******* PENTHOUSE Editor-in-Chief Mark Healy is out, heading over to GQ from whence he came. Although Penthouse President and Publisher Diane Silberstein had high praise for Healy, the magazine's owners were apparently less pleased about his decision. "I never got escorted out of a building before," said Healy, who earlier this week gave his bosses two weeks' notice but yesterday was walked out of Penthouse's offices. MORE ONLINE

COSMO'S hottest New York Bachelor of 2007, Patrick Clark, says ABC has already contacted him about being the next star on "The Bachelor." "It would be interesting; I'm going to see what they have to say," Clark said. "I'm supposed to fly out and meet with them soon." The former New York Stock Exchange trader said he's also gotten lots of modeling offers since being picked by Cosmo.

Q. What do you hope to accomplish as president of ASME before your two-year term ends in May? A. We have a unique opportunity to provide richer, more current service than we have before. I would like to position ASME for its next few years by providing more continuing education for editors—more workshops, seminars. One thing ASME can and will do more of is speak on behalf of editors. And speak loudly about why magazines are a great industry to get into, and stand up for our core values. Q. With magazines scrapping for ad dollars and broadcast offering more ad integration, are editors being asked to push ad/edit boundaries? A. I think some are, and the best and strongest editors are standing up for their readers’ trust. Readers enjoy the ads—that’s a strong story for advertisers to be in magazines, and a strong reason for editors not to get pushed into product placement. MORE ONLINE

The day print readership is measured electronically, like other media, may not be too far off. At least two tests are underway that use RFID—radio frequency identification—to track how readers flip through the pages of a magazine. Conceivably, RFID could replace the current—and much-maligned—system of measuring magazine audience with one akin to that used to track TV and radio audience. But for now, frustration over print measurement continues to run high. Last spring, Readership.com, a service that would have provided continuous measurement of magazines on an issue-by-issue basis, threw in the towel after the industry failed to support it. MORE ONLINE

After just a year as the top editor of Penthouse, Mark Healy quit after clashing with his bosses over the direction of the magazine. He’s returning to Cond? Nast’s GQ, where he served as articles editor before going to Penthouse. President and publisher Diane Silberstein said Barbara Rice Thompson, managing editor, would act as editor in chief until a replacement for Healy is named, while Peter Bloch, a features editor, was named deputy editor. Healy’s short-lived stint began at a time when the monthly was transitioning away from a hard-core men’s lifestyle magazine. That process began two years ago under Silberstein, who was hired in January 2006 by co-owners Marc Bell and Daniel Staton. (They bought the bankrupt magazine in 2004 after founder Bob Guccione lost control of it.) MORE ONLINE

"Are you ready," asked Taylor Strecker, Cosmo Radio's morning show host (Cosmo radio? Come again?) "for the best buffet you've ever eaten?" The room full of eager girls in short dresses and high heels hooted and hollered in agreement, ready for the forthcoming display of "man-deliciousness." Strecker introduced the 50 heartthrobs, Cosmo's hottest bachelors of 2007, to a cacauphonous chorus of "Yeah baby's" "Ow Ow's" and, of course, "Take it OFF!!!" at Marquee last night. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that out of a state as large as Texas, the chosen bachelor and I actually went to high school together! Carl Besetzny is still a southern gentleman, and he came right over to me to catch up on mutual friends and reminisce about our Golden Eagle alma mater. For the record, he's much cuter than he was in high school, and his picture in the mag doesn't due his boyish good looks justice. He said he was having a great time (his first trip to New York!), and giggled when he talked about the girls being all over him. GMA producer/correspondent Andrea Canning sent someone over because she wanted to meet him, and she shyly gave him her business card. Aren't reporters supposed to be brave? MORE ONLINE

From up on high, Cathie Black delivers Basic Black, a thoughtful book on achieving success and balance in life. That's high as in from the 43rd floor of Manhattan's glittery new Hearst Tower, where Black, 63, oversees 19 magazines in the USA and 200 publications internationally—including Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Esquire and Harper's Bazaar—as president of Hearst Magazines. Geographically speaking and career-wise, Black is above the fray. But the tone of her guide for getting ahead is far from condescending. Rather than preaching down to readers, Black aims to build them up with advice she wishes that she had received when she started out. There was the incident, for example, when she was an inexperienced sales assistant at the now-defunct Holiday magazine. She accidentally left the original of her freshly updated r?sum? in the copy machine for a senior executive to discover. MORE ONLINE

While American Vogue came up with exactly zero black women in fashion editorial in their October issue, at least Italian Vogue did better in September—they had one! Just one. Except turns out she wasn't a model, as the New York Times assumed. An article last Sunday about the fashion industry's reticence to use black models referred incorrectly to a black woman in a maid's outfit pictured in the September issue of Italian Vogue. She was, in fact, a maid at the hotel where the pictures were taken, and was included, the Vogue photographer said, because of her attractiveness and her ability to underscore the pictures' theme of a stereotypical rich white woman who hires ethnic servants; the black woman was not a model dressed as a maid.
