Cathy Horyn on September Vogue
By Ron M
8/28/07
http://mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/

New York Times fashion scribe Cathy Horyn's Runway blog reviewing the record-breaking September issue of Vogue drew 109 passionate comments (and counting). Among the subjects covered in the post are luxury, the profusion of ads, the general disappointment regarding the cover girl (Sienna Miller, photographed by Mario Testino), Anna Wintour, and—among other things—the evolution of the magazine industry. From WWD's Memopad:

''The New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn's mid-August review on her blog of the September Vogue was full of unenthused praise ('great,' 'informative and fun') followed by a criticism that the issue lacked 'the offbeat and young....The looks shown in the issue convey a sense of authority and judgment, but the labels have a duty roster feel.' ''But that was nothing compared to the thousands of words of heated comments by readers that followed, many excoriating the magazine for being stale, out of touch, racist and elitist.''

According to the general tenor of the comments, Anna Wintour—whose taste is generally unassailable—profoundly misjudged the appeal of Sienna Miller to Vogue readers.

Will Martha Stewart Target Boomer Women?
By Ron M
8/27/07
http://mediabistro.com/fishbowlny

Earlier this month WWD reported that Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia's Chief Creative Officer Gael Towey was in the early stages of producing a test issue for a magazine aimed at older women. When asked about the plan by Jennifer Tuesday of Hamptons.com, Martha Stewart gave a ''sly little smile,'' and ''didn't deny the project.'' WWD's scoop mentioned that the test issue might be positioned to compete against a luxe mag, like Hearst's Town and Country. The other possibility mentioned was a scenario in which MSLO might go after the circulation growth—and upside potential—of Meredith Corp.'s More.

Nat Ives of Ad Age observes: ''So if Ms. Stewart's savvy, overachieving company decides it can tap this business—boomers were 78.2 million strong in 2005, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and some estimates peg their spending at up to $2 trillion—it's safe to assume we may be in for some new topography on the media landscape. Not that the going is steady or easy. For a long time, it was pretty much stalled. '''There was no place to go but up,' said Patty Bloomfield, VP-account director at Boombiz, a year-and-a-half-old unit of the Northlich branding and advertising agency in Cincinnati.''

Ad revenue in MSLO's publishing segment increased 23 percent in the second quarter of 2007.

Memo Pad: Open Season

The great democratization of criticism promised by the Internet is in full swing, even on blogs run by major media organizations. The New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn's mid-August review on her blog of the September Vogue was full of unenthused praise ("great," "informative and fun") followed by a criticism that the issue lacked "the offbeat and young....The looks shown in the issue convey a sense of authority and judgment, but the labels have a duty roster feel."

But that was nothing compared to the thousands of words of heated comments by readers that followed, many excoriating the magazine for being stale, out of touch, racist and elitist. "Cathy, why are you even reviewing [Vogue]?" wondered one reader. "Perhaps they should be reviewing you?" But another confessed that despite its misgivings, "I read it faithfully.... Vogue is Vogue. You know, if God let some typos into the Bible, you wouldn't stop reading it just cuz, would you?"

In a follow-up post last week that responded to some of her online buddies, Horyn delivered a rather backhanded compliment: "If I admire Anna Wintour for one thing, it is that she runs Vogue as she sees fi t."

Memo Pad: One More Title
By Amy Wicks

Hearst Magazines International continues its overseas march, with a new edition of Town & Country debuting in September in the Philippines. In partnership with Summit Media—which also publishes Hearst titles Cosmopolitan, Seventeen and Good Housekeeping in the Asian country—Town & Country Philippines will include a mix of content from the original edition as well as local stories and will be headed up by editor Monique Villonco and Mia Borromeo, editor at large. George Green, president and chief executive offi cer of Hearst Magazines International, said, curiously, that in selecting new international editions, "the partner is often more important than the magazine." On that note, he added Town & Country was cobranded with Seven Seas Magazine in Japan, starting with the August issue. The magazine will not have "Town & Country" on the cover, but content will be included inside. "It's an unusual extension of an existing magazine," Green said. "But it's very high quality."

All fired up over America’s OK!
By Dominic Rushe

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article2326874.ece

With her Union Jack wellies drying by the side of her desk, Sarah Ivens pads round her Manhattan office in her bare feet. “I shouldn’t really, we have all sorts in here. Fleas, cockroaches,” said the 32-year-old British-born editor of the American edition of OK! magazine.

Ivens has been in the US for nearly three years but it’s obvious her heart still lies over the water. On her desk, next to a handwritten sign that reads The Boss, Ivens has a stack of books, including Ian McEwan’s On Chesil Beach and The Blair Years: The Alastair Campbell Diaries. Her tote bag reads “John, Paul, Ringo & George”.

“At first when I went back home my Mum used to cry when I left. Now I cry,” she said. Not that Ivens has much to cry about. After a troubled start, the US version of OK! is flying high. In a crowded, celebrity-obsessed magazine market OK! has grown 54.3% in the past year, according to the Media Industry News-letter (Min), and is selling more than 850,000 copies a week.

PC Magazine extends brand with new sites
By Lauren Bell

The PC Magazine Network launched three new online offerings last week. GoodCleanTech, Security Watch and mobile.pcmag.com joined an online stable that already included the AppScout, Gearlog and PCMag.com Web sites.

Mobile.pcmag.com, developed in partnership with mDog, is the first mobile site offered by the tech-heavy network. It is a cell-phone ready incarnation of PCMag.com—the main page of the network.

“A lot of our readers want to find our [product] reviews while they’re on the show floors,” said Robyn Peterson, VP of product management and CTO for the PC Magazine Network . “They’re looking for a laptop, and they want to know what our laptop expert thinks of the latest laptop. They can go to the mobile site, type in model name, search our reviews and read them from their phone there in the store.”

Web Geeking Gets a Whole Lot Prettier
By Marisa Peacock

Is it possible to be both pretty and geeky? Increasingly so. The September issue of Vogue Magazine—the most anticipated issue of the year for fashionistas—will be a behemoth ad spectacle as usual. This year, however, ads will send customers online to check out a new feature: ShopVogue.tv.

The new channel “offers links to purchase the products featured in the magazine’s print ads, while simultaneously showing videos of runway shows, fashion ad campaigns and serial shows created by Vogue.” It will also provide a venue for user-generated interaction, in which visitors can upload photos of their own styles into an area called Fashion U Share.

Owned by Cond? Nast Publications, which, like all major traditional magazine brands, is now fretting over its previously acclaimed female readership, Vogue is increasingly under pressure to embrace an untapped online audience.
