Countdown Begins For Time Inc.'s Web Title
By Keith J. Kelly

Joe Mansueto, the founder of Morningstar, could not come to terms on a deal to purchase the battered Business 2.0 title from Time Inc. over the Labor Day weekend. That means an announcement about the magazine's imminent shutdown should come this week, with the October issue likely to be the magazine's last and some of the magazine's editorial content blended with larger sibling Fortune.

Mansueto was the sole party negotiating to buy Business 2.0, but a Friday deadline came and went. The money involved - some sources said Mansueto was offering around $5 million - was never lucrative enough for Time Inc., which was still interested in hanging on to some of the magazine's Web archives. John Koten, CEO of Mansueto Ventures, which publishes the magazines Inc. and Fast Company, confirmed the talks had broke down. "It's true we had taken a look at it, but ultimately we could not come to terms that were acceptable to all," he said.

Time Inc. has lost over $110 million since the magazine's founding in 1999 as a belated attempt to capitalize on the dot-com craze of the late 1990s. The name was purchased from Future Networks USA, which had published a magazine by that title. Time Inc. used the name to reflag its own tech-themed business title, eCompany Now. The surviving magazine had been kept alive for years since it had been the brainchild of Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief John Huey, who had started it when he was still running Fortune and turned it into a hot business title. Fortune has since had double-digit ad declines, posting one of the steepest drops in the category in the first half of 2007 as it battles Cond? Nast Portfolio.

Manning Up

Details Editor-in-Chief Dan Peres is getting very macho with a new column to be introduced in the magazine's November issue. It will focus on the life of a soldier who has been killed in combat in the Middle East. Called "Fallen Soldier," it will debut in the fashion magazine's first-ever holiday issue, which hits Nov. 6.

While the magazine has done serious stuff in the past, it does seem to be a big departure for a fashion magazine that some critics have said courts a largely gay male audience. "It's true it represents a departure for us, but I think it is something that is on the minds of our readers," said Peres. "It is not an attempt to butch up Details," said Peres.

He said he thinks Details is just more honest in its approach. "We make an effort to appeal to readers who are both gay and straight," he said. "Other magazines make an effort to consciously stamp out anything that could be construed as gay. "We just feel these columns are important human profiles, that's why we're running them," he said.

Goodbye, Business 2.0
By Nat Ives

After a long vigil that became particularly intense over the last six weeks, Time Inc. has decided to lower the boom on the beloved but under-performing Business 2.0 this morning. The magazine, which was founded in 1998 to cover business in the internet age, will cease publishing on its own and be folded into its much bigger sibling, Fortune.

Business 2.0 has drawn concern from Time Inc. brass for some time, not least because its ad pages sank 7.7% in 2005, and 5.1% in 2006, according to Publishers Information Bureau. For 2007 through the September issue, ad pages were down a crushing 35.3%, per the Media Industry Newsletter. Paid and verified circulation averaged 608,328 during the first half of this year, down 3.9% from the first half last year, according to the title's report to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Following a New York Times report that the September issue would likely be the last, some of the magazine's fans began a Facebook group called "I read Business 2.0 -- and I want to keep reading!" More than 2,300 people signed up.

Online Mag: Empowering Women in Entertainment
By Jason Fell

As part of an ongoing collaboration, the national alliance of Women In Film and General Motors have launched a free online magazine for women in the entertainment industry. The magazine, called Traction, will include informational sections such as “The Virtual Mentor,” industry-relevant feature stories and reviews of documentaries, films and television.

“The ambition of Traction is to provoke robust discussion and fresh thinking about women and the media,” editor-in-chief Judith James wrote on the Web site. “Let’s use this magazine to expand people’s way of thinking about women and this ubiquitous, attitude-forming industry of images,” wrote James. “Women who aren’t in the industry need to think about what they are seeing or when they like what they see versus when they simply accept it.”

Women In Film and GM announced their partnership in January 2005 to serve the 20 WIF nationwide chapters, and to develop and expand a joint slate of programs that promote, nurture and empower women in the entertainment industry.

Playboy Targets College Students with New Social Networking Site
By Jason Fell
9/5/07
http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=8029&prmID=1

Playboy has announced plans to venture into the online social networking space with Playboy U, a free networking site specifically for college students. The site, launched late last month, is open to college students 18 years of age and older who have a valid ".edu" e-mail address. The site will feature members’ writing, photography and videos, and encourages user-generated dialogue about relationships, student life and pop culture. The site will not feature nude photography.

“We like to think of the site as a ‘campus advisor’ and expert on how to make the most of the college experience,” Playboy U director Chip Ross tells Folio: Alert. What makes Playboy U different from other social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace is the community and content, according to Ross. "Playboy U’s mix of journalism, entertainment and ‘cross-campus’ dialogue is distinct within social networking,” he says. The Playboy U staff will work with the magazine to bring relevant features to life, Ross says. The site will also feature videos from Playboy parties and interviews with magazine founder Hugh Hefner.

Playboy the magazine has been slumping financially in recent years, after posting a nearly $50 million loss in 2000. According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations’ recent FAS-FAX report, Playboy declared a total paid and verified circulation of 2,880,337 in the first half of the year, down five percent from 3,031,176 over the same period in 2006. Is the launch of Playboy U another attempt to bolster the magazine’s otherwise stagnant revenues? “Our goal is to continue to develop a relevant and exciting community for college students,” Ross says. “Playboy U has a unique position in the world of social networking and we’re confident that the site will continue to grow exponentially.”
