******* BTW, Ed doesn't endorse the advertisement you see above. It's just what happens when you use a free e-newsletter service.
******* As GQ marks a half century, the magazine has come across a slew of interesting tidbits about the rich and famous before they were so. Take Bruce Weber who, before he was a renowned photographer, was an up-and-coming model who landed on the cover of GQ Scene, a short-lived spin-off of GQ in the late Sixties that proclaimed it was "For Teen Men Only." (Its editor, Jack Haber, ended up editing the magazine proper for over a decade.) At 21, Weber appeared on the cover of the Winter 1967-68 issue, "goofily adorable in a Herman's Hermits way," as David Kamp put it in a story in GQ's October issue, and was introduced to the readers as follows: "Bruce came to New York a year ago from Greensburg, Pa., to study acting. After deciding to pay for his classes by modeling, Bruce shook up veteran models by winning jobs in five TV commercials within three months." GQ staff writer Alex Pappademas unearthed a copy of the forgotten offshoot on eBay in anticipation of the anniversary issue, but GQ didn't end up running an image of it. Lest the Mod do and double-heart tattoo on Weber's hand ($1 for a sheet of 10 at 80 Wooster Street, GQ Scene helpfully notes in its credits) be lost to posterity, the cover is seen here.

Departures has decided to forgo traditional channels of advertising, such as direct mail to the masses and placing advertisements in trade publications — except in select cases. Instead, the American Express Publishing Corp. title has made a "significant investment" in developing what it is calling a brand book, delivered to presidents, C-level executives, specific prospects and clients. The book, which is printed on thick paper stock, is in a large-size format, slightly larger than W magazine. Ed Ventimiglia, vice president and publisher, said the book is meant to convey the magazine's message as a brand unto itself (mixed in with pictures of expensive items). A second printing of the brand book, with a few modifications, is in the works and will be mailed in early 2008. The magazine just closed its November/December issue and pages are up 18.4 percent to 254.5 from the same issue one year ago. New advertisers this year include Tom Ford, Nicole Farhi and Bergdorf Goodman.

It's often completely inexplicable what certain stars of varying wattage are doing at some magazine events, but Alan Cumming did earn his keep at Cond? Nast Traveler's 20th anniversary party Wednesday evening. This was despite his having given the magazine's fashion staff some extra work the day before — his desire to wear a kilt to the Reader's Choice Awards ceremony had them scrambling for a black sporran, the traditional hanging leather pouch. (One was eventually found in Buffalo, overnighted, and cut down by the local shoe man.) At the awards, each presenter told a travel story — recounted to and faithfully reconstituted by the evening's scriptwriter — and Cumming's was about drunkenly missing a flight from New York to London, two massive trunks in tow. He'd been doing a magazine interview in a hotel, he said, and had gotten behind schedule. Pressed by co-presenter Debra Messing (no slouch on the social scene herself), Cumming conceded that he was late because "Dammit, I had sex with the journalist in my hotel room. Are you satisfied now?" No further details were given, but let the guessing games begin.

THE mood at the recent Rolling Stone reunion in San Francisco wasn't entirely hostile toward the magazine's founder, Jann Wenner. "The weekend was not about Jann," Sarah Lazin, one of the three organizers, told Page Six. "It was about us, and the time and the place and what we all accomplished and how happy we were to have been a part of something so special." The 150 staffers from Rolling Stone's first 10 years (1967-1977) did not turn up their noses at the cases of bubbly Wenner sent. "I understand that every bottle of champagne was finished," said Roger Black, another organizer. But there were several prominent no-shows besides Wenner, including Annie Leibovitz, Cameron Crowe, Joe Eszterhas, Timothy Crouse, Terry McDonnell and Joe Armstrong, the magazine's publisher, president and COO until 1977. Black said the "Biggest Sellout Award" that went to Wenner was a joke: "Some of us may have quit because we thought Jann was selling out, or at least diverting his attention from the editorial side of Rolling Stone, but I think most now realize he just saw the '80s coming earlier than we did."

Wenner Media chairman Jann Wenner today named Brad Wieners as editor of Men’s Journal. He fills a spot that became vacant in August when Jim Kaminsky left for the top editor spot at rival Maxim after eight months in the position. That transition followed Maxim’s sale earlier this year, along with Blender and now-defunct Stuff magazines, to private equity group Quadrangle Capital Partners, which installed ex-Wenner exec Kent Brownridge as CEO of the company, now called Alpha Media Group. Wieners has been the executive editor of Men’s Journal since December 2005 and was acting editor for the monthly’s December issue. He also has worked at Outside, Wired and National Geographic Adventure. MORE ONLINE

The South has grown like kudzu as people flock there for its plentiful jobs and affordability. Yet at Time Inc.’s iconic lifestyle title Southern Living, the pace of change has been closer to that of slow-cooked barbecue. The title hasn’t seen a major redesign in its 41-year history, said John Floyd Jr., vp, editor in chief and a 30-year vet of Time Inc.’s Southern Progress unit, which encompasses Southern Living. But recent worrisome numbers have the magazine plotting a substantial editorial and graphic overhaul come next spring. Through November of this year, ad pages declined 0.7 percent to 1,245 versus the same period in 2006, per Mediaweek Monitor. While circulation has held steady at 2.8 million, the title’s median reader age has crept up to 50.3, per the spring MRI, from 48.1 in 2002. MORE ONLINE

For years, parenting magazines have presented themselves as sources of expert information for beleaguered new parents. Now, two of the category’s biggest titles are shifting their focus to recognize the importance moms place on what their peers think. With its November issue, out Oct. 16, Bonnier Corp.’s Parenting births a redesign that puts a greater emphasis on the voice of the mom. Building on the “Mom-tested” seal of approval it launched in 2003 and the “Mom Tips” scattered through its pages, the monthly will incorporate more reader-generated content, including toy and entertainment reviews. As part of an effort to better sync the magazine with its Web site (set to relaunch later this fall), Parenting’s front-of-book Mom Exchange department now is sprinkled with reader-submitted photos and results of online polls. “Our research shows what’s really important to moms is tips from other moms,” explained Janet Chan, vp, editor in chief. Newsweek will this morning unveil a redesigned magazine and Web site with a “more is more” approach—and a shift away from the stripped-down, bloggy immediacy that has marked the resigns of countless other magazines. “Some people in our business believe print should emulate the Internet, filling pages with short, Weblike bites of information,” writes editor Jon Meacham in his editor’s note. “We disagree. There is a simple idea behind the changes in the issue of Newsweek you are holding: we are betting that you want to read more, not less.” “Other media outlets believe you just want things quick and easy,” Meacham continues. “We think you will make the time to read pieces that repay the effort.” MORE ONLINE
