Memo Pad: I am Woman
By Irin Carmon
10/11/07
http://www.wwd.com/memopad/article/119479

Informal and slightly self-effacing, Rachael Ray's contributions to a Newsweek "Women & Leadership" conference panel earlier this week were flawlessly on-brand: "Part of our success is that we're an everyman brand, and I just happen to be a woman," she said, adding, "We're aiming to please — I'm essentially still a waitress." To which moderator and ABC anchor Cynthia McFadden responded, "But the tips are better." (Around $6 million in 2006, according to Forbes).

But the easygoing nature of the Rachael Ray brand, she said, also helps facilitate work-life balance. In what she called "the blessing of being the boss," she has decreed that "everyone can bring their kids to work, be it a dog, a cat or a human." Of course, it might help that the Manhattan offices of Every Day with Rachael Ray are far removed from the Pleasantville, N.Y., headquarters of parent Reader's Digest Association.

The upbeat mood continued through a second panel on women in politics which, despite being made up of top aides for Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Fred Thompson, plus Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan, was exceptionally agreeable. Liz Cheney, daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, even cited Nancy Pelosi as a role model — twice. And when Cheney said she was going to agree with the two liberal panelists on a point, moderator Anna Quindlen gasped, "Call the AP!"

New Look
By Keith J. Kelly

BusinessWeek on Friday unveils a sweeping redesign that Editor-in-Chief Steve Adler has been working on for the better part of 18 months. Everything from the logo on the cover to the inside sections are being changed.

"We just closed our first page of the new redesign," said Adler when reached early yesterday evening. "I think it is a very substantial redesign in the way the magazine is organized." The Upfront section will open with The Business Week and offer short summaries of the major events of the week. It will also offer news, but will not break out global news as a separate section.

The magazine for the first time will be organized so that it has a big feature well to run longer stories with more artwork. Rob Hunter, who was a senior editor of finance, has been promoted to assistant managing editor of features to oversee that department.

Glamour Editor to Address Ex-Staffer's Racial Remark
By Jason Fell

An off-color comment about African American hairstyles made by a Glamour associate editor a few months ago is proving to be a headache that won’t go away for editor-in-chief Cindi Leive. So much so that Leive is planning to address the touchy subject during a roundtable discussion to be featured in an upcoming issue of the magazine.

“These are deep, really personal issues for a lot of women, so it doesn't surprise me at all that this discussion has had legs,” Leive wrote in an e-mail to Folio:. “Ironically, they're the sorts of issues we cover all the time in Glamour, so that's what we've decided to do here: hold a forum to get well-known women—and our own readers—talking about issues of beauty, identity and race, and then run the results in the magazine.”

Early this summer, the junior-level editor accepted an invitation to speak to a group of women about corporate fashion at New York City law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

Radar Copies Infamous Vanity Fair Cover for Politics Issue
By Dylan Stableford
10/9/07
http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=8144&prmID=1

n what might make even the most liberal reader blush, the cover of Radar magazine’s November “Politics” issue—its fifth since the magazine was re-relaunched in February—will feature a bare-bottomed Barack Obama, nude Hillary Clinton and open-shirted, ear-nibbling Rudy Giuliani.

The cover was inspired by the now-infamous March 2006 Vanity Fair "Hollywood Issue" cover featuring designer Tom Ford, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley in a sultry (if creepy) Annie Leibowitz photo shoot. (The accompanying video of the nude photo shoot, posted on Vanity Fair’s Web site, generated heaps of buzz and 350,000 views a day.)

"With a series of very real crises unfolding around the world, one might assume that the American public would have lost its taste for homegrown theatrics," Radar editor Maer Roshan writes in his editor's letter. "But from its Survivor-like setup ('A black guy, a woman, and a Mormon duke it out for our nation's highest office!') to its canned media controversies, the 2008 campaign seems to have taken a turn down Sunset Boulevard."

The Atlantic to Get (More) Political in 2008
By Dylan Stableford
10/10/07
http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=8143&prmID=1

Two years after chairman David Bradley, facing mounting costs, moved the 148-year-old Atlantic Monthly from Boston to D.C., the magazine is ramping up its political content, events—and staff—in advance of the 2008 presidential election.

In December, the magazine—celebrating its 150th anniversary next month—will publish the first cover story written by Andrew Sullivan, the popular conservative blogger whom the Atlantic lured away from Time magazine earlier this year. Sullivan’s cover subject? Barack Obama.

In January, the magazine will publish a “State of the Union” cover package that looks at America “after Iraq” and homeward at the issues that have been overshadowed by the war. “It’s, ’What is America ignoring at home?’” says publisher Elizabeth Baker Keffer.
