******* With Portfolio now shifting to a monthly schedule, will Elizabeth Spiers keep churning out takedowns after each issue? In April, Ms. Spiers reviewed Portfolio’s first issue on DealBreaker, a Wall Street gossip Web site that she founded, and has since left. There, Ms. Spiers began her brutal piece by christening Cond? Nast’s business start-up “the Paris Hilton of business magazines.” MORE ONLINE

Pushing ahead with its comparatively aggressive digital strategy, Hearst this week announced a pair of mobile site launches—m.bazaar.com (Harper’s Bazaar) and m.marieclaire.com (Marie Claire)—bringing the current number of sites within Hearst’s existing mobile portfolio to nine. (Cosmo, CosmoGirl, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, House Beautiful, Seventeen and Redbook have all been given the “m.” treatment.) According to a Hearst rep, there are “no other mobile sites on the horizon.” Hearst has agreements in place with most “Tier 1” U.S. carriers, including AT&T/Cingular, Sprint and Verizon, according to company reps. Both sites will immediately generate revenue for Hearst, the company says, initially through the sale of wallpaper images. “Through research we found that 25 percent of our readers now have mobile Web-enabled cell phones but have not yet found what they are looking for,” says Chuck Cordray, vice president and general manager of Hearst Digital. “Much like the Internet was 10 years ago, today is a brand new world for all of us on the mobile front, and it’s one with clear potential, if the content and delivery are right.” MORE ONLINE

Next week, New York magazine will move from its current (and often confusing) multi-floored Midtown Manhattan offices to a single-floor, 72,000-square-foot space at 75 Varick Street in Lower Manhattan. As part of the move—slated for August 27—its parent company is changing its name to New York Media, the company announced today The name change also represents an acknowledgement "that the company’s core product, New York magazine, is being joined by an increasing number of products and platforms," including nymag.com, New York Look Book: A Gallery of Street Fashion (hitting stores in September) and New York Look, slated for launch in November. New York magazine was founded in 1968 and will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year; the Web site will simultaneously celebrate its 10th. MORE ONLINE

In the opinion of Tyler Br?l?, the ever-stylish Wallpaper* founder, the suits are looking at today’s media landscape completely backwards. These days, he said, news executives and big-time publishers are foolishly closing foreign bureaus, cutting trim size, reducing paper stock, overdoing local news and swapping editorial authority for user-generated content. “We’re not in the business of trying to build a galaxy of bloggers and churn out copy all day,” said Mr. Br?l?, who earlier this year launched Monocle, a high-end newsmagazine. Few women were the subject of cover stories in the major news and business magazines in 2006, based on my first annual "Women and Major Magazines Cover Stories Monitor." As a journalist and media monitor, I had noticed the deficit of women as magazines cover stories subjects. But I decided to seriously analyze the publications, following a visit with my five-year-old nephew, to a news store. He immediately identified magazines and videos for "boys" or "girls," based solely on the cover photo or image. This reminded me of the little boys in Iceland who asked, "Can a boy grow up to be president?" Vigdis Finnbogadottir served as the first woman president in Iceland, from 1980 to 1996. Consequently, these boys had never seen a male president. MORE ONLINE

Star has solidified its decision to lower its rate base to 1.25 million in January, after the company lowered its rate base to 1.35 million from 1.5 million as of July. WWD reported last month that parent company American Media Inc. was considering the move, and AMI confirmed the decision Monday. The move, according to David Leckey, AMI executive vice president, consumer marketing, and John Miller, AMI chief operating officer, comes as Star continues to clean out less profitable subscriptions from its files. Subscriptions, said Leckey, are settling toward their natural home of around 500,000, while single-copy sales have fallen to 750,000, from 900,000 three years ago. But don't blame new Star editor in chief Candace Trunzo for the drop in single-copy sales — competition from lower-priced titles In Touch, Life & Style and OK! have eaten into some of Star's newsstand share. And it's not the only celebrity title being challenged by cheaper competitors — veteran weeklies People and Us Weekly saw softness in their newsstand figures for the first half of 2007. NO LONGER JUST NEW YORK: A hip, downtown address means a grander name for New York and its parent company. The magazine is moving on Monday from its headquarters at 444 Madison Avenue to 75 Varick Street and at the same time will add "Media" to its corporate moniker. No, it isn't to differentiate itself from the city or state; instead, the loftier name reflects the reach of the city magazine into spin-offs including New York Weddings, nymag.com and its new fashion semiannual, New York Look. Still no word on whether the huge New York red neon sign above their old digs will be moving downtown as well — although without the "Media," does it really matter? MORE ONLINE
************ Ed Ad Two female mid-twenties media types have one unfurnished bedroom in a 3BR Hell's Kitchen apartment available for one year starting on September 1. The apartment has a lot of character, a very large kitchen and nice sized living room and bathroom, and is on the third floor in a pre-war walk-up complete with exposed brick. The bedroom for rent has one brick wall and two large windows. The girl currently living there has a full-sized bed, desk and chair, bookcase and bedside table. We are located in the heart of Hell's Kitchen within a couple blocks of multiple subway lines and right near Times Square, Central Park and a million bars and restaurants. Plus, if you work in one of the major pub companies, this location is ideal: we're two blocks and an avenue from the Hearst building and close to Time Inc., Conde Nast, Meredith, etc. Rent is $1067 a month, and first month, last month and security deposit ($1067x3) will be due to the landlord upon signing the lease. Wireless Internet and cable is $44/person each month, and utilities usually run about $35-60 each depending on the time of year. ***You will also be required to be the guarantor for your share of the apartment, so if you don't make three times your annual rent (roughly $36,000), you need to have a parent or guardian who will sign for you.
