******* Does the fashion world really need another modeling competition to rescue young women from the ranks of gangly teenage obscurity? The editors of Visionaire magazine think so, expressing disappointment with all those reality TV model searches they claim only produce commercial talent. So the editors are holding their own contest, called "V A Model! Supreme Management Model Search 2007." The winner will be revealed in January and is expected to walk in many "big-name shows" one month later, during fashion week, said executive editor Julie Anne Quay. She is a judge for the contest, along with V editor in chief (and Harper's Bazaar creative director) Stephen Gan, Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa and international casting director Russell Marsh. Happily, V won't put its readers through yet another televised walk-off. Instead, they'll use the Internet to keep readers informed of developments. Already the field has been narrowed from roughly 500 to five, who went through intensive go-sees. The winner will receive a wardrobe from Calvin Klein Collection, a three-year contract with Supreme Management and a fashion story in V's spring issue, out in March. Quay expects the contest to become an annual affair, and she added that V Man already is planning a male model search for spring, partnering with Wilhelmina Models. MORE ONLINE

Adam Moss is calling in some reinforcements for New York magazine's second annual wellness issue: former House & Garden editor in chief Dominique Browning. "The theme is to explore pockets of silence and peace around the city," said Browning, who was about to leave for Paris for a Departures story. "It is really fun to be in that kind of energetic news environment," she added. The issue goes on sale the third week of January, so a newsroom pace will be in order. The lineup hasn't been finalized, but Browning said it would include both regular New York writers and staff and a few House & Garden vets. MORE ONLINE

With all of the focus on the business magazine big guns like Fortune, BusinessWeek and Cond? Nast Portfolio, it's easy to forget that there are a slew of other business-themed magazines out there. Here's a look at a few. Black Enterprise is heading for another banner year in 2008 on the coattails of African-American superstars, from Barack Obama to LeBron James. The magazine - already up a hefty 19 percent in subscriptions in the first half of the year - is closing in on the 1 million circulation target in one of publishing's great success stories, paralleling those of its subjects. Its annual list of big winners under 40 was so hot the mag had to make up four separate covers (and quadruple sales of those prized cover position ads). Black Enterprise has finished its crisp makeover and flies it to new heights with fast (for a magazine) turnarounds on politics, business and news, e.g., the $11.6 million award to Anucha Browne Sanders, who won a sexual harassment settlement from Knicks Coach Isiah Thomas. It's a guide for the rich and soon-to-be-rich; the upscale ads prove it. Bloomberg Markets profiles Jim Simons, founder of Renaissance Technologies, the world's largest hedge fund firm with $35.4 billion in assets. At a time when other hedge fund pioneers have long ago stopped managing other people's money, Simons, 69, is adding funds and accumulating assets. He's also stockpiling brainy talent. A third of the employees working at Renaissance's main campus in East Setauket, NY, have Ph.Ds. Elsewhere, the mag examines how the Russian government is looking to reinvigorate the country's reputation as a power in science and technology by pumping $60 billion into space exploration and other high-tech industries. Russia plans to bankroll the initiative over the next decade with its rising oil and gas revenues. Also inside is a look at the Brandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. The so-called "St. Andrews on the Pacific," which is now rated higher than legendary courses like California's Pebble Beach, has emerged as one of the top golf destinations in the US by emulating traditional golf courses in Scotland. Aiming to mimic the success of upscale city magazine publishers like Modern Luxury and Niche Media Holdings, the founders of Uptown today plan to announce they will grow the title, targeting affluent black consumers. They plan to replicate Uptown, now published in four cities—including New York and Chicago—and in seven more cities—including Los Angeles and Miami—over the next three years. Backed by Leo Hindery-led InterMedia Partners, Uptown co-founders Len Burnett (late of Vibe) and Brett Wright seek to grow their titles’ annual frequency to 10 by 2010 from four in 2007. They have applied for Audit Bureau of Circulations membership with a 125,000 rate base, which they intend to grow to 300,000 by 2011. The model calls for about 70 percent of the content to be the same across the titles, the rest being market-specific. Similarly, the advertising revenue is designed to be 85 percent national, 15 percent local. MORE ONLINE

Some media buyers remain suspicious of the value of public-place copies, questioning everything from the levels of audience generated, their appropriateness for the location and wantedness. Now, a new survey funded by the magazine industry reveals results aimed at bolstering buyers’ confidence in that circulation source. The survey was done by mail this past fall by McPheters & Co. and funded by Bonnier Corp., BusinessWeek, CMS, Cond? Nast, Hachette Filipacchi Media, Meredith Corp., Magazine Publishers of America, Time Inc., Primedia, Reader’s Digest and TV Guide. Representatives of more than 1,800 doctor’s offices, barbershops, beauty salons and gym locations took part. More than 90 percent of the locations surveyed agreed that public-place copies received are put out for customers or patients to read and are appropriate to their interests and demographic. Lenny Dykstra had a busy last week. He was named in the Mitchell report into performance enhancing drugs in baseball as someone who received steroids. He was also helping to start a magazine. Mr. Dykstra, a star outfielder for the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies in the 1980s and 1990s, has teamed up with Doubledown Media to produce The Players Club, a magazine aimed at helping players manage their millions. The idea behind the magazine is this: professional athletes are often scorned for their out-size contracts and lifestyles. But once their playing days are over, more than a few of them have trouble finding new jobs, struggle to keep their families together and find that they have spent their savings. MORE ONLINE

Alex Wagner, Fader's editor-in-chief, is leaving her post to head up Not On Our Watch, an anti-genocide non-profit led by the actors George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. Wagner's last day at Fader, a well-regarded, coffee table-worthy music magazine known as much for its parties as its prose, was Friday. A successor has been chosen but will not be named until after the new year, according to Fader publisher Andy Cohn. Wagner's four-year tenure at the magazine culminated with the Fader's 50th issue, which the company recently celebrated with a concert in New York. MORE ONLINE

Throwing money at a magazine for the moneyed isn’t enough. Six months after a redesign and a new tagline, the Sacramento magazine Prosper is closing. There’s still a chance the magazine will continue exist in online, but in the meantime, nearly 20 employees are getting laid off. Doesn’t this feel like the build-up in some cheesy Christmas movie right before an angel saves the day? The editors’ advice for starting a lifestyle magazine: Make sure people care about the lifestyle you’re depicting. Seriously, there’s not even reality TV show about Sac-town. MORE ONLINE
