Al Gore looms as Time's Person of the Year
By Jon Friedman

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/al-gore-times-person-year/story.aspx?guid=%7B5FEEFAE8%2DB39A%2D41A5%2D9DC6%2D58914AF53111%7D

After attending Time's discussion of who should be the magazine's Person of the Year, I reached two conclusions: 1. Al Gore looks like a shoo-in. 2. Time is blowing a major journalistic and marketing opportunity by bestowing only one award.

Gore, 59, looms as a timely and popular selection. Through his respected documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," and his presentations, he has sparked interest in global warming and the environment. He has jump-started America's "green" movement more significantly than any other individual. That alone is noteworthy.

But over the past few years, Gore has come a long way. In 2006, the puffy ex-presidential hopeful looked like little more than a prime candidate for a Weight Watchers commercial. Then, in only the past nine months, he has accepted an Oscar and a Nobel Peace Prize.

Memo Pad: In and Out
By Stephanie D. Smith

Mary Berner made yet another high-level change at Reader's Digest Association, poaching Peggy Northrop, editor in chief of More since 2004, to help revamp the aging flagship title. Northrop, who replaces Jackie Leo as Reader's Digest's editor in chief, will also sit on RDA's executive committee, and will report directly to Berner. She'll also face a longer commute — Northrop lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., while Reader's Digest is based in Pleasantville, N.Y.

A day before the announcement, Northrop attended a party at The Modern to celebrate More fashion columnist Charla Krupp's new book. Staffers seemed to have no idea at the party that Northrop would reveal her departure the next morning, and were shocked by the news.

According to a source close to the situation, Berner tried to lure Northrop over to RDA for months, but Northrop declined. Finally, Berner offered her what is said to be double her salary at Meredith Corp., and Northrop agreed. "She's a great talent with a loyal following by both readers and staffers," said Eva Dillon, Reader's Digest president and group publisher.

Memo Pad: U.K. HOUSE & GARDEN IN BLOOM (3rd item)
By Samantha Conti
11/12/07
http://wwd.com/memopad/article/120180?page=1

The British edition of House & Garden certainly has more life than its U.S. counterpart, which will close with the December issue. The London-based Cond? Nast Publications Ltd. said it plans to continue publishing the magazine — not only that, but it's soon to launch in Greece. "We are in the 60th year of the British edition of House & Garden and it's our strongest year to date, with both circulation and ad revenue up," said Nicholas Coleridge, managing director at Cond? Nast Publications Ltd. He added: "The home interest sector in the U.K. is very different to that of the States — it is a sector that is prospering here, and the British edition of the magazine is equally prospering as never before. In addition, later this month, we are launching House & Garden in Greece — further evidence of the strength of the brand and the market sector in Europe." The monthly circulation of U.K. House & Garden for the January-June period was 141,782. The magazine also increased its U.K. newsstand sales 5.3 percent in the same period. Ad pages at the title increased 9.8 percent year-on-year to 1,237 pages from 1,127.

Ticket sales will only be accepted by junior-level editors and recent graduates (defined as two years from your undergraduate or graduate school graduation date). Tickets can be purchased at the Ed2010 happy hour at The Crooked Knife between 7 p.m. and 8:29 p.m. Tickets are $3 at the event. No one person can buy more than 10 tickets to each raffle. On each ticket, you must write your full name, job title (if not employed, say "unemployed") and email address. If you do not respond within 7 days to the e-mail announcing that you won, another winner will be drawn at random in your place. Ed2010 will send out an introductory e-mail to you and the EIC, and exchange contact information, but will not make scheduling arrangements—that is the winner's responsibility. Meetings are valid for 6 months after winning. In case of unforeseen circumstances, Ed2010 reserves the right to substitute the EIC with whom the winner will meet. (But, seriously, that's not going to happen. David and Denise are on board! We just have to cover our butts.)
