******* A disadvantage that both sectors have is that they can't rely on three advertising-strong categories--fashion, beauty, and pharmaceuticals (very vital to the also automotive- dependent People) to pick up the slack lost by car ads. Per Publishers Information Bureau, first-half-2007 car spending was -1.5% (sinking further from year-end-2006's - 11.0%), and with that downward momentum continuing during the summer, it is reflective in Newsweek/Time/U.S. News & World Report and BusinessWeek/Forbes/Fortune all being down through September. BW/Fortune percentage losses are in double-digits, and Time's estimated -8.09% is indicative, too, that advertisers have not yet embraced its change to a Friday release. Bauer Publishing's InTouch (+41.50%) and Life & Style Weekly (+18.71%) remain advertising strong, but whether that holds following next month's $1.99-to-$2.99 newsstand hike (forced, as The New Single Copy and others reported, by pressure from retailers) will be watched. Also... IT founding editor-in-chief (October 2003) Richard Spencer now "doubles" at L&SW with the departure of Mark Pasetsky. MORE ONLINE

Early this summer, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign for president learned that the men’s magazine GQ was working on a story the campaign was sure to hate: an account of infighting in Hillaryland. So Clinton’s aides pulled a page from the book of Hollywood publicists and offered GQ a stark choice: Kill the piece, or lose access to planned celebrity coverboy Bill Clinton. Despite internal protests, GQ editor Jim Nelson met the Clinton campaign’s demands, which had been delivered by Bill Clinton’s spokesman, Jay Carson, several sources familiar with the conversations said. Like the previous version published by Premiere, Trump Life will be sold on newsstands and be given out free at hotels, condos and golf courses bearing the Trump name. Some people in the banking business say Time Inc. is to be spun off, probably in the next few weeks. The leading magazine publisher in the world is but a part of the Time Warner empire, of course, and not the most profitable part. The words "magazine publisher" and "profitable" are seldom used in the same sentence these days. Warning signs include the way they unceremoniously dumped Business 2.0 a few weeks ago, turning down offers from rivals such as Mansueto Ventures (Fast Company) and using surviving staff members to fatten the masthead at Fortune. "It wasn't a big enough loss for the market to care," according to one who has been apprised of the thinking behind the deal. "I think they are scrubbing the quarterly numbers for the Time Inc. division, to get ready for a spin-out." MORE ONLINE

The solid business relationship between the Hearst Magazines executive vp/chief marketing officer/publishing director and HM president (since November 1995) Cathie Black was sealed on a napkin at New York's Mickey Mantle's restaurant shortly before the announced October 6, 1997, hiring. Surprising news because of Clinton's 1984-1997 stint at Cond? Nast, with rivalries at Hearst throughout (most pronounced for the 1988-1994 Gentlemen's Quarterly publisher was the often open feud with Esquire), and because Clinton seemingly turned down more lucrative offers, including the TV Guide/Primedia presidencies, to take what in name was a lateral position. Clinton was CN executive vp when he left in August. Then-president Steve Florio replaced him with Cathy Viscardi (she was dismissed in October 1999; he retired in January 2004). Clinton said at the time that the HM job "played up to my strengths." Perhaps he could have envisioned the many corporate marketing campaigns, with our favorite being the late 1990s trade ads showing all of the editors and publishers ("to put faces behind the names," he says) on location at such landmarks as the Statue of Liberty. But in 1997, he could not have envisioned the force that HM would become in integrated marketing, or that by 2001, all 13 publishers would be reporting to him. That he has not had to make that many hires (Esquire's Kevin O'Malley [see page 8], Redbook's Mary Morgan, and House Beautiful's Kate Kelly Smith are three notables) shows the quality of his choices and the stability of the company. Clinton's first hire, corporate senior vp/ad sales and marketing Jeff Hamill (ex-Good Housekeeping), will have a 10th-anniversary milestone of his own in December. "That ad revenues have risen every year, even in bad economic periods like the aftermath from the September 11, 2001, attacks, is among our proudest achievements," he says. "The [one-year-old] Hearst Tower is symbolic of this being an exciting place to work, and I remain very invigorated." MORE ONLINE

ON TIME: Hollywood types aren't always known for their punctuality, but they certainly seem to like watches — at least the contracts they get to advertise them. Nicole Kidman will appear in Omega's ads in the U.S. for the first time after being a global brand ambassador since 2005. She was photographed by Brigitte Lacombe wearing the Omega De Ville co-axial chronograph. The ads bow on Monday on billboards and in the November issues of Vanity Fair, W and Gourmet. Other Omega ambassadors include Cindy Crawford and Olympian Michael Phelps. But Kidman isn't alone in the jewelry world. Catherine Zeta-Jones has scored herself a deal to be the new face of six-year-old jewelry brand DiModolo. Zeta-Jones, who is also the face of Elizabeth Arden and T-Mobile, will be feted on Oct. 4 with a cocktail party at the New York-based brand's Madison Avenue flagship. Benny Shabtai, president and chief executive of the brand, also will launch DiModolo's first timepiece collection that evening. The brand is slated to launch a Couture collection incorporating precious gemstones by the end of the year. Zeta-Jones, who succeeds T?a Leoni, was shot by Rankin for the campaign. The new ads will begin appearing in November issues of W, Vogue and In Style. MORE ONLINE

ESQUIRE GOES UPTOWN: Esquire will bring its bachelor pad back to New York for its fifth iteration. Esquire North will open on Thursday at 111 Central Park North, a new luxury condominium at the north side of Central Park owned by residential real estate developer Athena Group. The 5,700-square-foot space spans three floors, two outdoor terraces, two balconies, a gym, separate media and gaming rooms and a library — but only one bedroom. ALMOST TOO LATE: It would be hard to imagine two more divergent events than New Yorker editor in chief David Remnick interviewing Seymour Hersh and a David Denby Q&A with Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen of "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" fame, but in the eyes of New Yorker Festivalgoers, they're close in popularity. Both events rapidly sold out their 400-ticket capacity, though the crafters of what New Yorker film critic Denby called the "infantilism of the male bond" did beat the journalistic heavyweights by selling out in six minutes to Remnick and Hersh's seven. The more intimate events of around 30 tickets — a studio tour with Jeff Koons, a tour of the Bloomberg building, a restaurant tour with Calvin Trillin — were gone in one minute flat. For those who didn't snap up tickets fast enough, for the first time the magazine is holding 10 percent of all event tickets to be sold at the Metropolitan Pavilion starting at 3 p.m. Oct. 5, the first day off the festival. CRYSTAL BALL: Ellen von Unwerth has sexed up 243-year-old crystal house Baccarat. The German photographer, known for her provocative imagery, shot the brand's fall advertising campaign in the Philippe Starck-designed Baccarat mansion in Paris. The theme of the shoot is a "crystal party." One of the black-and-white shots depicts a model draped in the brand's Gothic, black crystal necklaces with crosses looking away from an elaborate crystal hand mirror. The campaign will bow in October issues including W, Elle Decor, Harper's Bazaar and Vanity Fair. MORE ONLINE
