FROM MAGS TO BOOKS

How challenging is it to follow in the footsteps of legendary book editor and author Michael Korda, who's worked with everyone from Jacqueline Susann to William Shirer? Former Time editor Priscilla Painton is about to find out. Painton, who spent nearly 20 years at Time and rose to deputy managing editor before departing in December, will become editor in chief of the Simon & Schuster imprint, replacing Korda, who relinquished that title at the end of 2005 and is now editor in chief emeritus. Painton was the highest-ranking woman in Time's history, whom many believed could have replaced Jim Kelly when he stepped down as the magazine's managing editor in 2006 (the job went to Richard Stengel). When she revealed she would leave Time in October, she said at the time she wanted to figure out "act two" of her career. "I had been thinking about being 49 and needing to launch a second career," Painton told WWD on Wednesday. David Rosenthal, executive vice president and publisher of the Simon & Schuster imprint, said Painton's "high-level experience, her sense of story and authorial contacts" made her an ideal fit for the job. Painton will take her new position on March 3.

A TIMELY CONTINGENT

Looks like those New Orleans-themed packages in 10 Time Inc. magazines didn't go unnoticed. The Preservation Resource Center, which works toward the revitalization of New Orleans' historic neighborhoods, is recognizing Time Warner with the first-ever New Orleans Citizenship Award. A cocktail party at Jazz at Lincoln Center tonight will feature Mayor Michael Bloomberg as well as top executives from Time Inc., CNN and HBO. That includes Time Inc. editor in chief John Huey, who took 12 of his managing editors to New Orleans last year, a trip that resulted in numerous magazine packages on the city in time for the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Expected media presence, though, will exceed Time Warner's stable. The New Yorker's Paul Goldberger and Calvin Trillin are on board, as well as Columbia School of Journalism dean Nick Lemann, who is a New Orleans native and whose son (with former House & Garden editor in chief Dominique Browning) works at the Preservation Resource Center. Harry Shearer, the voice of Homer on "The Simpsons" and a Huffington Post blogger, will emcee.

Final 2007 Report: Magazine Ad Revenues Grow, Ad Pages Dip
By Dylan Stableford

Total magazine rate-card-reported advertising revenue for consumer magazines grew 6.1 percent in 2007 when compared to 2006, according to year-end Publishers Information Bureau figures released this morning. But total ad pages—considered the more telling statistic, given the unaccounted rate card discounts doled out by publishers—declined about a half a percent (-0.6) over the same period.

Nine of the 12 major advertising categories—comprising more than 85 percent of the $25.5 billion of total magazine ad spending—showed increases. Eight categories bought more ad pages in 2007 than in 2006. Drug companies spent the most on advertising in magazines, according to PIB.

“In the face of a weakened economy, lowered consumer confidence and tighter ad budgets, magazine spending held steady in 2007, and even posted a stronger finish in the fourth quarter,” Magazine Publishers of America executive vice president and chief marketing officer Ellen Oppenheim said in a statement accompanying the PIB release.

‘Portfolio’ Still Looking Elsewhere for Inspiration
By Chris Rovzar and Jessica Pressler

Have you noticed that all of the news about the Great Cond? Nast Reshuffling of 2008 has emerged from Women's Wear Daily? It's becoming the mouthpiece of the company's HR department. (Or maybe the news is all a little too boring for anyone else to care about.) After a week of updates about shifts and firings on the business side at Cond? titles Vogue, Golf Digest, Lucky, Teen Vogue, and The New Yorker, WWD today tells us about Portfolio (this month's cover pictured here). Apparently the business mag's editor, Joanne Lipman, tapped recently departed Post metro editor, Dan Colarusso, to run its growing Website. Also, to fill new Portfolio publisher William Li's absence at Men's Vogue, Cond? looked within its walls to Details associate publisher, Marc Berger. We'd walk you through all of the changes that came last week, but the most telling detail is already above: While the rest of Cond? Nast continues to recruit talent only from inside the company, Portfolio continues to look outside for fresh ideas!

The Land Report, Golf Connoisseur Cease Publication... Without Paying The Freelancers?

What happens when a magazine that just got feted as one of 2007's best launches ceases publication? We're about to find out...

High-end golf mag Golf Connoisseur and ruralcentric pub The Land Report have ceased publishing. The last issue of GC came out in September, while TLR's was in October... and the mags' failures follow some questionable business decisions, including the purchase of Luxury Golf & Travel and Nicklaus magazines by parent company Patience back in 2006. Publisher Reid Slaughter was formerly involved with D Magazine as well, but has apparently moved on. We've heard that non-payment from advertisers also contributed to the failure of both mags... official confirmation on that is, however, lacking.

Also noted is that The Land Report was one of min's top magazine launches of 2007. An email to Slaughter has not been returned as of press time.

Magazine Ad Pages Flat in Q4 '07
By Lucia Moses

Magazine ad pages were flat for the fourth quarter and all of 2007, with pharmaceutical advertising gains providing some relief to an industry ailing from auto, technology and shelter-related ad declines, according to data released Jan. 16.

In the fourth quarter, ad pages were flat at 71,763 while rate-card reported ad revenue rose 7 percent to $7.6 billion, per Publishers Information Bureau figures. For full-year 2007, magazine ad pages dipped 0.6 percent to 244,737, with rate-card reported ad revenue up 6.1 percent to $25.5 billion, per PIB.

Drugs & Remedies was the top category in terms of ad revenue for the second year in a row, gaining 7.1 percent to $2.6 billion in 2007. Reflecting the car industry’s woes that have led to cutbacks in spending across media, the automotive category sank to fifth place in terms of revenue in 2007, the first time it hasn’t cracked the top three in the past five years, according to Magazine Publishers of America’s analysis.

We always look to hire former interns for freelance and full-time positions, so this is a great way to showcase your skills. Please email all resumes and questions Brian Kantor at bkantor@blackbookmag.com. (OK to mention Ed)
