******* That its announced December cessation got an inordinate amount of press attention (including a lengthy November 6 article in The Wall Street Journal) says something about the 1901 launch's rich history in being the second oldest shelter magazine (after 1896 launch House Beautiful) and the second oldest magazine at Cond? Nast. In 1911, Cond? Nast himself bought House & Garden to pair its home design with the fashion design of 1892 launch Vogue, and from the books and exhibitions (including a September 2001 centennial celebration/remembrance at New York's Sotheby's), the two monthlies complemented each other nicely during most of the 20th century. But, as was well-reported, H&G was first folded by CN chairman (since 1959) S.I. New- house, Jr., and 1988-1994 president Bernie Laser in April 1993 to make way for the just-acquired Architectural Digest. Then, last Monday (November 5), 11 years after Newhouse and 1994-2004 president Steve Florio revived the monthly, it was folded again by Newhouse and president (since January 2004) Chuck Townsend to make room for the expansion of Vogue Living and help the three-year-old Domino. House & Garden, R.I.P. (Again)? In retrospect, however, H&G's second fate was sealed with Florio's January 2003 dismissal of 1998-2003 publisher Brenda Saget Darling. The Elle Decor alumna was highly respected in the design marketplace (now-Cond? Nast Portfolio president David Carey, who was the H&G relaunch publisher before moving to The New Yorker in June 1998, says that "I learned a great deal from Brenda") and put the monthly over 1,000 ad pages in 2000/2001/2002. Not good enough for Florio, who replaced her with Lori Burgess, who did a good job at Seventeen/Mademoiselle and is now doing a good job at Jason Binn's Niche Media. But Burgess, who quit as Elle publisher after just seven months to join H&G, had minimal experience with home advertisers and it showed in the magazine falling to 867 ad pages in 2003 and 831 in 2004. It was in August of that year when Townsend replaced Burgess with Joe Lagani, the former Country Home/Traditional Home (Meredith) publishing director who, ironically, hired Darling to be TH publisher in July 2003. Job for Lagani was a two-steps-backward-for-one-step-forward rehabilitation project, and last year's +15.32% ad-page differential (to 845.50) won Lagani Turnaround Publisher of the Year recognition from Townsend. This year, H&G finished up fractionally, and Lagani and his staff upped the marketing ante with the October 15-21 Design Week in New York. But 2007 was still a far cry from the heady years under Darling, and after Lagani quit on October 17 to launch the GLAMLIVING.COM unit of GLAM.COM, Newhouse and Townsend concluded that the future was in Vogue Living and Domino, and rather invest in a first-class publisher who would equal the caliber of Lagani (or, for that matter, Darling), they threw in the towel. To her roles as Hollywood actress, UN goodwill ambassador and mother, Angelina Jolie can now add another - writer for the Economist. The high-minded economic and political weekly has secured a sprinkling of stardust for The World in 2008, which is published tomorrow and contains predictions for next year. Jolie's piece on accountability for the atrocities in Darfur sits alongside contributions from several presidents, an exiled god-king, the head of the United Nations and other political heavyweights. In Houston a couple of weeks ago, Mark Lipinski was mobbed by cheering, screaming, laughing women. Some wanted to hug him. Some wanted his autograph. And some wanted to learn where they could get one of those beefcake ironing board covers, the ones with a photo of a hunky guy wearing only a towel, a towel that vanishes when -- well, here's how Lipinski described it in his magazine, which is called Mark Lipinski's Quilter's Home: "When you iron over said man, and get him hot (so to speak), his towel totally disappears and -- oh, baby, oh-oh-oh! -- he's naked! Your husband's going to wonder what wonderful thing he's done that's keeping you so happy in the laundry room (hee hee hee)!" Who is Mark Lipinski? MORE ONLINE
4. The Sacramento Bee
Three reasons why it would be inadvisable ? nay, lame ? to begin a story about our cultural fascination with lists by creating a list about it: 1. It's a cynical and clich?d device to draw in readers. 2. Some people wouldn't appreciate the winking "meta" quality of the exercise. MORE ONLINE

ROUND 'EM UP: The December issue of Maxim will introduce someone old and something new. Albert "A.J." Baime, who worked with editorial director Jim Kaminsky at Maxim in the late Nineties, will return as an executive editor. Baime was articles editor at Playboy for four years and before that was executive editor at Boston magazine. Baime will replace Michael Dolan, who resigned and left the magazine after closing the December issue, which includes a new look, new sections and more mature humor. GOOFING OFF: Hollywood insider Jason Schwartzman is an Outsider now. Fresh from promoting his latest film, "The Darjeeling Limited," the quirky actor can now be seen modeling L.A. brand Band of Outsiders. Band founder and designer Scott Sternberg explained that after Schwartzman wore a Band of Outsiders tuxedo at the London premiere of "Darjeeling," he asked the actor to model his holiday collection for the fashion brand's Web site and look book. "Jason said 'Yes,' with no celebrity bulls--t," recalled Sternberg, one of this year's nominees for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, the winners of which will be revealed Thursday night at 7th on Sale. Sternberg based the capsule collection on the Robert Redford film "Downhill Racer" and shot the mini campaign at a Hollywood prop house, where Schwartzman made good use of such stylish junk as deer antlers and ski boots, as well as a real bulldog named Arrow. "It was just like, 'Jason, goof off,'" Sternberg said, "and he'd grab a prop and act like a goof. That was the day ? tons of fun." WOMEN, THEN MEN: Can a sales rep who spent 13 years at Interview selling ad pages to high-end fashion brands switch gears to hawk pages to Puma and Speedo? Apparently not. Victoria Fuller, who joined Women's Health in August, has left the magazine to take the same job at Men's Vogue. Fuller served as vice president/associate publisher of Interview and was fashion director at both Vanity Fair and Esquire before jumping to Women's Health, but sources close to the magazine say her luxury background was too highbrow for the Rodale monthly. At Men's Vogue, she replaces David Miller, who moved to The New Yorker as associate publisher. SPLITTING HEIRS: While the British press went hog wild with coverage when Prince William dumped Kate Middleton last spring, they have been a little more subdued when it comes to the love trials of Prince Harry and longtime girlfriend Chelsy Davy. On Sunday, news broke in the News of the World, Sunday Mirror, and Mail on Sunday that Davy ? craving her privacy and fed up with the Harry's partying antics ? had dumped him, but the reporting was straightforward and lacking nasty asides. "Prince Harry has been ditched by girlfriend," the News of the World led with, saying the "pretty blonde" had also grown tired of Harry's "boozy, playboy lifestyle," and had been upset by his decision to attend the Rugby World Cup Final instead of her 22nd birthday celebrations. At the same time, the Sunday Mirror tracked the prince's subsequent alleged $4,000 booze binge in a London nightclub. Unlike the William/Kate split, where snide columns about Middleton's breeding and middle-class background appeared, the focus of venom ? if any ? lay with Harry's partying lifestyle and womanizing ways.
