******* After months of speculation by wholesalers and publishers, Wal-Mart is moving ahead with cutting close to 1,000 magazines from its shelves, and it appears the company’s recent commitment to being "green" is a factor. Representatives from the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company did not respond to calls and e-mails seeking comment. But according to industry sources with knowledge of Wal-Mart’s plans, the company’s Sustainability Committee—and its commitment to reducing waste—played a key role in its decision. According to one Sustainability Committee member, the formula Wal-Mart used to determine the cut list was based on a ranking of magazine titles by sales. Any title that was not in the top half of sales in any Wal-Mart store was cut from the list. MORE ONLINE

Gossip mag publisher American Media found itself roiled again yesterday following the sudden ouster of Chief Financial Officer John Craven. Craven will be replaced by Dean Durbin, former CEO and CFO of Vertis, a company that, like AMI, has a sizable financial stake controlled by private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners. Durbin is AMI's sixth CFO in less than four years. Craven will stay on as a consultant. MORE ONLINE

"I just got finished with New York magazine's new issue. After I put it down, I leafed back through all of the insightful, well-thought-out stories, beautiful glossy photographs, useful charts, and I thought to myself, 'Wow. F -- k blogs.'" -- Ricky Van Veen at rickyvanveen.com When I read that recent, random observation on the personal blog of Ricky Van Veen, I thought, Hells yeah. It's worth noting that Van Veen is no grizzled, old-media hack swathed in gauzy nostalgia; he's the 27-year-old editor in chief of CollegeHumor. The blog backlash has been a long time coming (actually, I guess, it's been ongoing and concurrent with the blog boom, but lately everyone I know seems down on blogs). And, arguably, a moment of glossy resurgence has arrived -- well, OK, if not a resurgence, at least a glimmer of hopefulness. Like Van Veen, I've been feeling deeply appreciative -- and even a little optimistic -- about magazines. To wit: … MORE ONLINE

CAMPBELL'S NEXT SHOT: Naomi Campbell seems to have made it her mission to get the scoop on South America's political elite. Her interview with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez — Campbell's first as British GQ's newest contributing editor — appeared in the magazine earlier this month, and the model has her sights set just as high for her future interview subjects. STEPPING OUT: Sigerson Morrison is rolling out its first ad campaign in February fashion magazines, thanks to a cash infusion from Marc Fisher LLC, a Greenwich, Conn.-based footwear firm that purchased a majority stake more than a year ago. A spokeswoman noted the media buy will "start small," adding that the company plans to allocate $500,000 a season. The first images, which were shot by Fabien Baron and styled by Karl Templer, will be seen in Vogue, and internationally in Paris Vogue, Italian Vogue, Japanese Vogue, Another and i-D. Baron also worked on creating a new brand identity for the company. "The moment we decided to grow in this direction, we thought of Fabien," said Kari Sigerson and Miranda Morrison. "We knew he and his talented team would help us find the visual language to explain to the indoctrinated who we are and what we are about. We also knew that he would give us the most amazing images that would be perfect for us." Baron also encouraged the brand to feature German model Hartje Andresen in the ads. "He really pushed for her, so we said yes. I mean, how do you say no to Fabien?” WEDDINGS MADE SIMPLE: Real Simple is thought to be an authority on cleaning and organization, but this month, the Time Inc. title will publish "Real Simple Weddings," a planning guide to all aspects of the big day. The guide will be sold at Crate and Barrel stores for $12.95 until Jan. 28, and then at any bookstore that carries bridal magazines. Crate and Barrel is the sole advertiser in the issue and created new print ads exclusive to the weddings title. Realsimple.com recently enhanced its site to include weddings content from the book, which lives under a new celebrations section on the site. With all the weddings magazines and how-to guides already in bookstores, why did Real Simple, which has never published weddings content, publish its own bridal guide? "We're all about making life easier, so we've covered home, food, fashion," said publisher Steve Sachs. "We know the wedding planning process is stressful, and while there are many wedding planning products, none of them tackle it from the position of making life easier." Sachs explained that weddings were the second most popular search topic on Real Simple's Web site, though, prior to last week, it produced no information on the topic. Even competitors acknowledged Real Simple's organizational approach was a good start for brides-to-be. "Part of wedding planning is about organization, but it goes much further than that. Style and design, personalizing your wedding and etiquette are all important details," said Theresa DiMasi, editor of Brides.com. MORE ONLINE

Despite the drubbing the business magazine category has been taking in the advertising market, does it still have room for growth? Mansueto Ventures—Inc. and Fast Company parent company—seems to think so. It is working on a new magazine, aptly titled Upstart, aimed at entrepreneurs, sources there confirmed. Publisher of the new title is Adam Platzner, who has held sales positions at music Web site SpiralFrog.com and the defunct Cargo, published by Cond? Nast. Heading up the editorial side is Scott Medintz, product development editor, who was formerly a senior editor at Time Inc.’s Money. Once scheduled for a May newsstand debut, the title’s launch date is undetermined. Mansueto, which bought Inc. and Fast Company in 2005 from G+J USA, has also been spending money to build up its digital offerings. It announced plans for FastCompany.tv, an online video network, to go live in March. Technology blogger Robert Scoble was named managing director of the site, which will cover technology trends, interviews with executives and product reviews. MORE ONLINE
