Memo Pad: Monkey in the Middle

Portfolio has taken considerable heat for its cover strategies — eschewing portraits, experimenting with landscapes and, most recently, a concept cover. This week will bring another one for dissection, this time featuring a photograph of a chimpanzee taking a bite out of the Financial Times, sources said, pegged to a Michael Lewis story. The photographer, Jill Greenberg, also shot the November cover, and has been shooting primates for years, as seen in her book "Monkey Portraits." As to whether there was any significance to using the Financial Times instead of the bigger and better known (in the U.S.) Wall Street Journal — where Portfolio editor in chief Joanne Lipman and many of her staff made their careers — a spokeswoman declined to comment, nor would she discuss or confirm the cover photo.

Memo Pad: Where Are They Now?

"The Fashionista Diaries" ended in September, but the gossip surrounding the show lives on. Last weekend's issue of Page Six Magazine had a piece on the unabashed head of Seventh House PR, Mandie Erickson, called, "Is this the most hated woman in New York?" And Fashionista.com recently blogged about the whereabouts of former Seventh House intern Bridget Helene. It turns out Helene worked as a temp for Vogue, for 7th on Sale, but that was only for a week and now she's no longer at the magazine, said a spokesman. Rachel Jacoby, who had started as an intern at Jane and then Cosmogirl, has a piece in the Dec./Jan. issue of the magazine, "I fell apart behind the cameras," but has moved on to In Style, working as an editorial assistant to editor In Style special issues Rosie Amodio.

Janjay Sherman appears to be the only intern who actually still works for the same company she started with, Flirt! Cosmetics. She is now the international publicity assistant for BeautyBank. Tina Patient, who was not offered a job at Flirt!, has landed at Bratskeir & Co. in the fragrance division, and Laurie Hugill, who also was not offered a job at Seventh House, is now at Alison Brod Public Relations. Hugill replaced Queens native Nicole Amendolare, who left the show during production but now is doing some plus-size modeling and working with her boyfriend on their own fashion line. Finally, the lone boy, Andrew Kanakis, recently started his own business and is developing a line of jewelry. A spokeswoman for Soapnet said a second season has not been confirmed yet, making reference to the writers' strike. Wait, isn't this a reality TV show?

Tango, a two-year-old lifestyle quarterly covering love and relationships, will join a small but growing number of magazines that are folding their print publication but trying to maintain an online presence.

Tango, an independent that claimed a rate base of 250,000, will go digital after its winter 2007 issue, with plans to add more interactivity and rich media to the site, the title announced. Editor in chief Carrie Sloan will oversee the site. Tango also plans to publish special themed publications, starting with the Couple of the Year issue, also its winter 2007 issue.

A handful of magazine companies have tried to keep their defunct magazines’ Web sites going after shuttering their print editions, among them Hachette Filipacchi Media’s Elle Girl and Premiere, Emap’s FHM, Time Inc.’s Life and Meredith Corp.’s Child.

A. In conjunction with the rate-base growth, we’re increasing our frequency from eight to 10 times a year.

Q. How has the ad mix changed?

A. We’re getting travel and financial services on top of our bread-and-butter accounts like wellness and food and beverage. We have Olay, Buick, Prudential and Eddie Bauer that are new in this quarter.

Q. How do these advertisers fit in with your magazine’s mission?

A. These clients’ positioning is very much in line with wellness, balanced living and sustainability. Their message may be about inspired living, or a greener message.

Ex-Print Editors Urge Mags to Create Web IDs
By Lucia Moses

Mark Golin, editor of People.com, looks back with some humor on the early days of his Web career in the late ’90s. He had proudly created some new features for Rodale’s Prevention.com, only to discover people weren’t clicking on them. “They were just beautiful looking,” he recalled. “God help anyone trying to figure out how to use it.”

For Golin, who spent much of his career in magazines including stints as editor of Maxim and Details before making the jump to the digital space seven years ago, the episode made him realize the complexity of building a successful site, with all the visual cues that are needed to keep users engaged and entertained.

“One of the immediate things that hit me is how much more complex production online can be,” Golin said. “Content packages are planned months in advance. You almost start to think about a game of three-dimensional chess.”

Price Hikes Hurt In Touch, L&S Newsstand Sales
By Lucia Moses
11/19/07
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003674075

The once-seemingly unstoppable celebrity weekly category is showing more signs its growth is peaking. It started with Wenner Media’s Us Weekly and Northern & Shell’s OK! missing rate bases on multiple issues in the first half of ’07, followed by American Media’s Star cutting its rate base to 1.35 million in July, from 1.5 million.

Now, in the two weeks since its price increased by $1 to $2.99, In Touch Weekly’s single-copy sales were at least 25 percent below their 1.3 million average for the first half of 2007, according to preliminary sales estimates provided by three industry sources. At sibling Bauer Publishing title Life & Style Weekly, which also raised its price by $1 to $2.99, single-copy sales were down at least 10 percent from its first-half average sales of 744,294, per the sources’ estimates.

To be fair, two weeks is a small amount of time to determine whether or not a price increase has a long-term impact on sales, which can be affected by a host of factors. Fall is generally a slow time for celebrity weekly newsstand sales, for example. According to an industry rule of thumb, a title can expect a percentage decline in newsstand sales equal to half the cover price’s percentage increase, however.

African-American Magazine Segment ‘Up and Healthy’
By Jason Fell
11/16/07 http://www.foliomag.com/viewmedia.asp?prmMID=8295&prmID=1

While some African-America magazines have struggled this year to bolster their bottom lines, the segment as a whole is healthy and has raked in an estimated $420 million in advertising revenues, according to Carlos Pelay, president of advertising research company the Media Economics Group. Pelay spoke today during the first session of Target Marketing News’ fifth annual African-American Magazine Summit. More than 40 people from the African-American magazine segment attended.

The nearly 30 titles that Pelay tracks through his “BlackMagazineMonitor” service (he doesn’t track every magazine in the segment) brought in an estimated $280 million in advertising revenues. “The market may not be growing as quickly as it once was, but it is up and is healthy,” said Pelay. “If you really want to know what’s going on in this industry you have to look past just the top five or six black and African-American magazines [tracked by PIB] to see the more targeted advertising activity.”

Not surprisingly, segment giants Essence, Vibe and Ebony topped Pelay’s list of ad revenue generators. At $70.09 million, Essence’s ad revenues are up 19.3 percent this year over last year. Ironically, the other biggest gainer is the now-shuttered Vibe Vixen with $9.6 million, up nearly 25 percent.
