******* NEW BAG There's been some seat swapping in Elle's accessories department. Nina Sterghiou has been named accessories editor, replacing Lauren Benward, who left the magazine earlier this month. Sterghiou contributed to Time Style & Design and New York before joining Elle. Meanwhile, Kyle Anderson, previously an assistant in the department, was promoted to associate accessories editor, replacing Monika Pernal, who has also left the company. REVOLVING DOOR Mary Berner wasted no time finding a new publisher of Reader's Digest, naming Jeff Wellington to the post on Wednesday. As reported by the New York Post, Vanessa Reed left to return to Meredith Corp. as associate publisher of More and Fitness. Wellington will begin Oct. 22, joining from The Parenting Group (which publishes Parenting and Babytalk), where he served as president and group publisher since December 2005. He will report to Eva Dillon, president of RD Inspiration and group publisher of Reader's Digest. During the past year, Wellington assisted in The Parenting Group's transition to Bonnier Group from Time Inc. He could not be reached by press time. WHO WAS FIRST? Aesthetics are clearly more part of the business magazine conversation than ever, with Fortune and BusinessWeek both redesigning to chip away at one of Portfolio's supposed competitive advantages. But Fast Company, on a determined rebound, is laying claim to having been there all along, both in terms of editorial emphasis and its pages. As proof, Fast Company has a Masters of Design issue each October, which this year is Christine Osekoski's first issue as publisher. This year's issue has 85 ad pages, an 83 percent increase over last October, with a 22 percent increase year to date. Industrial designer Yves B?har is on the cover and the magazine singles out a "talent pool" that includes retail store designer Masamichi Katayama, who's worked for Marc Jacobs, and Stephen Burks, who did the bottle for Calvin Klein's ckIN2U. Osekoski also recently hired an associate publisher: Amie Deutch, who had the same position at FHM — picked in part, Osekoski said, for her contacts in nonendemic advertising categories like liquor. And the changes aren't only on the print side: the magazine will relaunch its Web site at the BlogWorld convention in November."
2. Ad Age
The new regime at Reader's Digest Association finished rounding out the executive team at its flagship title today, naming Jeff Wellington publisher of Reader's Digest. Mr. Wellington had been president and group publisher at Parenting Group, which Time Inc. sold to Bonnier Group last February, since December 2005. We are delighted to welcome Jeff Wellington to Reader's Digest," said Eva Dillion, president of the RD Inspiration division and group publisher of Reader's Digest magazine, in a statement on the hire. "Jeff joins us at an exciting and pivotal time in the magazine's evolution, as we reposition Reader's Digest in the marketplace and ramp up for a redesign this coming January." The Reader's Digest Association, which in addition to Reader's Digest publishes Every Day with Rachael Ray and other titles, went private last March in a $2.8 billion deal that installed Mary Berner as president-CEO. Mr. Wellington succeeds Ben Madden, who was turned out amid the management change; Mr. Madden was recently named VP-sales at Media Networks Inc., part of Time Inc. In addition to introducing a new design, Reader's Digest will cut its guaranteed paid circulation this January to 8 million from 10 million in a bid for cost efficiencies and better audience composition.
3. Folio
Esquire editor David Granger loves magazines. But he doesn’t always love them. “Fuck, I’m still editing a magazine,” Granger told the crowd at New York's Marriott Marquee during the 2007 Folio: Show Tuesday. That realization was a few years ago. Granger, he said, then became obsessed with motivating his staff to push the boundaries of the print medium. “Out of desperation, despair and despondency,” as Granger put it. The National Magazine Award collector began to tinker with the magazine’s design, redesigning the front-of-the-book and editor’s letter to include user-generated content. Granger also began to insert design elements into the margins of the pages, often without explanation. “I don’t know how many people noticed, but those who did, they liked it,” Granger said. “It’s an opportunity for delight we weren’t giving people before.”
