High-Level Shake-Up at Cond? Nast
By RICHARD P?REZ-PE?A
January 8, 2008
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/08/business/media/08mag.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Cond? Nast Publications announced a management shake-up on Monday, including the departure of Mitchell B. Fox, one of the company’s highest-ranking executives and a former publisher of Details and Vanity Fair.

Executives at Cond? Nast, a unit of Advance Publications, said the moves were aimed at strengthening marketing and advertising, especially across multiple magazines, and giving more power to people seen as having strengths in those areas.

The moves, made by Charles H. Townsend, president and chief executive of Cond? Nast, group together magazines with overlapping audiences or themes. They also streamline the upper ranks of Cond? Nast, one of the world’s biggest magazine publishers.

Ever-so-slightly ahead of an imminent major reorganization announcement (UPDATE 5:45 PM: announcement pasted after the jump), I am hearing that Conde Nast Group President Mitch Fox is leaving the company—something Fox himself shared with some key colleagues via email.

Fox, a former publisher of Details who also served as CEO of the company’s Golf Digest Group, most recently held the title Group President and Publishing Director.

Also leaving the company: Sandy Golinkin, who had been Publisher of pioneering shopping title Lucky since its launch, and Amy Churgin, a former Publisher of Gourmet and Architectural Digest who was most recently SVP of the publisher’s group sales arm, the Conde Nast Media Group. Lou Cona will step down as Publisher of the New Yorker. Drew Schutte, formerly the Publisher of Wired, will become Publisher of the New Yorker.

Harper’s Bazaar Editor Named 'Order of the British Empire Officer'
By Joanna Pettas
January 7, 2008
http://www.foliomag.com/2008/harper-s-bazaar-editor-named-order-british-empire-officer

British-born Harper's Bazaar editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey has been named to the Officer class of the Order of the British Empire, an honor that Queen Elizabeth II or Prince Charles will personally deliver to recognize her services to British journalism and British fashion in the United States. She is one of 18 other honored officers of the Order of the British Empire announced with the Queen's 2008 New Year Honours list.

Since Bailey was named editor-in-chief of Bazaar in May 2001, newsstand sales have increased by 38 percent and the magazine has received a number of awards, including a 2007 Lucie Award for Fashion Layout of the Year and one from ASME for Best Fashion Cover in 2007.

Before joining Bazaar, Bailey was editor-in-chief of the U.S. Marie Claire for five years, during which Adweek named her editor of the year in March 2001 for her "innovative, expansive and democratic approach" to editing a fashion and beauty magazine.

Gilbert Harrison, 92, Ex-Editor, Dies
By Dennis Hevesi
January 8, 2008
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/08/obituaries/08harrison.html

Gilbert A. Harrison, a former publisher of The New Republic, the political and cultural opinion journal that for nearly a century has adhered for the most part to a liberal bent, died Thursday in Phoenix. He was 92 and lived in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The cause was heart failure, said his son, James.

Mr. Harrison was the owner and editor of The New Republic, an influential though rarely profitable publication, from 1953 to 1974. Under him, the magazine was a strong voice on behalf of the civil rights movement. After initially supporting the war in Vietnam, it became a forceful opponent of it, repeatedly criticizing Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon.

Trump Returns With New Magazine
By Lucia Moses
January 7, 2008
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003692096

Donald Trump, who once fired shots at Rosie O’Donnell over her failed magazine, is no stranger to the perils of publishing. Premiere Publishing Group, his last partner in his eponymous luxury title, reported a loss of $357,626 for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2007, per an SEC filing.

Trump magazine, published via a new pact with luxury regional publisher Niche Media, seems off to a strong start. The debut January issue carried 144 ad pages (including Gucci & Cartier), and the second has another 290 booked.

Trump is featured prominently in the first issue, but the real estate tycoon insisted his magazine aspirations are limited. “It wasn’t that I wanted to be in the magazine business; I wanted to have a great magazine for my hotels and condos,” he told Mediaweek. “To me, it’s a great service to provide them.”

Wisdom and Wiseacres in Esquire

Facts, facts, facts! We're drowning in a sea of facts and every day a flood of new facts pours in. What America needs is fewer facts and more wisdom. Fortunately, the January issue of Esquire is chock-full of wisdom. In fact, it's jampacked with the wisest wisdom from some of the wisest human beings of our time, such as Jerry Lewis, Rodney Dangerfield and Donald Trump.

"Everybody is nine years old," said Lewis. "People seldom live up to their baby pictures," said Dangerfeld. "Fighting for the last penny is a very good philosophy to have," said Trump.

The occasion for this outpouring of wisdom is the 10th anniversary of the popular Esquire feature called "What I've Learned." Like so many good things, this feature began by accident. In 1998, Esquire sent writer Mike Sager to interview actor Rod Steiger and Steiger showed up carrying notes about what he'd learned in life.
