******* Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia recently walked away from a potential acquisition, but, looking forward, executives insist the company is highly interested in acquiring Internet companies that would provide "quality traffic" and brands that have a lot of consumer interest (which, presumably, could mean anything, given Martha Stewart's recent tie-up with Costco to do a line of fresh and frozen foods). But don't expect the company to bulk up its magazine business: During a call Friday to report the company's third-quarter earnings, Susan Lyne, president and chief executive officer, claimed MSLO isn't focused on acquiring print publications. She also didn't address the outlook for the magazine that is reportedly being tested for an older demographic. The company is in "stage one" of developing Marthapedia, although a decision has not been made on whether the Web site will actually launch. Billed as a site that would offer "millions of pieces of information" on anything from organizing a pantry to how to properly wash clothing, Marthapedia's future, or lack thereof, will be determined during the fourth quarter, added Lyne. The company's net loss decreased substantially in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, to $4.4 million from $25.2 million, while total revenues rose 13.4 percent to $69.3 million. The third-quarter results were driven mainly by ad revenue growth in publishing and revenue from the company's book deal with Clarkson Potter. Howard Hochhauser, chief financial officer, addressed the current low stock price, at $12.35 a share, noting the company is not currently planning to buy back stock, but may consider it next year. 2. New York Post
In one of the first big editorial shake-ups in the Mary Berner era at Reader's Digest Association, Frank Lalli has been named international editor-in-chief, responsible for all non-U.S. editions of the digest-size Readers Digest magazine. He replaces Conrad Kiechel, 51, who will leave early next year after overseeing the launch of the Chinese edition of Reader's Digest, the company's 52nd overseas edition. Ripplewood Holdings in February acquired the then-publicly traded RDA and took it private. As part of that takeover, Berner, the former boss at Fairchild, was installed as CEO. MORE ONLINE
3. MediaWeek
Newsweek, having redesigned the magazine in print and online and shaken up its executive ranks, is now planning to cut its rate base. The planned 16 percent cut, confirmed by a media buyer, would take the 3.1 million guaranteed circulation down to 2.6 million. It would follow other recent rate base cut moves by mass-circ magazines including TV Guide and Reader’s Digest and most notably, direct rival Time magazine, which cut its rate base 19 percent to 3.25 million at the start of the year. "A Newsweek representative would not confirm that it was cutting its rate base." The rate base move was not unexpected: In an interview earlier this month, Greg Osberg, executive vp and worldwide publisher, said he was contemplating a rate base cut. He said Newsweek would not follow Time magazine’s move to shift its on-sale date to Friday from Monday, however, explaining that going on sale later hasn’t hurt Newsweek’s presence on Sunday morning news talk shows. 4. MediaWeek
Magazine publishers have heard it all before, and speakers at the American Magazine Conference last week only reinforced it: They are behind on integrated marketing, they need to catch up to consumers’ online habits and their Web sites are dwarfed online by the big foots of the digital world. Yet at the same time, magazine companies need to up their game online or risk failing to attract or keep the talent they need to do so. Whether they left on their own or were pushed, a handful of prominent executives have exited the industry this year. One of them, magazine vet Joe Lagani, just last month left Cond? Nast’s House & Garden, where he was vp, publisher, to join Glam Media, a collection of lifestyle and fashion Web sites. MORE ONLINE
5. New York Times
THIS month, the Turner Classic Movies cable network is presenting the movie choices of 30 “guest programmers” like Alec Baldwin, Martha Stewart, Donald Trump, Gore Vidal and even Kermit the Frog. Next month, six Hearst magazines will invite readers to program their own film festivals, with help from Netflix and Philips Electronics North America. The promotion, with a budget estimated at $2 million, will appear in the December issues of Country Living, Esquire, House Beautiful, O: The Oprah Magazine, Redbook and SmartMoney. Cards inserted into the issues — made to look like the red envelopes in which Netflix delivers DVDs to subscribers — will direct readers to six Web sites, which are to start this week. MORE ONLINE

Journalists often call publicists “flacks” and publicists call journalists “hacks,” though rarely in earshot of one another. But the gloves came off last week after Chris Anderson, the executive editor of Wired magazine, chided “lazy flacks” who deluge him with news releases “because they can’t be bothered to find out who on my staff, if anyone, might actually be interested in what they’re pitching.” “I’ve had it,” Mr. Anderson wrote on his blog on Oct. 29. “I get more than 300 e-mails a day and my problem isn’t spam. ... it’s P.R. people.” After picking the fight, he then made it personal, posting the addresses of 329 unsolicited e-mail messages he had received and telling the senders that he had permanently blocked them. 7. Folio:
Absolute magazine—the New York-based ultra-luxury bimonthly that launched in 2005, subsequently burned through a reported $10 million in financing only to be shuttered in early 2006 until it was purchased that June by Hour Media—will close up shop once again unless it finds a buyer, Folio: has learned. “We will likely cease publishing if we don't find a buyer,” Hour Media publisher John Balardo wrote in an e-mail to Folio: today. The flashy magazine, the brainchild of former New York magazine and Details editor Andrew Essex, seemed troubled from the start. V&S Vin & Spirit, the Swedish government-owned company that owns Absolut Vodka, had taken the original owners to task over copyright. There was also rumored trouble with a South African publisher of the same name, as well as potential conflicts with existing Absolute magazines in New Zealand, Madrid and the U.K. MORE ONLINE
