Paris Sans Wintour
By Marc Karimzadeh
8/23/07
http://www.wwd.com/memopad/article/118250

There will be an extra front-row seat at the Paris collections in October: Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour plans to skip the City of Light. The reason? In addition to Milan, she's attending London Fashion Week, which she last visited in February 2006. Wintour will already be in her native city to speak at Isabella Blow's memorial service and give a presentation for the British Society of Magazine Editors. "Unfortunately, she is not able to attend London, Milan, and Paris as well," said a Vogue spokesman. "She needs to return to New York for the magazine."

That said, Wintour will make a pit stop in Paris on her way back home to preview the collections. Vogue is expected to be represented in Paris with the usual crew, which includes creative director Grace Coddington, fashion director Tonne Goodman, fashion news-features director Sally Singer, fashion market-accessories director Virginia Smith, European editor at large Hamish Bowles and editor at large Andr? Leon Talley.

Those French designers who fret over a Wintour-less front row can, of course, extend an invite to model Snejana Onopka, who was a dead-ringer for the editor in the August issue of Paris Vogue.

Martha Space and What a Gem

MARTHA SPACE

Speaking of MySpace, it's not enough for Martha Stewart to have a presence in print, television, the Internet, home building, home goods and, come next year, your local Costco via frozen dinners. She, like most publicity-hungry magazine editors, had to take hold of MySpace as well. The multiplatform domestic grande dame launched her official MySpace page at the end of July, complete with video from her daytime talk show, "Martha," pictures of her pets and her old modeling photos. Some of those images show Stewart in swimwear, causing one "friend" to comment "Wow! Risque! Hot!"

Stewart also finds time to post regular entries to her MySpace blog, which she has updated from her vacation in France with Kevin Sharkey, decorating editorial director of Martha Stewart Living. According to the posts, she still finds time for offline reading in between online networking. "Kevin and I left NYC via Kennedy for Nice," Stewart wrote in a blog post from Aug. 15. "Between us, Kevin and I had about 15 different magazines and several newspapers, and I vowed I would get through all of them before lapsing off into a fitful three-hour nap before reaching our destination." Her stack included House & Garden, Vanity Fair ? for its "profile of Ralph Lauren and a great story about the Herm?s family," Elle Decor ? "delicious p?te recipe by Daniel Boulud," and W ? "some fall clothing and accessory inspiration from Michael Kors and Calvin Klein."

WHAT A GEM

Interview magazine sure is a big supporter of Van Cleef & Arpels these days. Not only are editor in chief Ingrid Sischy, publisher Sandra Brant and fashion director Annabel Tollman on the host committee for the Parisian jeweler's upcoming "Une journ?e ? Paris" party at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York Sept. 4, but Tollman will style a runway show during the event. Tollman stresses it is strictly a freelance gig, but added helpfully that she often uses pieces from Van Cleef & Arpels for editorial in the magazine. It is expected to be the jeweler's largest event ever in the U.S. Prosper Assouline, Alber Elbaz, Lee Radziwill, Anne McNally, Irina Lazareanu, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Muffie Potter Aston, who formerly served as head of p.r. for the jewelry company, are also on the party's host committee.

VF Screen Spoof Star Wigs Out
By Richard Johnson

JEFF Bridges is wearing a complexly coiffed wig to play a character modeled on Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter in the movie version of "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People."

But the book's British author, Toby Young - who worked at Vanity Fair for a few years and was once likened by Carter to "a piece of gum that stuck to my shoe . . . that I still can't get off" - says Bridges is not wearing "a fat suit."

Young himself is played by "Hot Fuzz" star Simon Pegg in the comic tale of a young Brit trying to fit in at the magazine and Manhattan's self-important social scene. Filming wrapped this week with scenes shot at Arena nightclub with Kirsten Dunst and "Transformers" hottie Megan Fox. Having moved back to London, gotten married and fathered three kids, Young claims he wants to make up with Carter, but has been rebuffed.
