New Republic Disavows Iraq Diarist's Reports
By Howard Kurtz
December 4, 2007
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/03/AR2007120301978.html

After nearly five months of mounting criticism, the New Republic yesterday disavowed reports about petty wartime cruelty in Iraq, saying the magazine had lost faith in the Army private who wrote them.

"We cannot be confident that the events in his pieces occurred in exactly the manner that he described them," Editor Franklin Foer wrote of the dispatches by Scott Thomas Beauchamp. "Without that essential confidence, we cannot stand by these stories."

Foer said in an interview that he kept waiting for Army investigative documents—some promised by Beauchamp—that never arrived. "I hope our investigation and honest admissions of failure will reassure our readers that we're committed to the highest standards," he said.

Page Six: Get Some Armor
By Richard Johnson

Everyone has to worry when Dick Cheney has a rifle in his hands—but Kurt Andersen should be extra careful after what he said about the veep's wife. In his latest New York magazine column, Andersen makes a curious reference to Lynne Cheney's "extravagant flirtations with a friend of mine over the years." But when we called the co-founder of Spy for more details, he clammed up. "That's as far as I'm going to go with it," Andersen said yesterday. "It didn't fall into the category of canoodling, but it was extraordinary, given that it was Lynne Cheney." Her office had no comment.

Memo Pad

LAST WORDS: Did Evel Knievel underestimate his own resilience? Knievel, who died Friday at age 69, has been slipping away for years, resuscitating himself after stunts gone bad, liver failure and a rare lung disease, but the stuntman may have predicted his death too soon to both Maxim and Vanity Fair. Knievel told Maxim's Pat Jordan: "This may be the last interview I ever do," in his feature in the December issue. But to Vanity Fair contributor and historian Douglas Brinkley, who had been working on a book about extreme sports and a feature to run in the February issue, the stuntman said: "You'll be my last interview. No more after these." On Maxim.com, the site bills Jordan's story as "some of the last words of an American legend." Vanity Fair bills it as Knievel's "last major interview."

BACK TO BASICS: Hoping to capitalize on the growth of foodie culture, Bon App?tit is remaking itself as a younger, more accessible title. Starting with the January issue, it will introduce a new logo featuring a lowercase font with a rotating color for the "o" and accent mark. "Think of it in fashion terms: We've simply changed and freshened our lipstick, or, perhaps, traded in our pair of sensible shoes for something a little more stylish," editor in chief Barbara Fairchild writes in the editor's letter.

The last time Bon App?tit changed its logo was 17 years ago. Now, with the help of design director Matthew Lenning, hired from GQ in the spring, it's pushing its "accessibility" and its "sophisticated but not intimidating" qualities. Bon App?tit's Web site will also be relaunched, though the timing is still being determined.

Economist says crisis may pull in readers
By Katie Allen
December 4, 2007
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2007/dec/04/economist

The publisher of the Economist is upbeat about weathering an economic downturn and even hopes it can drive up readership of the news magazine.

Posting a 25% jump in half-year profits yesterday, the group behind the weekly title, as well as information and conference businesses and politics-focused newspapers, said it was confident of attracting new readers.

Volatile financial markets, a weak US dollar and the move by advertisers from print to online all made the future harder than usual to call, it said, but the group flagged up strong momentum and loyal readers. Print sales are rising.

Hearst Magazines' Michael Clinton Bestows His Tower Awards
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

It is a bit out of the Cond? Nast playbook, where top magazine performances have been recognized annually since 1995, just after Steve Florio became president (through January 2004) and Clinton was executive vp (through August 1997, before he joined Hearst Magazines as executive vp/chief marketing officer). But unlike at CN, where top publishers are recognized each January at a corporate retreat in Florida, Clinton's inaugural November 15 Tower Awards were presented to magazines, and entire sales staffs were on hand to share in the glory. Here were his selections:

2007 Magazine of the Year: Redbook, which has had the most dramatic revenue growth of any Hearst title this year.

2007 Comeback of the Year: Harper's Bazaar, which improved its revenues the greatest (ad-page differential rose from +9.29%/2006-versus-2005 to +17.11%/2007- versus-2006).
