******* BTW, Ed doesn't endorse the advertisement you see above. It's just what happens when you use a free e-newsletter service.
******* The Oct. 4 issue of Wenner Media’s Rolling Stone sports an impossible-to-miss lenticular ad for the Fox TV network, featuring characters from the net’s Sunday-night lineup whooping it up on a roller-coaster ride, their images changing as the reader tilts the ad. Meanwhile, an eye-popping ad for NBC’s new series Bionic Woman that appeared in Time Inc.’s Entertainment Weekly went one further, with the heroine’s mechanically enhanced winker lighting up as readers turned the page. Those executions may be just the beginning of a creative and technological revolution in print ads. As marketers look for more ways to capture the attention of media-saturated consumers, publishers are exploring much more intricate ad units, up to and including ads that feature video. A media buyer and another industry source confirmed that Time Inc., a sponsor of the MIT Media Lab, is working on technology and has looked at prototypes that would put moving pictures on a page. There are no guarantees yet, but Cond? Nast Publications chief operating officer John Bellando said Friday that the company may construct a new office tower at Hudson Yards in Manhattan. And while the development would not be completed for roughly 10 years, Cond? Nast has agreed to join forces with the Durst Organization and Vornado Realty Group, who will submit a request for proposal to develop the West Side Rail Yard. The winning proposal will be selected sometime during the first quarter of next year. In the announcement, Bellando added, "...our participation would provide Cond? Nast with the opportunity to secure prime space in this exciting development." But who would design the cafeteria this time?

Advance Publications’ Sunday supplement Parade is launching single-topic pullout sections that it hopes will appeal to underpenetrated categories including automotive, financial services and corporate branding, in addition to bedrock categories like healthcare, packaged goods and technology. The Parade Selects pullouts are designed to be single-sponsor, most likely appealing to marketers with multiple brands. But unlike advertorials, Parade will produce Selects using its own edit staff and retain editorial control. In what Parade expects to be a typical use of the format, Clorox will sponsor the first Selects, scheduled for Oct. 14. Titled Your Healthy Home, the 16-page pullout includes stories on cold prevention and comfort foods. Clorox will use the venue to promote seven of its household products, including bleach and disinfecting wipes. MORE ONLINE

And, it goes without saying that we also need someone who is as committed to producing the best, whether it's a list of doctors or a cutting-edge fashion spread. This includes invoices and other accounting matters, as well as working with the art and production departments to create a magazine. It's also terribly important that this person has copy editing skills and a customer service-oriented mind. Because, alas, sometimes we have to deal with the public, so this requires someone who is gentle but stern and comfortable talking to people. And speaking of talking to people, this person also has to "get out there," whether it's attending an open house for a wedding vendor or scoping out a new salon.
