******* GERMAN media giant Bauer may be charting a course for a rebound from its rough year with a bid for London-based publisher Emap. Hearst says it has pulled out of the running to acquire the media group, which includes British titles such as Heat and FHM. As a result, Bauer - which publishes In Touch and the floundering Life & Style in the US - has been given additional time to negotiate an exclusive deal. MORE ONLINE

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has set its sights on dominating the arts and crafts business, but there could be competition brewing from Meredith Corp. and its powerful Better Homes & Gardens brand. A clash over scrapbooks, wrapping supplies and stationery may seem unlikely for a pair of major media companies that operate on TV, in magazines and online. But the better your media brand gets, the more tempting those licensing deals become -- especially when everything in the actual media business is so tough. It's also precisely the unglamorous, even overlooked quality of the craft business that provides a relatively easy opening. MORE ONLINE

One month after House & Garden's closing, editor in chief Dominique Browning and her former design director, Wendy Goodman, will work together again, this time on a story for Departures. The article, which is slated for the March/April issue, is on Philippe Starck's redesign of the lobby of the Hotel Meurice in Paris, in collaboration with his daughter, painter Ara Starck. Browning and Departures editor in chief Richard David Story first met decades ago, as senior editors at Esquire. Until leaving New York magazine for House & Garden in February, Goodman had been a contributing editor to Departures, and she has now returned to both positions. "My last day at H&G was Friday, and I was at New York magazine on Monday," said Goodman, who is on the road to promote her book on designer Tony Duquette. (It's already sold out its first printing, she said.) Both will join Story in Paris within the next few days. "It's very interesting to get on the other side of the desk," Browning said. She also continues to write for The New York Times Book Review and plans another book. But she won't exclusively be writing about home design: "I feel like I had the best job in design magazines — I loved my job so much — but I could not go and do this somewhere else. I definitely want to write about many other things including travel, stories that are going on around the city." MORE ONLINE
