******* David Carey, group publisher and publishing director of Conde Nast Portfolio/Business Media thinks that the magazine industry is currently outside of its comfort zone, and that's not a bad thing. “The industry is at an inflection point,” Carey said. “We're watching the newspaper industry write its own obituary. We must avoid that for magazines.” During a luncheon presentation at the 2007 Folio: Show Monday, Carey highlighted a career in which he's flouted the conventional wisdom and moved outside his comfort zone whenever he got too settled into a position to achieve success with products ranging from the launch of Smart Money during the first Gulf War, the re-launch of House & Garden, the rejuvenation of the New Yorker into being a financial success, and now Portfolio, which debuted in May and went monthly with its September issue. “Launching a big, thick business magazine in 2007, who thought that was possible?” said Carey. Carey said that dealing with the criticism and nay-saying he experienced working with Smart Money and House & Garden prepared him for much of the negative reaction to Portfolio from the competition and bloggers. “It's the job of your competitors to do everything they can to slow you down,” Carey said. “Your job is to use the flexibility of your new product to outthink the legacy competition.” MORE ONLINE
2. Media Week
Celebrity gossip is about to get more expensive--again. Wenner Media's Us Weekly is hiking its cover price to $3.99 from $3.49 with the Oct. 22 issue on sale Oct. 12, becoming the latest celeb weekly to adopt a price increase. An Us Weekly increase was not unexpected, as several of its competitors have been moving up in cover price in recent months. Northern & Shell kicked off the increases this year when it raised the price of its U.S. edition of OK! by $1, to $2.99. Time Inc.'s People magazine went to $3.99 from $3.49 with the Sept. 10 issue, from $3.49. And Bauer Publishing this fall is raising the prices of In Touch and Life & Style weeklies, both the low-priced leaders at $1.99, by $1 OK!'s single-copy sales fell off following its price increase, although sales have since improved with the help of increased distribution. The Us increase comes as the title prepares for another rate base increase in January, by 2.7 percent to 1.9 million. A Wenner spokesman said the higher price was market-tested during the summer and that it doesn't expect the higher price to lead to a falloff in newsstand sales, however. “We don't anticipate a negative impact on sales,” the rep said. 3. 'Journal'ist Needed
IT'S been a month since James Kaminsky resisted Jann Wenner's counteroffer to stay put as the editor of Men's Journal, and since then there's been no replacement at the monthly magazine. So far, Wenner has chatted with Michael Hainey, the No. 2 at GQ to Editor-in-Chief Jim Nelson, and Mark Healy, a one-time GQ staffer who now runs Penthouse as editor-in-chief. Other names believed to be on Wenner's list are John Homans and Jon Gluck, both of New York magazine, and Men's Journal's No. 2, Brad Weiner - the interim editor who is seen as a long shot for the permanent gig. Wenner has basically been averaging one editor per year, and whomever he hires will be the magazine's third editor in 12 months. MORE ONLINE
4. Folio
There's no question the New Yorker is an institution in the magazine industry - but even a brand as powerful and revered as the New Yorker has to be careful wading into digital waters. _ Case in point: During the U.S. Open tennis championships in Flushing New York earlier this month, John Colapinto, one of the New Yorker's bloggers, captured and unloaded a grainy video clip of Roger Federer to YouTube and embedded it in a post on the Sporting Scene, the magazine's U.S. Open blog. One slight problem: like most of the clip-happy blogosphere, the New Yorker didn't have the rights to upload or post the video; CBS and USA, the networks carrying the Open, did. The magazine was operating under the bloggy interpretation of fair use. That is, if you are critiquing something, particularly a live event, then using the clip to allow your readers to watch along with you is certainly fair. (Honestly, how can you read a blogger's rant of Britney's trainwreck appearance at the Video Music Awards without simultaneously watching it?) The clip was promptly pulled by YouTube at the networks' request MORE ONLINE
5. Jezebell
Looking back at old issues of Cosmopolitan, we've come to the realization that former Cosmo editor Helen Gurley Brown was not only obsessed with calorie-restriction and randomly-exposed breasts, but that she was just plain crazy (in a charming way, that is). Take her editor's letters: The name-dropping! The strange transitions! (She goes from singing Barbara Walters' praises to discussing the new trend of eye-lifts among younger women without so much as a lead-in.) The awkward use of italics! After the jump, Helen's October 1977 Cosmopolitan editor's letter, which covers everything from lack of libido and ex-wives to Frank Sinatra, Walter Cronkite, and eating lobsters with Jaws star Roy Scheider.
