******* Forget Iowa, Look At Kansas The Iowa caucus today makes it officially an election year, and over at Vogue, that means ramped-up political coverage. The fashion title has a long history of covering politicians and the people attached to them, such as Condoleezza Rice and Elizabeth Edwards, but what about Sarah Palin and Kathleen Sebelius? The governors of Alaska and Kansas, respectively, will be featured in Vogue's February issue, shot by Jonathan Becker, with stories written by Rebecca Johnson and John Powers. Palin, a Republican who has been in office for about a year and is rumored as a potential vice presidential candidate, was photographed at her home in Wasilla, Alaska, wearing Ralph Lauren and MaxMara. A Palin spokesman noted that the photographs represent the first pictures of the governor taken without her glasses. Sebelius, a Democrat, wore Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera during a shoot in the governor's office and in the Kansas Senate Chambers. The issue hits newsstands later this month. FAST MOVERS Though it may seem like Portfolio is running out of talent to poach, competitors aren't done luring people away. Fast Company has hired Jana Meier, Portfolio's senior associate art director. "Losing a designer of Jana's calibre is rotten news," wrote design director Robert Priest in a memo to staff. Fast Company, which is staffing up to fill those spiffy new World Trade Center offices, also has hired Mark Borden as senior editor. He was a reporter for Fortune (where he profiled Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy) until 2002, and more recently has been writing for The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker and Sports Illustrated. Anya Kamenetz, author of the acclaimed "Generation Debt," has signed on as a staff writer.

OK!, the celebrity magazine, could not possibly have purchased all the attention it enjoyed in late December after it got the scoop that Jamie Lynn Spears, the younger and until then less sensational sister of the troubled pop queen Britney Spears, was three months pregnant. Or could it? It is widely assumed within the publishing industry that OK! paid the Spears family for the exclusive rights to the pregnancy news. US Weekly, another celebrity magazine, cited sources who said that Jamie Lynn’s mother, Lynne Spears, had sold the pregnancy story for $1 million, printing the assertion on the cover of last week’s issue. Checkbook journalism is hardly a secret within the star-struck world of glossy magazines. The publications often pay for photos of weddings and babies, perhaps most famously in June 2006 when People won a fierce bidding war for the first photos of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter, Shiloh. SPECULATION is swirl ing that Susan Lyne, the CEO and president of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, may be looking to exit the company. The clock started ticking on a one-year automatic renewable option clause as of yesterday, but the original pact that she signed in Nov. 2004 has not been replaced by a new long-term contract, according to the latest SEC filings. That agreement officially expired on Dec. 31, 2007. Last year, she collected $4.4 million in total compensation running MSO, but she could land a bigger payday elsewhere. Lyne's stock wealth also is paltry compared to CEOs at other media firms. Her pot of about $3.5 million in company shares lost 58 percent of their value in the past year. She began unloading stock after the price began skidding, collecting just under $890,000 in the past 12 months, and still owns shares valued at about $1.24 million, according to SEC filings. 4. Fashion Week Daily
Abercrombie & Fitch has plans to reinstate its racy and controversial A&F Quarterly magazine this spring, as early as April, The Daily has learned. For its second go-around, however, the magazine-catalog hybrid will debut and be available exclusively in London, where the American fashion brand opened its first international flagship at 7 Burlington Gardens in London last March in what formerly housed Jil Sander, steps from Savile Row. Sam Shahid, who designed the magazine in its six-year run, is back at the helm as creative director. Shahid, of course, is perhaps best known for his Calvin Klein campaign featuring Brooke Shields and the proclamation, "Nothing comes between me and my Calvins." During that period, the quarterly was edited by Savas Abadsidis with a circulation of one to 1.2 million. It was printed on cougar vellum paper, unique for a catalog. It remains unclear whether any changes save for cosmetic have been made in preparation for its relaunch. A&F Quarterly launched in Fall 1997 and featured college-centric articles and tips as well as photo essays by Bruce Weber depicting extremely fit and attractive models in erotic or homoerotic poses or scenarios wearing clothes with A&F logos displayed prominently. It was pulled from U.S. stores in December 2003 after numerous boycotts from religious organizations and women's rights groups alleging its sexually explicit nature, promotion of alcohol abuse, and other cultural concerns. What happens when a magazine that just got feted as one of 2007's best launches ceases publication? We're about to find out... High-end golf mag Golf Connoisseur and ruralcentric pub The Land Report have ceased publishing. The last issue of GC came out in September, while TLR's was in October... and the mags' failures follow some questionable business decisions, including the purchase of Luxury Golf & Travel and Nicklaus magazines by parent company Patience back in 2006. Publisher Reid Slaughter was formerly involved with D Magazine as well, but has apparently moved on. We've heard that non-payment from advertisers also contributed to the failure of both mags... official confirmation on that is, however, lacking. Also noted is that The Land Report was one of min's top magazine launches of 2007. An email to Slaughter has not been returned as of press time. MORE ONLINE

Graydon Carter will hold his legendary Vanity Fair Oscar party whether or not the writer's strike is resolved by the time of the ceremony. Carter responded to FishbowlNY's question via email: ''We're going ahead as planned. Although we have made provisions for a shorter-than-usual ceremony. Since it's all hypothetical at the moment, it's difficult to comment further.'' Mr. Carter is correct, the strike could end tomorrow. Still, it is not inconceivable that the strike may continue beyond the Oscar ceremonies. Since the WGA denied the Academy waivers for writers, celebrities, in solidarity, might not attend. ''We would hope that performers would decline to appear,'' WGA East President Michael Winship told The New york Sun. ''And if that happens, I can't really imagine what the scenario would be like.'' Nor can we imagine what that would mean for the Vanity Fair Oscar party. MORE ONLINE
