Memo Pad: Calm Before the Storm

Time Inc. isn't going anywhere, at least, for now. Jeff Bewkes, the newly elected chief executive officer of Time Warner, acknowledged during Wednesday's third-quarter earnings call that there are questions surrounding the company's future. However, he firmly told analysts, "We're not going to telegraph our decisions in advance." As for the publishing division's performance as of Sept. 30, total revenues of $1.2 billion for the quarter were flat, despite a decrease in domestic print ad revenues (which included the impact of closing Life and Teen People). Operating income increased 13 percent to $251 million. Time Inc. represents approximately 10 percent of the group's overall business.

FAT TARGETS: TIME & AOL
By Peter Lauria

Time Warner's third-quarter results underscored why CEO-designate Jeff Bewkes is expected to take a long, hard look at AOL and Time Inc. - those units were the only two of the company's five divisions that didn't report revenue growth.

AOL continued to feel pain from its transition to an advertising-based business from a subscriber-driven one. Though revenue from advertising rose 13 percent to $61 million, it could not offset an $820 million decline in subscription revenue.

Overall revenue at AOL, which now has 10 million subscribers or one-third of its total when it merged with Time Warner, plunged 38 percent to $1.2 billion.

How Are Those Shuttered Magazines? Web Sites Doing?
By Dylan Stableford
11/08/07
http://www.nypost.com/seven/10312007/business/newsweek_is_the_news.htm?page=0

As the American Magazine Conference adjourned yesterday here, the group was treated to a farewell luncheon that bestowed top cover of the year honors in five categories, plus a best in show that went to The New Yorker for its Sept. 11, 2006, tightrope walker above the New York City skyline. It was The New Yorker's second win in the cover derby. The magazine also won for best news cover with an April 9 issue showing IRS tax forms folded to resemble tanks and jets.

The best celebrity cover went to Wired for its Stephen Colbert "How To" issue, which shows Colbert with a hacksaw, explaining such things as how to hack into an iPod. Media Ink's favorite was the cover of Life, which showed actor Patrick Dempsey next to the round belly of his wife Jillian, who at the time was pregnant with twins. The cover was a finalist in the celebrity category.

Best fashion cover went to a stunning February 2007 issue of Harper's Bazaar, which showed Drew Barrymore on the rooftop of Rockefeller Center. Best service cover went to O at Home for its winter 2006 issue, which featured a "before" and "after" gatefold on getting organized.

Oy Vey! Another Magazine Launch?
By Dylan Stableford
11/7/07
http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=8268

With cash to burn and ?modern Jewish women? in his crosshairs, ex-advertising executive Daniel Zimerman is set to launch Jewish Living next week, a ?thoroughly modern magazine? that aims to ?celebrate Jewish home, family and cultural life.?

The bimonthly magazine, boasting ?How-To? features on Chanukah parties, Friday night dinners and something entitled ?Stop Coddling Your Kids,? will launch with a rate base of 100,000?part newsstand, part pre-launch subscriptions sold to Jewish associations?targeting Jewish professional women aged 25-34 with a median household income of over $125,000.

That older demographic, Zimerman says, will differentiate Jewish Living from its closest competitor, Heeb. ?We?re not creating anything that is earth-shatteringly innovative,? Zimerman tells Folio:. ?Heeb?I love it, I?ve been a subscriber since day one?talks to a younger demographic, the 18-to-25-year-old. Our reader is slightly older; stylistically, we?re different.? Jewish Living, in other words, is more Martha than Matisyahu.
