1. MediaWeek
Insiders at Cond? Nast Publications are awaiting a second round of changes after last week’s wide-ranging executive shakeup. It has been acknowledged that Teen Vogue will get a new publisher, now that Gina Sanders will be assuming publishing duties for Lucky. Some speculate that new publishers also could be named for titles Glamour and Cond? Nast Portfolio, now that their current publishers have taken on new responsibilities. Bill Wackermann, vp, publisher, Glamour, was given oversight of CN’s bridal titles. And David Carey took on responsibility for Wired Media and The Golf Digest Group, in addition to his current role as Portfolio publisher and group president and publishing director, CN Business Media. Observers say Carey will also likely hire a separate publisher for Wired.com, now that Wired Media publishing director Drew Schutte has shifted over to The New Yorker, succeeding vp, publisher Lou Cona, who moved over to corporate sales. Some also wonder if Wired.com, now part of CN digital arm Cond?Net, will move closer to the operating model of Portfolio.com, which is run by its magazine counterpart Portfolio. MORE ONLINE
2. MediaWeek
A year ago, Vibe was spinning off standalone supplements, planning events and working on a TV show. These days, the monthly title is taking a “less is more” approach and has folded its supplements into in-book sections, tabled its broadcast plans and scaled back its events to a handful of truly tent-pole gatherings. Vibe Media Group CEO Steve Aaron is also considering raising or cutting the 850,000 rate base by 50,000 as early as the second half of 2008 and combining the December/January issue. MORE ONLINE
3. AdAge
For a few hours last Monday morning, Cond? Nast seemed like the rumpus room of yore: Ad Age and BusinessWeek were told of executives losing their jobs before the company could announce the news; magazines were reassigned en masse; and, despite longstanding rumors anticipating some of the moves, almost everyone was caught off-guard. Cond? was once again the talk of Michael's. But the changes actually signify the end of the rumpus-room days. The executives ousted might have found favor under former chiefs, such as the recently deceased Steve Florio, but the current regime could see no place for them. A person within the company also said the changes reflect a company that's become a magazine giant -- with Time Inc.'s sale of 18 titles in February 2007, Cond? Nast became the country's largest seller of ad pages -- and is adapting to its growth. Back in 2003, Mitch Fox was considered a contender for the CEO spot. Mary Berner, CEO of Cond? sibling Fairchild Publications, looked like a lock to advance as well. But last Monday's moves by President-CEO Charles H. Townsend saw Mr. Fox depart. Ms. Berner, whose company was absorbed into Cond? in 2005, was already long gone. Still standing: David Carey. MORE ONLINE
4. WWD
What's on David Remnick's mind these days? In a video interview with Big Think, a Web start-up that marries high-profile interviews with social networking, The New Yorker editor in chief reflects on his childhood, his big breaks at The Washington Post and in Russia, and discusses the future of The New Yorker and of journalism in general. But he also admits he worries about whether The New Yorker is funny enough. He recalls a lunch with 87-year-old New Yorker legend Roger Angell: "I said, 'You know, Roger, I've been doing this for a couple of years, and it's easier for me to get somebody to go sleep on the ground in Sudan and dodge bullets in Afghanistan than it is to get something authentically funny.' And he nodded and he said, 'Well, that's very interesting, because you are now the fifth editor of The New Yorker to tell me this, beginning with Harold Ross.'" Remnick also spoke at length about the survival of newspapers. "I think newspapers are going to be with us in one form or another. They may just be completely on a screen. And if they're not, I'm conservative enough to think that's a gigantic tragedy....And all that said, I couldn't care less if it's no longer on paper. I mean, I have an atavistic affection for that, but even I at 49 see this as semiludicrous." MORE ONLINE

Nearly five years after he was forced to resign as the top editor of the New York Times, Howell Raines is taking on a new role: media critic. He will write a monthly column for Portfolio, the new Conde Nast magazine. And his perspective is that of a battle-scarred veteran: "I've got more arrows in me than Custer's horse," he says. From his home in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, Raines, 64, sounds a bit mellowed: "It's been refreshing and a bit daunting to try to think about writing something that hasn't been said 30 times. I don't have any thunderbolts to throw at my former profession." He plans to focus on campaign coverage. MORE ONLINE
6. Jossip
At long last, Ken Baker is leaving Us Weekly. In what can’t exactly be described as a surprise, he’s ending his eight-year tenure at the Wenner tabloid, which in recent years included endless gossip about ethical lapses and payola, demotions, Ryan Seacrest loving (and favoring), scandal, and yes, his departure. In an email to colleagues, Ken writes, “I just wanted to let you all know that I was recently asked to relocate to NYC and continue my editorial director work for Us Online. As a family, however, we decided that now wasn’t a good time for a move. So, after nearly 8 amazing years on staff at Us Weekly, I am moving on to some new and exciting opportunities.” Ken, of course, has been running UsMagazine.com since being “transitioned” away from his West Coast Editor role. So where is he off to? His email doesn’t say, and usually-knowledgeable sources close to him say they aren’t sure, either. In any event, you’re probably about nine seconds away from no longer caring, so here’s his email, after the jump. MORE ONLINE

She’s young, beautiful, and unemployed. That’s right, Lauren Conrad has reportedly been dumped from her internship with Teen Vogue, along with Hills pal Whitney Port. And according to an insider, the constant partying and lifestyle choices portrayed on LC’s show “The Hills” may have had something to do with the decision handed down from Teen Vogue execs. "The average age of the magazine’s readership is 16 — do they really want to support the behavior depicted in “The Hills?” They also started to see that newsstand sales were flat… there was no blip on the radar when Lauren and Whitney were involved.” MORE ONLINE
8. The Independent
The Yorkshire-bred editor of American Marie Claire is grit and determination wrapped up in Dolce & Gabbana and soled in Christian Louboutin. And if the white-hot centre of the New York media business is looking to crown a new Tina Brown, then Joanna Coles is definitely the name to watch. She follows a long line of British editorial talent that has taken up residence in New York, including Anna Wintour at US Vogue, Marie Claire predecessor Glenda Bailey at Harper's Bazaar and OK! magazine's Sarah Ivens, to name a few. Coles, 45, is not above a challenge. She once secured an exclusive talk with O.J. Simpson, who shattered a glass at their table in response to her tough questioning. On the same day as this interview with The Independent, she will debate the merits of plastic surgery with the wry Los Angeles-based comedienne Joan Rivers, live on NBC. While other editors seem happy to remain behind their desks, Coles is aggressively making a name for herself. She's frequently mentioned in the New York Post's gossip column Page Six (once for tongue lashing a security guard at the Gucci show in Milan who'd kept a group of editors out.) She's also co-operating on a TV version of the movie The Devil Wears Prada. MORE ONLINE
