L.A. Ed Book Club
*******

Over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, as you’re trying to get away from your overly affectionate aunt and your unfairly gifted cousin (Harvard-grad rocket scientist; we know, we know), L.A. Ed offers you a foolproof excuse — you have to hunker down and read Falling Out of Fashion by Karen Yampolsky. It’s our next book club assignment, and Ed’ll meet you after the holidays to discuss it. Questions? E-mail Sree.Roy@bobit.com.

BTW, Ed doesn't endorse the random non-Ed advertisement you see at the top of the newsletter. It's just what happens when you use a free e-newsletter service.

Google Magazine?

An interesting patent was granted to Google on November 8, titled “Customization of Content and Advertisements in Publications.”

A number of blogs picked it up and speculated that Google may soon begin to offer users the ability to create customized, printed magazines from Internet content. And print ads included in the magazine would be customized, too.

The speculation doesn’t appear to be far off. The patent, which was filed in May, 2006, points out the flaws in existing print magazines:

Memo Pad
By Stephanie D. Smith, Diana Ryu, and Robert Murphy

ANGELS IN AMERICA: Kanye West has a bone to pick with Harper’s Bazaar, according to his comments in GQ’s “Men of the Year” issue. The rapper declares his distaste for the Hearst fashion magazine after it reported that a mural painted on a ceiling in West’s Los Angeles home was of himself. “That pissed me off so bad,” West tells GQ writer Chris Heath. “That made me so mad. Because who would want to hang out with a guy with an 8-foot picture of an angel of himself?”

PARTY FACE: Allure magazine feted its December cover girl, Fergie, Friday night with a 30-person dinner at Hollywood’s Green Door for guests Tom Ford, Jerry O’Connell and Fergie’s beau, Josh Duhamel. It was a big weekend for the songstress, who won an American Music Award for favorite female pop or rock artist, as well as for Allure editor in chief Linda Wells, who was hosting her second soiree of the week. On Wednesday, she threw the first annual Allure’s Face Party at Bar Nineteen 12 in The Beverly Hills Hotel, drawing January Jones, Maggie Grace, Rachel Goodwin, Molly Stern and Sarah Michelle Gellar, among others. This latest incarnation of the magazine’s Young Hollywood party was more intimate than past bashes at Buffalo Club and focused on new talent. While some editors eschew watching bubblegum TV shows and movies in search of new faces, Wells pointed out: “We’re media junkies. It’s a combination of knowing who’s out there and looking into our crystal ball.” Fergie, dressed in black Dolce & Gabbana, said, “I’ve wanted to be in this magazine for a long time. It’s very prestigious and so is the group of women who have been in it. It’s nice getting to be one of [them].” The admiration is apparently mutual. “[Fergie’s] abs are an astonishment in themselves!” said Wells.

NEW MEDIA BOSS: It looks like LVMH Mo?t Hennessy Louis Vuitton has a new boss for its media division. Nicolas Beytout, director of French daily Le Figaro, is expected to be named president of LVMH’s DI Group division, according to sources. DI Group includes the Radio Classique radio station, Investir investment weekly and art monthly Connaissance des Arts. Eventually it also will include financial daily Les Echos, which LVMH is in the process of buying from Britain’s Pearson PLC as it divests financial daily La Tribune. The hiring of Beytout, who helped invigorate Le Figaro during his tenure, is widely seen as a gambit by LVMH to assuage fears that its ownership of Les Echos would threaten editorial freedom, a charge the paper has leveled against the luxury behemoth.

EXECUTIVE CHANGES: Advertising Age publisher Scott Donaton was named publisher of Entertainment Weekly. He replaces Dave Morris, who left the company in October after a reorganization that combined the People Group and Entertainment Weekly under one umbrella, with People publisher Paul Caine overseeing the group as president. Donaton had worked at Ad Age since 1989, first on the editorial side — where he eventually became editor — then on the business side as associate publisher/editorial director and later publisher. Donaton will take his new position Dec. 10 and will report to Caine.

Full Court Press: Spiro Agnew’s Revenge
By Charles Kaiser
November 19, 2007
http://radaronline.com/features/2007/11/media_matters_karl_rove_hillary_clinton_campaignnewsweek_01.php

When Newsweek made Karl Rove one of its columnists last week (along with Markos (Daily Kos) Moulitsas for balance), there was one big question: Could the number of new readers attracted by this fancy new hire possibly exceed the hordes of freshly canceled subscriptions?

The early betting was heavily against any circulation increase. And the odds didn't get better with Rove's first column. His biggest scoop was about the "full-length vanity mirror" found in the West Wing office he inherited from Hillary—and the fact that she had denied putting the mirror there (twice). This, you see, is Rove's idea of "a small but telling story: She is tough, persistent, and forgets nothing." Rove's hiring (which the New York Times didn't even bother to report) makes him the latest in a long and distinguished line of politicos turned pundits who owe their big journalism careers almost entirely to the flowery rhetoric of Spiro T. Agnew.

For latecomers to this never-ending melodrama, Agnew was Richard Nixon's first vice president—the one whose main qualification for the job was this: "No assassin in his right mind would kill me,'' Nixon explained. ''They know if they did that they would wind up with Agnew!" Once Agnew started his blistering attacks on the commie-pinko-liberal press, he became a celebrity in his own right. He called reporters "an effete corps of impudent snobs" and television commentators ''a tiny fraternity of privileged men elected by no one and enjoying a monopoly sanctioned and licensed by the government.''

Entertainment Weekly Steals Ad Age Publisher
By Keith J. Kelly
November 20, 2007
http://www.nypost.com/seven/11202007/business/entertainment_weekly_steals_ad_age_publi_86731.htm

Entertainment Weekly raided Crain Communications' flagship weekly Advertising Age to snag Publisher Scott Donaton as the new publisher of Time Inc.-owned EW.

Donaton becomes the fifth publisher at the embattled title in five years, and arrives when the magazine appears to be heading into at least its second consecutive year of an advertising slide.

Though the magazine is still believed to have made about $50 million through the Nov. 16 issue, EW is down 157 ad pages, or 10.5 percent, year to date.

Jackie Leo's Leaving "Reader's Digest" Was "Graceful"...
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

Editor-in-chief's (since September 2001) November 9 termination by Reader's Digest Association president/ceo (since March 2007) Mary Berner was sudden, because Leo was scheduled to fly to Nice, France, with just-anointed RD International editor-in-chief Frank Lalli (see last week's min) for planning sessions with overseas colleagues. But it was hardly a total surprise, because, Leo tells min, "There had been signals. I knew my circumstance because I was hired by [Berner 1998-2005 predecessor] Tom Ryder. Mary made a decision, frankly, that I would have made if I were in her shoes, and she is doing a yeoman's job. I also think the world of [successor/More editor-in-chief since April 2004] Peggy Northrop. She can make RD fly." (When told by min, Northrop [page 3] said "I am very touched and I have always had the deepest respect for Jackie.")

Leo made many magazines and multimedia fly in--over the past 21 years--her prestigious Child/Family Circle/Good Morning America/Consumer Reports/Meredith Interactive Services/RD executive career. At RD, it was Leo who made all the editorial original (it historically was condensed articles from other publications, which, in the Internet Age, is antiquated), and she engineered the redesign accompanying the January 2008 release that is accompanied by a 10-million-to-8-million rate-base cut. Leo, who is also a past American Society of Magazine Editors president (ditto Lalli), is taking a break --probably through year-end--but she certainly will be heard from again.

Time Inc.'s Squires: Push Is on for More Stickiness
By Lucia Moses
November 19, 2007
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003674964

While acknowledging its magazines’ online sites are unmatched in scale by other popular Web sites, Time Inc. is trying to build its digital brands’ stickiness through new features and content.

John Squires, executive vp, Time Inc., said that while he’d like the company’s sites to “crawl up in terms of scale,” he’s happy with their rank in engagement and revenue per user. Speaking today at a Time Inc. Digital Showcase, he noted that according to Time Inc.’s own ranking, the company’s sites come in 15th among media companies in terms of time spent per visitor.

At the same time, Squires emphasized the push to get people to stay on the sites longer. “Everything we’re doing, we’re trying to put through this lens [of] how long can we hold people for.”
