******* Paar-taay! Alpha Media Inc. is the new owner of Maxim and Blender, so naturally when it was looking to launch a new venture it went right to its beer-and-babes sweet spot and came up with an event production company, called Alpha Productions. The venture quietly began operations a couple of weeks ago, with Doug Turner, previously associate publisher of the now-defunct Stuff, to head it up. For now, its six staff members (four former Dennis Publishing employees, two new hires) are taking on the previously planned added-value events that partner with advertisers. (The Stuff Style Awards were hastily rebranded to the Maxim Style Awards. "It got upgraded," said Turner. This, from someone who was selling Stuff just a couple of months ago? "I can say it now.") "We understand young men's lifestyles and needs and desires," said Turner. And while Maxim and Blender's names will continue to be slapped on invites for advertisers, the hope is the production company will become a stand-alone proposition. "We would like a brand identity all our own," Turner said. The Seventies Were It There were better-known names at the GQ 50th anniversary party Tuesday -- Kanye West, Jay-Z and Beyonce, Diddy -- but a cluster of men known more for their faces and physiques could lay claim to greater influence, at least in the magazine. They were the models who appeared in the magazine in the Seventies and Eighties, mostly in early photos by Bruce Weber that have had a lasting aesthetic impact. As detailed in a story in the October GQ by David Kamp, models like Jeff Aquilon and Michael Ives were discovered by the magazine and emerged as gay icons. And Renauld White, also in attendance, was one of the first black models to appear on the cover. (Sammy Davis Jr. was the first black man, in 1967, and the magazine continues to have a significant African American readership. "I sometimes hear people say it like it's a secret," said editor in chief Jim Nelson. "Art Cooper knew that, I know that, and we celebrate it." Indeed, the party's biggest names were African-American musician-moguls and athletes.) MORE ONLINE

Consumer magazines posted a one percent increase in the share of the media advertising revenue pie during the first half of 2007 when compared to the same period in 2006, according to the Magazine Publishers of America, citing TNS Media Intelligence figures. Overall, magazines posted a revenue share of 17.7 percent in the first half of the year. Television, at 44.9 percent, had the largest share. Newspapers, not surprisingly, slipped 1.1 percent – the biggest decline of any sector – and fell to third (17.6 percent) behind magazines overall. “These numbers demonstrate the vitality of the magazine medium,” MPA president Nina Link said in statement. “For two quarters in a row, magazine ad revenue share has increased on a relatively flat page count as the overall ad market declined. Advertisers continue to recognize that consumers connect powerfully with both the editorial and advertising in our medium. Magazine readers value the advertising; they don’t try to avoid it.” MORE ONLINE

The editorial turnstile at celebrity-obsessed Life & Style Weekly spun again yesterday when Bauer Publishing named Richard Spencer, who is already editor in chief of the company's In Touch Weekly, to the additional post of editor in chief at Life & Style Weekly. At Life & Style, Mr. Spencer succeeds Mark Pasetsky, who is going back to the consulting firm Mark Allen & Co. after less than a year in the post. Mr. Pasetsky was named editor in chief at Life & Style just last November, succeeding Debra Birnbaum less than a year after she was named to the post. "Richard's leadership at In Touch Weekly has led to overwhelming success of the magazine," Hubert Boehle, CEO of Bauer Publishing, said in a statement. "His masterful direction and management will continue to grow both In Touch and Life & Style. Our success in the world of celebrity culture will only get stronger under his continued direction." Encapsulating five decades on one cover is no easy feat. So for its October issue commemorating its 50th year, GQ is running 10 individual covers, featuring such male legends as Robert Redford and Jack Nicholson. The latter “was a kind of icon who represented a swagger of personality, and was so important to how men became who they are,” explained editor Jim Nelson. GQ might be showing a little swagger of its own these days. Laddie magazines may be pass?, but on the eve of GQ’s 50th anniversary, ad pages at the Cond? Nast title rose 5.72 percent to 1,440 year to date through October, driven by fashion and luxury goods. Multiplatform ads in the anniversary issue, which feature some design tweaks, include Maker’s Mark, whose deal included six print pages, an online component and four events for bourbon lovers. The title also scored new advertisers in October including Lucky Jeans and Seiko watches. Peter King Hunsinger, vp, publisher, expects to finish the year up 5 percent in pages. “If you can be modern and smart, it’s what people want,” Hunsinger said of GQ’s appeal. “There’s a return to a little more sophistication. All the rap stars are wearing suits now.” GQ is holding its own at a time when mature men’s books have turned in a mixed performance this year, surpassed in ad page gains by younger titles like Cond? Nast’s Men’s Vogue and Rodale’s BestLife, which also target affluent men. Overall, men’s lifestyle category ad pages rose 9.4 percent this year through October, per the Mediaweek Monitor. MORE ONLINE

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream ... from Gourmet magazine? In another example of how giant marketers are accelerating the reallocation of advertising dollars to nontraditional methods of reaching consumers, the division of Nestl? that sells H?agen-Dazs ice cream is sponsoring an elaborate campaign centered on a contest to find an exotic flavor to sell under the H?agen-Dazs brand name. The campaign, called Scoop: The H?agen-Dazs Flavor Search, includes a section of the H?agen-Dazs Web site (haagen-dazs.com/scoop); user-generated content, in the forms of video clips, photographs and letters from consumers proposing ideas for flavors; promotional events at places like cooking schools; sample giveaways; short videos, known as Webisodes; and appearances by Sara Moulton, the executive chef at Gourmet. Gourmet, part of the Cond? Nast Publications division of Advance Publications, is co-sponsoring the contest with the Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream Holdings unit of Nestl?. The contest is scheduled to end tomorrow with an announcement on “Good Morning America” on ABC, featuring Ms. Moulton, of the winning entry chosen from among three finalist flavors.

What is it about consumer magazines that make them immune to the slings and arrows of this outrageous ad downturn? Luxury magazines have thus far been immune to the ad recession. Obviously advertisers want to reach their wealthy readerships. Back in 1994 Folio observed that the growth pattern in consumer magazines remained steady despite industry trends. From the Magazine Publishers of America newsletter. ''The latest advertising revenue data from TNS Media Intelligence shows that consumer magazines beat out all other non-digital media categories, including television, newspapers, radio and outdoor, in increasing ad share during the first half of the year. Magazines are second only to the U.S. Internet, which does not include Search, in gaining ad share during that time period.'' Price Waterhouse Cooper's Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2004-2008 Report forecasts that consumer magazines will average an annual growth rate of 3 percent, to $26.5 billion in 2008.
