******* Bon App?tit turned 50 last year, just in time to come under the knife — but only a little. Last spring, Matthew Lenning was installed as the magazine's first design director. "He's a prot?g? of Fred Woodward, the design director of GQ," said Bon App?tit editor in chief Barbara Fairchild. "As far as I'm concerned, you can't get better than that." Since appearing on the masthead in July, Lenning already has made a few tweaks to the magazine's typeface and made things, in Fairchild's words, "easier to read." More changes are expected, but magazine editors — and their publicists — dislike the word redesign, with its implications of a broken machine. To wit: "There's nothing that we're worried about or need to fix. I just thought it was time to add this position and have the magazine have a freshening." And again: "We're going to be just doing things that are very much of the DNA of Bon App?tit, and shouldn't really raise too many eyebrows." In the first half of this year, Bon App?tit's newsstand sales were down 12.3 percent, though total circulation was flat and ad pages were up 6.1 percent.

It isn't only business newspapers eager to tap into the fashion mother lode. Take the shelter category, where some magazines are now proclaiming themselves style or design titles rather than the more limiting "shelter" moniker. Still others have made the full-court press on fashion advertisers by publishing special "fashion" issues. The strategy has in part helped Elle Decor, which publishes an annual October Glamour issue, grow its ad pages 22 percent through June, to 462 pages. This year's issue, on newsstands Sept. 14, features the homes of Milly's Michelle Smith, who said she knew her Madison Avenue apartment was perfect "when I realized the Christian Louboutin shop was right across the street"; Gilles Mendel; Valentino's Charlene de Ganay; Josie Natori, and Carlos Miele, whose sleek downtown spread was shot by Elle's Gilles Bensimon. The fashionable subjects were accompanied by ads from new advertisers including Est?e Lauder, Prada, Tod's, Bottega Veneta, Cole Haan, Dior and Etro. The October issue is Elle Decor's second largest since 2001. But Elle Decor isn't the only one hopping onto the bandwagon: The September issue of Domino also had a fashion theme with the likes of Marc Jacobs, the duo behind Libertine, Kenneth Jay Lane, Alberta Ferretti and Bella Freud. So who copied whom?

The launch publisher of red-hot Everyday with Rachael Ray has bailed out of the Reader's Digest Association title to throw her lot in with the Cond? Nastie crowd. Christine Guilfoyle, who was the publisher of Rachael Ray's magazine at its launch in October 2005, will be the new publisher of Women's Wear Daily, the influential trade publication. The move will likely only intensify the rivalry between RDA and its new CEO Mary Berner and her former employer, Cond? Nast, headed by Chairman S.I. Newhouse Jr. and CEO Charles Townsend. Until yesterday, it had mostly been one way, with Berner regularly raiding her former employer for top talent. Insiders at RDA dubbed the new wave of associates "Mary's Mafia" as up to eight top executives left Cond? Nast to join her, forcing out many of the RDA old guard. Everyday With Rachael Ray is one of the most successful magazine launches on the American publishing scene since the launch of O, the Oprah Magazine, a decade earlier from Hearst. One of Berner's first orders of business after taking the helm was to recruit her longtime friend Suzanne Grimes from Cond? Nast to be the president of RDA's home and food group, which included Everyday with Rachael Ray. MORE ONLINE

The publisher of BusinessWeek is bailing to join Salesforce.com, a fast-growing software developer. BusinessWeek Publisher Geoffrey Dodge leaves three months after he was passed over for the job of BusinessWeek president. That position went instead to Keith Fox, an insider at BusinessWeek publisher McGraw-Hill Cos., who had been running one of the company's book publishing divisions. Dodge, who had held the position of senior vice president and publisher of BusinessWeek since November 2004, could not be reached for comment. There is no replacement for Dodge as of yet. "We have hired a superstar from an organization we really respect," said Bruce Francis, vice president of corporate strategy for Salesforce.com, which sells software to businesses. Dodge's exit comes at a particularly tough time for the business publications category. The big three in the category - Forbes, Fortune and BusinessWeek - are all down in ad pages for the first half of 2007. Mike Dukmejian, the group publisher of Fortune and Money, was bounced earlier this year, with no replacement yet named. Business 2.0, a smaller rival in the field, is said to be only days away from ending its run as a Time Inc. magazine. Fast Company, though finally showing a small growth spurt, is still far back in the pack. MORE ONLINE

Martha Stewart's media-business instincts have mostly proved spot on, regardless of mistakes she's made along the way. That makes an idea percolating at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia -- a magazine targeting baby-boomer women -- all the more striking, since that isn't where publishers usually see great advertising potential. In fact, targeting older readers used to mean a fast track to a shut-down. Remember New Choices from the Reader's Digest Association? What about Longevity, Lifewise, Renaissance and Second Wind? Lear's? Mirabella? Now, however, Meredith's More magazine has found newsstand and ad success where others have foundered. Marketers no less important than Unilever are aiming squarely at older demographics. And Ann Taylor last week told analysts it's working on a new concept for fall 2008 targeted at "modern boomers," which the retailer's President-CEO Kay Krill called a segment "significantly underserved and represents a huge opportunity." ABC viewers will get cultural criticism mixed with previews of the Walt Disney network's new fall lineup, just the latest twist in broadcast outlets' increased emphasis on launching new programs in nontraditional ways. The network, whose hit shows include "Grey's Anatomy," "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," has made three different half-hour specials available to affiliates that offer looks at new fall programming and also feature the editors from Entertainment Weekly, TV Guide and People. The editorial staffers offer insight or comments on the programs being presented.. One of the previews surveys the network's Wednesday-night lineup, which includes "Pushing Daisies," one of the most highly anticipated programs of the new season; "Private Practice," a spin-off of the popular "Grey's Anatomy"; and "Dirty Sexy Money." Writers and editors from EW will discuss the shows. Another is focused on the network's Thursday-night lineup, and features editors from People looking at "Ugly Betty," "Grey's Anatomy" and the all-new "Big Shots," as well as a "sneak peek" at "Women's Murder Club." The third show spotlights TV Guide staffers examining ABC's fall comedies, such as "Samantha Who?," "Carpoolers" and "Cavemen." MORE ONLINE

The latest circulation numbers for b-to-b publications are out, and a handful of the biggest trade magazines, including Billboard, increased their circulation during the first half of 2007. The majority, though, were flat – a 0.22 percent increase overall – when compared to the first half of 2006, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. VNU’s Billboard increased its average paid circulation by 11 percent to 22,302. AdAge – at 58,983 average paid and non-paid copies -- was up 4.7 percent through June. I.D. – the design magazine – was up 21 percent to 29,168 average paid copies. HOW – another design magazine, was up 9.6 percent to 40,057. (Print, Step Inside Design and Creativity – the other magazines in the graphic design category, – were either flat or slightly down in average circulation, according to ABC figures.) Oil & Gas Journal, at 99,723, added nearly 20,000 to its circulation, a 24.8 percent increase. Something called Traffic World increased its circulation by 1,400 to 7,064 – a 35 percent jump. Forestry Source’s circulation was cut by 16 percent (2,000-plus copies) to 11,373. In the TV trade category, Television Week, like the ratings of the sitcoms it covers, dipped 16.7 percent to 30,205 – a loss of almost 6,000 to its weekly circulation. Broadcasting & Cable, at 23,006, was essentially flat.
