SEEING RED: American Media Inc. delivered on its promise of reporting its March 31, 2007 fiscal earnings by Aug. 31. And while it proved heavy reading going into the holiday weekend, the level of red ink it revealed made it clear why the publishing company might want to release the figures just before a three-day weekend. In the filing, the company advised it has a much higher level of debt than certain competitors, which "may put us at a competitive disadvantage," as well as limit its ability to pursue other business opportunities. As of June 30, AMI's total outstanding debt was approximately $1.1 billion. As for the continual delays in filing its reports, there is another one already set: AMI said it has already obtained an extension until October to report its earnings for the quarter ended June 30. Total operating loss for the year ended March 31 was $261,130. The prior fiscal year reported a loss of $96,782. NEW HIRE: Rosie Amodio has been named editor of In Style Specials, succeeding Sarah Gray Miller, who left two weeks ago after a rocky 15-month tenure. Amodio was previously vice president, editorial, of The Knot, overseeing both print and online content for all of its brands, including wedding planning magazine The Knot and The Nest, a lifestyle magazine for newlyweds. She's also held positions at Marie Claire, Maxim and Cosmopolitan. Amodio will edit the quarterly In Style Weddings, the biannual In Style Home and annual In Style Makeovers. She will also help relaunch instyleweddings.com in January. Amodio takes her new post Thursday; her first assignment will be to oversee the spring 2008 issue of Weddings. CHECKING IN: Burberry has a new director of U.S. public relations, just in time for Milan Fashion Week later this month. Alex Malgouyres has moved to New York for the job, following three years in Paris, as Burberry's head of p.r. for France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Switzerland. Prior to Burberry, Malgouyres worked in the Paris offices of KCD. "This is a great career opportunity," he said. He replaces John Cross, who left the company in June. MORE ONLINE

Optimists are hard to find in the magazine and newspaper businesses these days. Most print publishers worry that the Internet is taking over as the primary means of conveying information. George Green, the chief executive of Hearst Magazines International, would argue that the doomsayers have not been overseas lately. Last year, earnings at his division, which sells foreign versions of Cosmopolitan, Esquire and other Hearst publications, were up 17 percent. Mr. Green’s group already sells magazines in nearly 100 countries, and it keeps expanding. Last fall, it introduced its 58th international version of Cosmopolitan, this one in Denmark. This past spring, Esquire showed up in Indonesia, and Harper’s Bazaar went into Dubai. Hearst Magazines International is about to introduce Town & Country to the Philippines and Japan and versions of Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar to Romania. MORE ONLINE

The Economist has long printed ads for prestigious government and corporate jobs. Now, the magazine's parent is trying to attract advertising for watches, vodka, wide-screen television sets and other high-end goods. This week, London-based Economist Group Ltd. put out the first issue of a quarterly general-interest magazine called Intelligent Life. The magazine, sold on newsstands and by subscription, is targeted at wealthy and well-educated Economist readers in the U.K., Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The magazine appeared once in 2005 and once last year. MORE ONLINE

Golf Digest has had Jack Nicklaus on its cover 50 times in the past 57 years, but he hasn’t looked like this in a long time. With Americans bombarded by terms like global warming and stem-cell research, executives at Bonnier Corp., publisher of Popular Science, are betting the time is right for a science magazine that translates complex science and research subject matter for the masses. Bonnier, the U.S. outpost of Sweden’s Bonnier Group, is readying the launch of Science Illustrated, an English-language version of Bonnier Group’s Scandinavian science magazine. It will publish bimonthly beginning in January with a newsstand/subscription distribution of 170,000 and a goal of hitting 500,000 by 2012. Gregg Hano, publisher of Pop Sci, one of 18 enthusiast and parenting titles Bonnier bought earlier this year from Time Inc., said that Pop Sci will remain a guide to gear and gadgets, while Science Illustrated will explore culture, technology, medicine and nature for people interested in the sciences. Bauer Publishing, which built its business on the low newsstand cover price model, will raise prices on most of its 11 titles, the company confirmed. In Touch and Life & Style weeklies, which sell more than 2 million copies on the newsstand at a price of $1.99, will go up to $2.99. On the women’s service front, First for Women will go to $2.49 from $1.99; and Woman’s World to $1.79 from $1.49. Teen titles J-14 and M will go to $3.99 from $2.99. Soaps in Depth will go to $3.99 from $3.50. The increases will take effect at the end of October and early November. The moves come as major wholesalers have been pressuring Bauer and other low-cost magazine publishers to raise their cover prices in an effort to improve their profits. A recent study by Harrington Associates found wholesalers lose money on magazines priced under $2.49 (wholesalers get a percent of the cover price of each magazine they sell, a disincentive for them to carry low-priced magazines).
