******* While lifestyle coverage has become a staple of business titles like Forbes and Portfolio, BusinessWeek is taking a strictly-business approach with new design and editorial changes that appear Oct. 12. With its first redesign in four years, the magazine drops its lifestyle column, Executive Life, while upping the emphasis on news and global coverage. In a dramatic change to the cover, art director Andrew Horton, working with Boston-based ad agency Modernista!, replaced the serif logo with a smaller, sans-serif logo and jettisoned the blue bar that separated the logo from the cover image. “The notion was, it’s clean, simple, it’s bold but elegant, and kind of straightforward,” explained Stephen Adler, editor in chief. Detailing the changes in an interview today, Adler said he began looking at overhauling the book right after taking the job in December 2004. “The reader is much busier, they’re much more engaged with the global economy than they were before, and they’re consuming business information way differently from the way they used to.” MORE ONLINE

“I think my bureau will be almost as big as the Time magazine bureau,” David Corn was telling The Observer on Monday afternoon, a kid-in-a-candy-store excitement in his voice. That morning, Mr. Corn—whose name for years has been synonymous with the Washington coverage of the country’s most prominent magazine of the left, The Nation—had been named the D.C. bureau chief of Mother Jones, the San Francisco–based liberal bi-monthly. He’s not wrong: Time currently has seven Washington reporters devoted to covering politics—the same number as Mother Jones, with the addition of Mr. Corn. The magazine’s aggressive Washington strategy, coming as it does at a time when most mainstream news outlets are cutting back, may be a sign that in this election season, the lefty media is generating all the hea In the past few months, Mother Jones has assembled a team of liberal-media name-checks like James Ridgeway, the longtime Washington correspondent of The Village Voice; Laura Rozen, a national-security writer for The American Prospect; and Stephanie Mencimer, a former editor of the Washington Monthly and National Magazine Award nominee. THERE are signs of tension at Every Day with Rachael Ray, the magazine that became an overnight success and was hailed as the hottest magazine launch since the early days of O, the Oprah Magazine. Ray, the founder and editor-in-chief, is said to be upset with the executive upheavals at her namesake magazine, which occurs at a time when the magazine's meteoric growth rate appears to be slowing down. The magazine is still growing its rate base - the amount of circulation it promises advertisers it will deliver each month. But the plan to push it to 1.7 million by August - announced with much hype around the time of the American Magazine Conference a year ago - was quietly scrapped over the summer. MORE ONLINE

American Media's long nightmare may finally be over. The publisher of Star and The National Enquirer yesterday released its quarterly earnings report for the period ending June 30, 2007 - which the company said brings its fiscal reporting requirements to the SEC up to date for the first time in 20 months. n the report, the company said that its revenues for the period were up 5.6 percent to $121.8 million while its operating income was $26.2 million, compared to $4.6 million for the same period in 2006, representing a 470 percent swing. The net loss for the period narrowed to $123,000, compared to $27.4 million a year ago. MORE ONLINE

The Web has an unlikely new rival when it comes to "interactive" advertising: magazine pages. As technology for song-producing audio chips and light-powering batteries gets smaller — and cheaper — marketers are using the devices in print ads. For instance, a button on a new Yellow Tail wine ad sets off four blinking firefly tails. Even more low-tech print ads have become more innovative. Advertisers have added offbeat objects for consumers to "play" with, such as temporary tattoos, plant seeds and even a nearly 3-foot-long replica of an Ultimate Fighting Championship belt. A year after Ziff-Davis ceased production of the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine in January 2007, Sony and Future US have teamed up to exhume an official PlayStation mag once more. The first issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine goes on sale in late November, will come at a frequency of 13 issues per year, and promises "unprecedented access to the world of PlayStation," including PS3, PS2, and PSP coverage. Presumably, Future US will discontinue production of the independent PlayStation Magazine (PSM) in lieu of the Sony-sanctioned publication. Future US was not immediately available for comment. FANNING THE FLAME: In a letter directed to Congresswoman Lois Capps (D., Calif.) in August on the topic of tobacco advertising, Vogue's publishing director Tom Florio said the magazine would continue to practice "our right of freedom of the press," but encouraged Capps to pass legislation on the serious health issues brought on by the extended use of tobacco products. And it looks like that process has begun, as the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing today on H.R. 1108, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. The bill would give the Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate tobacco products, including advertising. While no publishing industry executives will testify at the hearing, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids will do so about how the new FDA authority would impact the Camel No. 9 ads, said a spokeswoman for Capps. The congresswoman has been encouraging magazine publishers to stop running those ads for the last few months because, she claims, they encourage teen smoking EXPANDING THE PORTFOLIO: It might have gotten lost in all the debate over the actual magazine, but Portfolio also has a Web component, and to drive more eyeballs onto portfolio.com, the site is in deal mode — with other publications. The Web site has formed a partnership with washingtonpost.com that will provide content for the Post's new Business Travel section, targeted at frequent flyers. Ari Brandt, general manager, digital media at Portfolio, said there are three reasons to make this type of deal: increasing brand awareness, helping along its "organic searches" and growing referrals. He added the ink is now dry on a deal with abcnews.com, which will begin posting Kevin Maney's blog, Tech Observer, sometime during the next few days. And look out for four to five more deals before the year is over, Brandt said, declining to provide more information. MORE ONLINE
