******* STAFFING UP Alpha Media Group is bulking up its management ranks with two hires. Joseph Mangione has been named chief marketing officer, coming out of retirement to take the job. Mangione will be responsible for integrated marketing efforts for Maxim and Blender's print and online properties, as well as its event promotions division, Alpha Productions. Mangione retired a year ago from his position as president, sales and marketing for media company CanWest Global Communications Corp. Before that, he was executive vice president, integrated sales at Time Warner and has worked for Meredith Corp., Billboard Publications and Playboy Enterprises. Additionally, Alpha Media chief executive Kent Brownridge — who himself came out of retirement to take over the former Dennis Publishing this summer — has swapped executives with his old boss Jann Wenner. Sean Fenlon, formerly Wenner's director of manufacturing services, joined Alpha Media last week as director of manufacturing and distribution, while his predecessor, Lou Terracciano, went to Wenner to fill Fenlon's position. MORE ONLINE HOME AWAY Just a day after the kickoff of House & Garden's largest event in years, its first ever Design Week, the magazine's vice president and publisher Joseph Lagani left to explore the World Wide Web. Lagani will become vice president, general manager of GlamLiving.com, the design, travel and entertainment segment of online female-centric portal Glam Media. Lagani helped turn ad pages around at the Cond? Nast shelter title, and even earned the Turnaround of the Year award from Cond? Nast chief executive officer Charles Townsend at the annual publisher's meeting in February. (Through September, pages have slipped by 1 percent, to 624 pages.) Lagani gave notice of his departure Wednesday morning to Townsend and House & Garden editor in chief Dominique Browning. He will assume his new position Nov. 1 and report to Glam Media chairman and ceo Samir Arora. GlamLiving.com launched Wednesday. A replacement for Lagani has not been named.

Despite a green cultural movement—real or perceived—and a spate of so-called “green issues,” magazines have largely failed to convert to recycled paper. There are about 100 magazines currently printing on recycled paper, says Frank Locantore, director of the Magazine Paper Project for Co-Op America. Locantore says cost, misconceptions about cost and general ignorance of publishers have contributed to the lack of conversion. Even a large number of “green issues” aren’t printed on sustainable paper (see: Vanity Fair’s 2006 “green issue” for a case study on just how disappointing not following through can be to the green community), something Locantore says is the ultimate irony. And even when they do, most magazine publishers don’t continue the practice for their non-green issues. Nonetheless, he says, there’s a momentum building for magazines to continue to demand green alternatives from their paper suppliers. “When we first started looking into using recycled paper, we weren’t exactly impressed,” says Kristine Kern, general manager of Mansueto Ventures. “You could see the garbage—literally, you could see the garbage in the paper.” Now, Mansueto’s magazines—Fast Company and Inc.—are printed on 100-percent recycled paper that is 85 percent post-consumer waste. And Kern says the company pays less than it would to print on regular paper. “Price and quality don’t have to be sacrificed to make the switch,” says Locantore. MORE ONLINE

Google has damped down speculation that it will extend its Google Book Search platform to include magazines with an ISSN number. Technical difficulties with digitising magazines and a lack of existing archives were cited as the main reasons. Digitising magazines was first discussed at a Google Book Search publishers meeting, when the search giant floated the idea of digitising titles with a International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), Jens Redmer, Director Google Book Search in Europe described the move as "logical". But Redmar said technical issues such as paper quality were making the project look like a non-starter and he said that book information was of a higher value to searchers. "Magazines describe a trend at the time. A historic book has more valuable information than a historic magazine." Periodical publishers have also failed to create archives of their content, which Redmar sees as essential to a successful search tool. Redmar said Google will instead focus on book search. "We want to index more books, the majority of the information in the world is still outside of the internet."

TIME Managing Editor Rick Stengel once again is shuffling the deck among the magazine's top brass now that Priscilla Painton, one of his three deputy editors, has opted out. Painton was the highest-ranking woman ever in the history of Time magazine. And she said the decision to step away - which was announced to staffers yesterday in an internal memo from Stengel - was a voluntary one. She'll leave by the end of the year. "I went to Rick months ago and said I wanted to reinvent myself," said Painton, who is 49 years old and has been at Time magazine for just under 20 years. "Since he had done exactly the same thing, he was very supportive." Stengel had left Time to become the CEO of the Constitution Center in Philadelphia before Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief John Huey recruited him back to the top spot last spring. Painton said she is going to travel to Italy, where she was born, and then to Paris, where she spent much of her youth. Her father, Frederick Painton, was one of the founding editors of Time Europe. Stengel replaced Jim Kelly in May 2006 after Time Inc. launched a fairly public search mainly outside the company. Because Stengel had been away from the magazine for several years, he opted to keep the magazine's upper echelon. MORE ONLINE

Magazine ad pages slipped 2.3 percent in the third quarter over the same period a year ago, reflecting softness in automotive and over-the-counter drugs pages, according to Publishers Information Bureau. Rate-card reported revenue for the third quarter rose 4.2 percent during the same period, per PIB, a service of Magazine Publishers of America. Automotive continued to be one of the big decliners in the quarter, with pages down 10.2 percent. Once the No. 1 category for magazines, automotive now occupies fifth place in terms of ad revenue. Other major categories that were off were Drugs & Remedies (down 3.6 percent), Home Furnishings & Supplies (down 12.4 percent) and Technology (down 18.9 percent). Showing gains were Toiletries & Cosmetics, now the No. 1 category; pages rose 5.3 percent in the quarter. Also up were Food and Food Products (up 12.8 percent) and Retail (up 3.5 percent). Year to date through September, ad pages slipped 1 percent, with rate-card reported revenue up 5.6 percent.
