1. The Deal
No Sex and Drugs?
By Yvette Kantrow

No sooner had we recovered from the prelaunch hype surrounding the arrival of Portfolio magazine — not to mention the post-launch disappointment and inevitable schadenfraude — then we now have to contend with the hullabaloo around another new business media offering: the Fox Business Network channel. Set to launch Oct. 15, Rupert Murdoch's long-awaited competitor to CNBC last week gave the public a glimpse of what it has been cooking up all these months in the form of a marketing Web site (foxbusiness.com).

Once you get past the flashiness of the thing — individual photos of the ridiculously overcoiffed on-air team stream by in a manner meant to emulate a stock ticker — you gather that the new channel's core values or beliefs appear to be "Money, Success and Happiness," with the latter illustrated by an American flag. No surprise there; this is Fox News. But what really struck us is that like the pre-launch Portfolio, Fox Business is promising to reinvent its genre-as-we-know-it and produce a business-media product for people who, well, don't really like business.

To whit, anchor Cody Willard, an investment manager who used to appear on CNBC's "Kudlow & Co.", says on the site that he's "excited to jump into the mainstream" and voice his "many fundamental objections." These apparently include reporters who attribute a dip in Dow futures to a slight rise in oil prices, when the real reason is selling pressure from "some manic-depressive running a giant hedge fund." Similarly, anchor Dagen McDowell tells the site's viewers to "forget about monetary policy and interest rates"; she and "everyone else" is "utterly obsessed with the fact that Alan Greenspan wrote most of his new book in the bathtub."

CosmoGirl, There.com to launch Virtual Desitination
By Mike Shields

CosmoGirl has announced plans to partner with There.com, a growing virtual world aimed at teens and twentysomethings, to launch a branded virtual destination designed for users of the site.

The new CosmoGirl Village is set to go live on Nov. 20. In the virtual village, teens girls who have created avatars in There.com can gather to socialize, attend events like fashion shows and dance parties, and shop for both virtual and real world clothing and accessories.

There.com officials said that the world’s younger demographics, and its social emphasis made it a strong fit with the teen-oriented magazine. “There.com is all about fashion, socialization and shared activities, which aligns perfectly with the main interests of CosmoGirl’s readers.”said Michael Wilson, CEO of Makena Technologies, producer of There.com.

3. Ad Age
Seventeen, Dove Team for ‘Body Peace Project’
By Nat Ives

http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=121009

Seventeen magazine may still be pretty obsessed with appearance -- recent issues delivered dozens of tips on manicures, shopping and flawless skin -- but under Editor in Chief Ann Shoket, the November issue is introducing a "Seventeen Body Peace Project" to help girls appreciate their shapes and stop stressing over the beauty industry's preferred standards. And she's getting some help from Unilever's Dove, a brand whose most recent viral video chronicles the damaging effect of unrealistic media images on young girls.

As part of the effort, Seventeen and Dove's Self Esteem-Fund commissioned a body-image survey that found 51% of teen girls said they knew they should like their bodies better -- but frequently faltered under cultural pressure to be thinner.

Shutdowns in industry The move comes at an interesting juncture for magazines aimed at young women -- and no less so for marketing beauty. Although the underlying causes are varied, magazines aimed at teens and young women have seen their ranks thin over the past few years, with shutdowns at titles such as Elle Girl, YM, Teen People and Jane. Some beauty advertisers, particularly Dove, have meanwhile begun trying to reach those consumers who may have felt put down by ads starring traditional, completely unrealistic models.
