1. The New York Times
For the Rich, Magazines Fat on Ads
By David Carr
October 1, 2007
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/01/business/media/01carr.html?ref=business

The rich will always be a good bet in publishing. First, they have the money, at least most of it. Second, they have the time, which is the by far the biggest luxury of our age.

So until the rich hire other people to read for them, a magazine is a good way to get their attention. Particularly now, it turns out.

Last week, a new Trump Magazine was announced by Ocean Drive Media Group. The week before, The Wall Street Journal announced Pursuits, a magazine supplement, which will compete with the baldly named How to Spend It from The Financial Times and the cryptically named T magazines from The New York Times.

TV Guide cuts clutter with online video service

TV Guide is trying to muscle in on YouTube's considerable turf.

The publication famous for its television-centric editorial and show listings will launch at TVGuide.com (http://TVGuide.com) on Tuesday its Online Video Guide, a search service that will attempt to filter out the junk and leave users with the best of Internet video that is related to television.

Searching for video content of "24" or "The Office," for example, at Google, Yahoo or any other search engine leads to a painful array of too many choices, said Paul Greenberg, GM of TV Guide Online. At TVGuide.com, though, a search of "24" at the new search device will first point users to free episodes available at Fox.com, and then to all the other professionally produced content related to the show.

Playboy Freer Online, More Restrained in Print
By Nat Ives

http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=120833

It's not easy for magazine publishers to set priorities in this tilting media landscape, where print advertising brings top dollar but web audiences grow fastest. Playboy—a title whose content falls squarely into a category that people will still pay real money for online—is undertaking what some would call a risky strategy: reducing its paid print circulation while at the same time trying to attract an online audience that wants free content.

Instead of obsessing over retaining print readers and trying to sell content online, as in the past, Playboy's brand managers will now try to expand its reach wherever that may be. Plenty of publishers have proclaimed similar philosophies, of course, but the tough practical choices involved lend Playboy some extra credibility. As part of its reorientation, Playboy is slashing its paid circulation to 2.6 million from 3 million, a 13% reduction, effective with the January issue. That will compound a cut of nearly 5% just two years earlier.

"We have a very strong print product, but there is a revolution that is taking place around us," said Bob Meyers, president of the media group at Playboy Enterprises. "There is a very dramatic change in the way the consumer is consuming media."

Memo Pad

VERONIQUE'S TALE: Veronique Branquinho is normally not one to stroll down memory lane, but as she celebrates her label's 10th anniversary and readies a retrospective at the Antwerp, Belgium, fashion museum MoMu for March, the Belgian designer has been obliged to reflect on the past. Branquinho launched her label in 1997 and quickly became known for an elegantly somber take on femininity. That's the mood she hopes to infuse in Belgium's A Magazine, which she guest edited for the October issue, joining designer-cum-editor predecessors Martin Margiela, Yohji Yamamoto, Haider Ackermann, Undercover designer Jun Takahashi and Martine Sitbon.

CHEAPER THAN A DECORATOR: For around four bucks, a person can buy a copy of a home magazine to pick up a few decorating tips for their apartment. Then again, for $1.6 million to $1.75 million, readers of Hearst Magazines' Country Living, House Beautiful, O at Home or Veranda can skip a few steps ahead and buy an apartment inspired by their favorite magazine. Hearst Home Group, which focuses on increasing home advertising at select Hearst titles, has tapped designers, including Celerie Kemble for House Beautiful and Annie Selke for Country Living, to design apartments that reflect the aesthetic of each magazine at the new building 10 West End Avenue in New York. The new apartments will be featured in the November issues, except for O at Home, where it appears in the fall issue out now. The only caveat is that the O at Home apartment will not be available for purchase with the editor-selected items. Instead, these furnishings will be sold in an online auction, with proceeds benefitting Women In Need.

MTV CRIB: There was one VIP who was able to hold court at the $8.5 million Esquire North triplex apartment before it opened its doors Thursday. Jay-Z took over the space on Sept. 23 to film the video for his new song, "American Gangster." The rapper shot scenes in the light-drenched Versace living room, on the apartment's three terraces overlooking Central Park and on the custom glass spiral staircase that leads from the main floor up to the second floor. His girlfriend Beyonc? wasn't part of the video, but did spend quality time napping in the apartment's media room, outfitted by Hugo Boss. Does that add to the asking price?
