some great views from Hearst Tower, but I was not aware of the one from the bottom of the escalators. We’ll have to add that to our docent notes. As for me, I don’t wear minis.” Besides, noted another editor, “I’m not sure it’s that much of a problem considering the fact that I can probably count the number of straight men who work in the building on one hand.”
