******* OVER TO WIRED Another early hire is leaving Portfolio — senior writer Daniel Roth. But at least he's staying within Cond? Nast: Roth will join Wired in the same position. Staffers found out about his departure late Wednesday afternoon in a brief e-mail circulated to the staff by managing editor Blaise Zerega. Roth will start his new position around Christmas.Roth was poached by Portfolio editor in chief Joanne Lipman from Fortune, where he had worked since 1998 alongside Katrina Brooker, who was also recruited by Lipman to join Portfolio during its launch. Brooker quit to return to Fortune in September, but Roth stayed, despite conversations with Time Inc. editor in chief John Huey and Fortune managing editor Andy Serwer about his return to Time Inc. Roth was said to have a good working relationship with Lipman, but sources close to the magazine say Portfolio's tumultuous working environment — with its constant media scrutiny and frequent staff departures that have led to a steady increase in the number of staffers from Lipman's old stomping grounds at The Wall Street Journal became too much for Roth. Since the summer, editors and writers from the magazine who have severed ties include Brooker, deputy editor Jim Impoco, ex-New York Times writer Kurt Eichenwald and ex-Men's Journal editor in chief Michael Caruso, who served as contributing editor at large under a yearlong contract. In return, ex-Journal staffers Hilary Stout, Scot Paltrow, Daniel Golden and Peter Waldman have joined the masthead. SAFE DOES SELL Let other celebrity magazines cover the recent dramas surrounding Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. People StyleWatch publisher Michelle Myers claims it's benefiting by being the "safe" celebrity title as brands like Cover Girl sign on. In 2008, the Time Inc. magazine will continue on at 10 times a year, but a rate base increase will begin in February, growing by 100,000 copies to 650,000. The December-January issue closed at 52 ad pages, up slightly over last year, and StyleWatch is selling an average of 532,000 copies at the newsstand, said Myers. "Fashion, beauty and retail is our core, but we are also working on consumer electronics and technology, such as LG, which was new in December," she said. MORE ONLINE

Fortune magazine will have a fresh look with its December 10 issue-the magazine's first redesign in a decade. The issue is set to hit newsstands Monday. Some of the new elements include: expanded editorial pillars such as Technology, Management, Investing and Luxury, all with a cast of dedicated specific columnists; color-coded editorial navigation; a redesigned table of contents; new typefaces including Whitman, Benton and Popular; and a "touched up" cover logo, a Fortune|Money Group spokesperson says. "The cover has really been evolving over the last six months into the sleeker look we have now."

Three top-level executives were laid off Monday from the Johnson Publishing Company, publishers of Ebony and Jet magazines. The departure of those executives--Jeff Burns, Ebony senior vice president and associate publisher; Ebony senior vice president and Midwest advertising director Dennis Boston; and Barbara Rudd, Ebony vice president and Western advertising director--was confirmed by the publisher. On the heels of the layoffs, Nijole S. Yutkowitz was named vice president and group advertising director for Ebony and Jet. Yutkowitz formerly served as national advertising director for Jet. "We've decided to merge our advertising leadership to be more cohesive, especially to meet the changing landscape of the advertising world," Johnson spokesperson Wendy Parks told FOLIO:, noting that she does not expect any additional layoffs. When asked about the circumstances surrounding the individual layoffs, Parks declined to comment. Burns, who was reached by phone Tuesday evening, said he was "shocked" by his sudden termination, and indicated that the three layoffs may indeed be connected. He said the decision came down from president and CEO Linda Johnson Rice, daughter of company founder John H. Johnson. MORE ONLINE

In the publishing world, it's not Black Friday or the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting that officially kicks off the holiday season, but rather Cond? Nast Chairman S.I. Newhouse Jr.'s annual bash at the Four Seasons Restaurant for his top editors, publishers and executives. Often seen as a bellwether of who's in or out among the Nasties, many in publishing pay particularly close attention to who's seated near Newhouse. This year, of course, all anyone wanted to know was where Joanne Lipman, the embattled editor-in-chief of Cond? Nast Portfolio, was seated. And in what can only be seen as a signal from the taciturn Newhouse that she still has his support, Lipman was seated at his elbow at the main table - which this year was table No. 4. But there was treachery in the ranks! Though Lipman was smiling - with some describing her as positively giddy over her plumb spot at the right hand of Si - she was apparently unaware that her superstar writer, Dan Roth, who had been poached from Fortune with much fanfare, was at that very moment getting ready to jump ship to Wired. By the time she returned from the lunch, it was a done deal. Wired Editor Chris Anderson, who didn't even have that great a seat at table No. 3, had swooped in and poached Roth to be his star writer. he Wall Street Journal has decided to expand the scope of Pursuits, the glossy magazine it plans to introduce next September, by adding distribution in Europe and Asia. In addition to the 800,000 copies planned for Journal subscribers in the United States, Pursuits is expected to be inserted in about 80,000 copies each of the Europe and Asia editions, for a total circulation of 960,000. "Because of the robust advertiser response, we have made the decision to launch Pursuits as a global publication that will appear in all editions of the Journal worldwide," the company told employees in a memo from L. Gordon Crovitz, the Journal's publisher, and Michael F. Rooney, chief revenue officer at the paper's parent, Dow Jones & Co. In an interview, Mr. Rooney seemed unsure why Pursuits was originally conceived for just the U.S. "We just started to think about it domestically to begin with," he said. "We discussed it in the hallways, talking about clients here domestically." MORE ONLINE

Esquire magazine and high-definition program channel MOJO have struck a partnership to jointly produce and distribute content for TV and online under the title “Take It From Esquire.” The content will debut this week as interstitial shorts airing between programs in MOJO’s prime time programming schedule as well as on the Web sites of both MOJO and Esquire. Video segments, up to 45-seconds in length, are being produced by MOJO and will be based on topics from Esquire’s The Guide section. The section provides various style tips, such as how to how grill the perfect steak or advice on what the essential wardrobe needs are for upscale, fashion-conscious men, the core target of both partners. As part of the agreement, MOJO will buy ads in Esquire to promote the pair’s venture as well as other programs on the channel, said Kevin O’Malley, vp, publisher, Esquire. MORE ONLINE

A cigarette maker that once used print advertising to ask smokers to walk a mile for a popular brand is walking away from the medium, at least for next year. The R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, a unit of Reynolds American, disclosed this week that it would run no ads in 2008 in consumer magazines and newspapers for cigarette brands like Camel, Winston, Pall Mall and American Spirit. Instead, Reynolds said it would concentrate its marketing in three areas that already make up the bulk of its marketing spending: stores, bars and nightclubs; Web sites; and direct mail. MORE ONLINE
