Unpaid Spring Interns: Snag Ed's $1,000 Trust Fund!
*******************
Listen up, up-and-coming Edsters in the city now for spring internships! Ed is back on his giving spree and is handing out his Ed's Trust Fund for the spring semester. If you're an UNPAID intern at a magazine in New York City this spring, then Ed wants to help you out! Read Ed's Trust Fund rules (aka: the "fine print")—and snatch an application—at www.ed2010.com/ed-campus/trust-fund and then apply before JANUARY 30, 2008! (Ed also encourages potential applicants to read the amazing testimonials from past winners on the same web page.) You must have your spring internship secured when you apply. The prize? $1,000 to use however you please. (But Ed hopes the winner'll use it to, well, live in this amazing yet ridiculously expensive city!)

BTW, Ed doesn't endorse the random non-Ed advertisement you see at the top of the newsletter. It's just what happens when you use a free e-newsletter service.

To the Highest Bidder
By Abby Ellin
1/6/08
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/06/education/edlife/auction-intern-sidebar.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Used to be, the way to land an internship at a hoity-toity magazine was through tenacity, talent or family connections. Now, in the name of giving, you can bid your offspring into a spot at a national publication.

Charitybuzz.com, which runs live and online auctions to support various causes, offers the chance to see if the devil wears Prada at Glamour, O, Harper’s Bazaar and other magazines.

“They do it as a way of supporting charities they believe in and giving their kids exposure to industries they’re interested in,” says Coppy Holzman, the chief executive of Charitybuzz.

Memo Pad: Campbell’s Coup (1st item)
By Nina Jones
1/7/08
http://wwd.com/memopad/article/121280

What do you get when you pair Naomi Campbell with Hugo Chavez? One amusing interview. For her debut piece in British GQ, newly minted contributing editor Campbell interviewed the Venezuelan president, and it appears she couldn't shut him up.

In a four-page interview, Chavez blows on about President Bush wanting to kill him, his vision for uniting South America by 2020 and how he thinks the world is seeing "the fall of the Empire [of the Eagle]" — referring to America. The interview will appear in the magazine's February issue, which hits newsstands Thursday.

Somehow Campbell succeeds in keeping the tone of the interview upbeat. In her introduction, she says that, over the course of her three meetings with Chavez, she discovered — go figure — that he loves to sing. "If he wasn't the president, he'd be a very successful Latin singer," she asserts. She also elicits Chavez's views on fashion: He believes Fidel Castro (whom Campbell once met) is the most stylish world leader because "his uniform is impeccable...and his beard is elegant."

Memo Pad: Another Home (5th item)

Louis Bofferding, a decorative arts contributing editor at Domino, soon will begin a new column at competitor Elle Decor. His last two stories for Domino, which have already been written, will appear sometime in 2008, said Deborah Needleman, editor in chief. Bofferding said he's enjoyed writing for Domino for the past two years, but at Elle Decor, he will have a chance to write longer pieces. He added that the new column has yet to be named and he is currently working on his first piece. "He did a great job for us," Needleman told WWD. She added that Bofferding is one of the first people she thought of when the magazine was in development. Bofferding, who has worn many hats, including lecturer and museum curator, also has a shop on the Upper East Side.

Portfolio Takes A Dig At Competition Via PhotoShop
By Gawker editors
1/7/08
http://gawker.com/341570/portfolio-takes-a-dig-at-competition-via-photoshop

Was Portfolio's production team projecting just a smidge when they chose to illustrate a column this month about the city's declining commercial real estate market with a "foreclosure"-stamped photograph of the Time-Life, Simon & Schuster and McGraw-Hill buildings? The buildings house most of Portfolio's big competitors: Time Inc.'s Fortune and Money, as well as McGraw-Hill's BusinessWeek. While we wouldn't put a little petty retaliation past editor Joanne Lippman, a bored (or clueless) photo editor is likely behind this one. Artful art there, kids!

Bhutto is posthumous Parade mag cover
By Karen Matthews, AP Writer
1/6/08
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080107/ap_on_re_us/bhutto_magazine_cover_1

An interview with Benazir Bhutto before the former Pakistani prime minister was assassinated was important enough to keep on the cover of Parade magazine, the magazine's publisher said Sunday — even though the publication had already gone to print when Bhutto was killed.

Randy Siegel said Parade went to press on Dec. 21 and was already on its way to the 400 newspapers that distribute it when Bhutto was killed in a Dec. 27 shooting and bombing attack at a campaign rally in her country.

The Web version of the story was updated, Siegel said, but it was too late to change the magazine. He said the only option other than running the outdated article would have been asking newspapers not to distribute the magazine at all.

Print is dead: long live print
By Jonathan Weber
1/7/08
http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/the_web/article3145719.ece

We all know by now that the future of media is online, and I'd be the last person to deny the significance of the changes wrought by the Internet. But I think one of the most interesting things to emerge in the media business this year will be a comeback of sorts for print.

Print, of course, hasn't exactly gone away – magazines and newspapers still account for more then a third of worldwide ad revenues – but the chatter in the industry suggests its death is just around the corner.

In the U.S. especially, the newspaper business appears to be in a free-fall, with many big papers reporting year-over-year revenue and circulation declines of ten per cent or more - shocking numbers indeed for century-old businesses. The big magazine companies, and especially kingpin Time Inc., are under ever-growing financial pressure; nobody would be surprised if the new CEO of Time Warner sold the magazine unit.

Round-Trip Fare
By Business Editors
1/7/08
http://www.nypost.com/seven/01072008/business/round_trip_fare_214389.htm

January is a time when thoughts turn to exotic locales: whether it's your next fork in the road, tour on a cruise ship, or ride on a camel.

National Geographic Traveler is for travelers, not tourists. The difference is that travelers move at their own pace, while tourists just pass through a place. This issue suggests that more people abandon the guidebooks and structured itineraries in order to savor the experience. That sounds like good advice to us, especially if you're heading to a place as foreign and exciting as China. With the aid of stunning photography, the magazine gives readers an inside look at the rising nation ahead of the much-anticipated Beijing Olympics, with eye-catching pictures ranging from the rice terraces to the "Water Cube" at the Olympic site.

Budget Travel is perfect for our limited bank accounts and it doesn't waste time with down-and-out vacations like winters in Alaska and resorts in Arkansas. This month's issue highlights the 40 best deals around the globe from particular cities in the US. The mag also features trips to Paris, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires and an interesting jaunt down the east coast of Florida starting in Jacksonville. The only problem we have with the mag is its lack of detail for some of the vacations it describes.

Two friendly, mid-20s media types are looking for a third roommate to live in an unfurnished bedroom in a 3BR Hell's Kitchen apartment. You would be taking over a lease, starting February 3 and ending August 31, 2008. The apartment has a very large kitchen, a nice-sized living room and bathroom, and it is on the third floor of a walk-up pre-war building with exposed brick. The bedroom for rent is about 9x7. The apartment is located in Hell's Kitchen, within a few blocks of multiple subway lines, and near Times Square, Central Park, Columbus Circle, and a million bars and restaurants. We (a male and female—not a couple!) are relatively social and sometimes go out during the week, more so when it's not 15 degrees outside. We are looking for a professional around our age (no students unless in grad school, please!) who is very clean and maintains a similar lifestyle to ours. No smokers, drug users, or pet owners. Rent is $1,067/month per person. You will need to pay first month's rent, security deposit, and lease-transfer fee ($1,067 x 2 + $300 = $2,434) upon signing the lease. Cable and wireless Internet is $44/month per person; utilities run about $50/month per person. You will also be required to either be the guarantor for your share of the apartment or (if you don't make three times the annual rent, which would be roughly $36,000) have a parent or guardian who will sign for you. All that is required for this is a copy of your/your guarantor's tax return. If this place sounds like your future apartment, e-mail us a bit about yourself hellskitchenapartment@gmail.com. We won't respond if you don't give us some background info. If you seem like a good fit, we will arrange to meet.
