******* The managing editor of Portfolio.com, Chris Jones, revealed his departure to staff on Wednesday, a sign that Portfolio's personnel woes aren't limited to print. Jones, who gave notice to editor in chief Joanne Lipman a month ago, had told friends he was unhappy. Edward Felsenthal, formerly a deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, was brought in to consult, including on the Web site, though Lipman wrote WWD in an e-mail late Wednesday that "Chris made his decision long before Edward arrived, and there's no connection between the two events." Jones also reportedly clashed with Lipman about hiring choices, according to three sources close to the magazine, though he did win battles on hiring former Daily News gossip columnist Lloyd Grove and former Radar and WWD reporter Jeff Bercovici. Lipman denied this. Relations also were strained with his staff, according to three sources. Jones, who has agreed to stay on through the end of next month as a consultant, did not return calls for comment. Mark Stein, the senior news editor of the Web site, will be interim deputy editor until a replacement is found. A spokeswoman for the magazine said Web traffic has met or exceeded expectations, and provided figures showing a growth of monthly unique visitors from around 300,000 in the spring to just over a million estimated in October. Still, more changes may be afoot: high-level discussion is said to be under way about divesting Lipman of oversight of the Web site, with a possible new reporting structure to Portfolio.com's general manager, Ari Brandt, on the business side. (Like Jones, Brandt came from Yahoo!, where such reporting structures are in place.) The magazine's spokeswoman denied there was any such plan in the works.

Cond? Nast has decided to commit every one of its titles, from Glamour to Vanity Fair, to the Audit Bureau of Circulations' Rapid Report program, bringing one of the last holdouts into a system intended to update magazines' traditional practice of reporting circulation figures only twice a year. The move follows the decision last month by Time Inc., the country's largest publisher, to join Rapid Report in full. Cond? didn't have much to say about its decision to sign up its 24 titles for the service, only confirming it before declining to elaborate. But together, the two biggest magazine companies' final acquiescence to the fledgling system, which has been straining for critical mass since summer 2006, means that providing nearly real-time sales figures has become essentially ratified as the new industry standard. That's a big deal for magazines, which have looked increasingly archaic as the internet seemed to promise instant results and even TV began receiving more precise ratings. MORE ONLINE

How healthy is the magazine industry? In terms of new launches, it depends who’s counting. The number of U.S. and Canadian magazines increased from 14,178 to 15,672—roughly 10 percent—between 2002 and 2007, according to the National Directory of Magazines 2008 released this week. (The numbers appear to be less than those of the Magazine Publishers of America, which count 1,883 new magazines between 2002 and 2006. Bridal magazines increased 96 percent (from 69 to 135), the fastest growing segment of the magazine market, according to the directory. Regional magazines—the largest number in any category—increased 51 percent (754 to 1138) during the five year period. “Niche magazines are becoming more targeted. New bridal magazines, for example, are pitched to different areas of the country, ethnic groups, celebrities, and even to men,” says publisher Trish Hagood. “Home” magazines (up 57 percent), “ethnic” (52 percent), “baby” magazines (44 percent) and celebrity titles (40 percent) all showed healthy increases according to the directory. Sid Evans quit as editor in chief of Bonnier Corp.’s Field & Stream to become chief editor of Garden & Gun, a Southern high-end lifestyle magazine. The spot has been vacant since founding editor John Wilson left after the first issue, which published in April. Evans also was editorial director of Saltwater Sportsman. Prior to his current position, he was editor of Wenner Media’s Men’s Journal. A search for a new editor at Field & Stream is underway. Owned by Charleston, S.C.-based Evening Post Publishing Company, the 159,000 mostly controlled circulation Garden & Gun is published by former New Yorker and Mirabella publisher Rebecca Darwin. Garden & Gun publishes four issues this year and plans to publish six in 2008.

Magazine subscriptions can be easy to start, but surprisingly difficult to stop. Blame it on a publishing industry practice known as automatic renewal: The publisher simply extends the subscription once the initial order period ends. The subscriber is billed for another year or more of magazines without a specific opportunity to say yes or no. Dolores Doccola of Staten Island ignored several billing statements from a magazine publisher because she thought they were solicitations to renew her service. Then she started getting letters from a debt collection agency. "When I got bold enough to call, I was told my subscription had been automatically renewed," she explained. Whether she had adequate opportunity to decline a continuation of her subscription depends on your point of view. The publisher sent renewal notices. But Doccola assumed she had to respond to extend her subscription. She didn't realize doing nothing was the same as saying yes.

There's a new networking platform on the web today, but don't worry about having to stock a whole new profile with lists of your favorite books or photos from your friend's recent batch party at Lucky Cheng's. Instead, Inc. magazine's IncBizNet.com is intended to serve as a user-driven directory and forum for describing and connecting small businesses. "We have to be very practical in figuring out how these individuals will use this for their business, because it's not fun and games," said Ed Sussman, president of Mansueto Digital. MORE ONLINE
